With the game tied at one in the third period, van Riemsdyk gave the Leafs the lead with just over 10 minutes remaining. James van Riemsdyk had a two-point night in the Maple Leafs’ 5-3 loss to the Canadiens on Saturday night.

He scored and assisted. JVR was a plus-two with five shots on goal and six hits in 20:28. The 26-year-old has three goals and four points in seven games. There’s no reason to think he can’t score 25 and get close to 60 points this season. Leo Komarov also had a goal and a helper, while Morgan Rielly cashed in on the other goal.

Coach Mike Babcock wants James van Riemsdyk to be a "dominant player around the cycle."

"I think he can do that, I think he's working hard at that, he's been really open and receptive to feedback," said the Toronto bench boss. "I think he can be a real important player for us. As long as a guy wants to get better, you won't have much trouble helping him. That's important." He is expected to use his big body around the net when the Leafs are on the attack and be active in the defensize zone as well. Van Riemsdyk has one goal and 10 shots in three games to open the year.
Oct 14 - 9:18 AM

James van Riemsdyk recorded the Toronto Maple Leafs' only goal in a 3-1, season-opening loss to the visiting Montreal Canadiens Wednesday night.

The veteran left winger got the puck past Montreal goalie Carey Price when he deflected a shot on a Toronto power play 19 seconds into the second period. The goal tied the game at 1-1. Nazem Kadri and Dion Phaneuf assisted on the goal by van Riemsdyk, who played well last season on a sub-par team, posting 27 goals and 56 points in 82 games. New Toronto coach Mike Babcock, incidentally, won the NHL's first coach's challenge. An apparent goal by Montreal defenseman Jeff Petry at 6:36 of the second period was discounted after video replay showed Tomas Plekanec's stick made contact with the head of Toronto goalie Jonathan Bernier's before the puck entered the net.
Oct 7 - 10:19 PM

James van Riemsdyk scored a goal in Toronto's 4-2 loss to the Detroit Red Wings.

JVR opened the scoring at the 1:09 mark of the first period, but the Red Wings answered with two goals of their own before the end of the frame. Leafs forward Mark Arcobello tied the game in the second period before the Red Wings got goals from Henrik Zetterberg and Brad Richards in the third period. Van Riemsdyk posted a respectable 27 goals and 56 points in 82 games in 2014-15, but the Leafs will need even more from him now that Phil Kessel is no longer in the picture.
Oct 2 - 11:03 PM

James van Riemsdyk is looking forward to be the go-to guy in Toronto this season.

"That's what you want as a player, the pressure to perform and be one of the go-to guys," van Riemsdyk said. "When the team needs a big play you want to be the guy they look to. It's an exciting situation." With Phil Kessel being shipped out of town this off-season, a lot of the offensive burden will fall on van Riemsdyk. The 26-year-old had 27 goals and 56 points in 82 games with the Leafs in 2014-15. It wouldn't be surprising to see him surpass those numbers this year.
Sep 18 - 7:42 PM

James van Riemsdyk is a big supporter of several changes that Toronto has made this off-season.

"You see what they're doing obviously on the outside with hiring different people in management and coaches, but the stuff behind the scenes, the things they're doing to track performance and health, is all very encouraging," he said. "They're making the commitment and that starts up top with ownership. They're making a commitment to different things to really make sure that there is no excuse if you put the work in." He's excited to get to know GM Lou Lamoriello, who he met for the first time when he was 15 years old. Van Riemsdyk is also looking forward to playing for new coach Mike Babcock and getting tips from Dr. Jeremy Bettle, who was hired as the director of sports science and performance. Obviously, he wasn't as enthused to see friend and linemate Phil Kessel get traded, but he knows that is part of the business.
Aug 3 - 8:05 PM

The Blackhawks have added a fan during their run to the Stanley Cup, Leafs forward James van Riemsdyk.

Trevor, JVR’s brother, recently made his playoff debut. James is also rooting on Kimmo Timonen, whom he considers a "good friend." Trevor has played 15:37 in two games, while recording a shot on goal. "With my brother in there, it’s weird," James said. "I kind of feel where my mom comes from where as far as you’re on the edge of your seat. It’s definitely more nerve-wracking than playing. That’s for sure. Just kind of seeing him out there, wanting to do well, it’s definitely a totally different animal than playing in that way."
Jun 13 - 2:40 PM

James van Riemsdyk scored a goal in Toronto's 3-2 shootout win over Ottawa.

The win doesn't mean much to the Leafs but the extra point in the standings would have been huge for Ottawa. The Leafs have now won three of their last five games. Van Riemsdyk now has 27 goals and 55 points in 80 games. The 25-year-old leads Toronto in goals and he trails only Phil Kessel for the team's scoring lead. Peter Holland and Eric Brewer picked up the assists on JVR's goal.

Apr 4 - 10:04 PM

James van Riemsdyk scored a goal in Toronto’s 4-1 loss to the Edmonton Oilers on Monday night.

Van Riemsdyk’s goal at the 13:27 mark of the first period got the Leafs on the board, but they were already down four goals at that point. The goal was scored on the power play. Dion Phaneuf and Phil Kessel registered the assists on the goal. Van Riemsdyk got off to a promising start this season but he has cooled off considerably. The 25-year-old still has a respectable 24 goals and 49 points in 71 games this season.

Mar 11 - 3:39 PM

Toronto forward James van Riemsdyk had a goal and an assist in the Maple Leafs' 4-3 overtime loss to the visiting New York Islanders Monday night.

After scoring his 23rd goal of the season at 6:06 of the third period, van Riemsdyk gave the troubled Leafs a 3-1 lead and some hope that they would prevail. But the Leafs squandered the lead by allowing two regulation goals and then an overtime goal by the Isles' superstar, John Tavares. JVR notched his 25th assist of the season at 10:27 of the second period on Peter Holland's 11th goal of the season. That gave the Leafs a 2-0 lead. David Booth opened the scoring with his fourth goal of the season.
Mar 9 - 11:01 PM

James van Riemsdyk scored the game-winning goal for the Maple Leafs in their 4-3 overtime victory over the Jets on Saturday night.

JVR scored with 1:13 left in the game. The goal is his first in 11 games, and just his third point during that timeframe. That he has 22 goals and 45 points this season is pretty amazing considering the Leafs have struggled mightily since a hot start to the season. Nazem Kadri and Daniel Winnik each picked up a goal and an assist. Leo Komarov got a shorthanded goal. Morgan Rielly assisted twice and finished with a plus-three rating.
