David Clarkson remains out indefinitely with a chronic lower-back problem.

Clarkson failed the Blue Jackets' physical. "He will be trying to work his way back through rehab, but he has had a rough summer," Jackets president John Davidson said. "He has tried to train all (summer), and he has had real issues with it." At this point it's possible that Clarkson may have played in his last game. Clarkson's contract is insured, which is particularly noteworthy because Nathan Horton's deal was not, creating problems for the Jackets when he sustained a career-ending injury. The Jackets dealt Horton to Toronto in exchange for Clarkson in a deal that essentially bought Toronto cap space and meant that Columbus was at least getting an active player for the money they were already spending. Unfortunately the Blue Jackets have only gotten 26 games out of Clarkson, but at least if he's on the LTIR they're spared of the cash they'd have to pay Clarkson and not just the cap hit, so this is still better than the Horton situation for them.

David Clarkson has failed his physical, so he won't be with Columbus at the start of training camp.

He has dealt with plenty of injuries and was limited to 23 games last year. Clarkson was suffering from a back injury at the end of the 2015-16 season.

David Clarkson is dealing with back issues.

Clarkson was limited to 23 games this season due to a variety of problems. He now has the summer to recover, but injuries have been a recurring theme for him in recent years, so it wouldn't be surprising if he spends some time on the sidelines in 2016-17.

David Clarkson is injured again, according to Coach John Tortorella.

Mar 12 - 1:13 PM

David Clarkson, Jared Boll and Cody Goloubef will each be scratched from Thursay's match with the Devils.

Unfortunate for Clarkson who made a name for himself in New Jersey over seven seasons before his fiasco in Toronto. In 18 games this season for Columbus, Clarkson has posted two points with 13 PIMs and 36 hits. Which at least makes him a top line forward in reverse leagues.

David Clarkson (upper body) has gotten some time on the ice with assistant coach Kenny McCudden over the last few days.

There's still no timetable for Clarkson's return though. This is a positive step, but we would be surprised if Clarkson ended up playing for Columbus in the near future.
Feb 16 - 9:24 AM

It would be surprising if David Clarkson (upper body) returns in the not too distant future.

That's based on the fact that updates regarding Clarkson's recovery have been scarce since he was hurt on Jan. 2. Clarkson has been limited to 18 contests in 2015-16.
Feb 3 - 3:33 PM

David Clarkson has largely been a bust for Columbus.

The Blue Jackets couldn't have had high expectations for Clarkson when they acquired him from Toronto in Feb. 2015 because the reality is that they were just looking to get rid of Nathan Horton's contract. At that point it seemed probable that Horton would never play again and while putting him on the long-term injured reserve list removed his cap hit, the contract itself wasn't insured, so Columbus would still be writing checks for him. Even still, Clarkson hasn't been much better than Horton, who as expected hasn't played for Toronto. Since the trade, Clarkson has participated in just 21 games and has provided Columbus with two points and a minus-eight rating. On top of all that, Clarkson's no-movement clause means that he has to consume a roster spot when healthy as he can't be put on waivers. It was a unique set of circumstances that allowed the Leafs to unload Clarkson's seven-year, $36.75 million deal. It seems unlikely Columbus will be able to do the same.
