James van Riemsdyk scored a goal and two assists in Wednesday's 7-2 win over the Winnipeg Jets.

JVR couldn't have asked for a better way to kick off a contract year. Van Riemsdyk picked up the primary assist on Nazem Kadri's first-period goal before adding one of his own to make it 2-0 in the opening frame. He then helped set up Mitch Marner's goal in the third period. Van Riemsdyk scored 29 goals and 62 points in 82 games last season, and there's a good chance that he'll be able to replicate similar numbers this season.

The trio was together for most of the 2016-17 campaign and they have been skating alongside each other at training camp. They were impressive in Saturday's preseason win over Buffalo, but JVR feels they are still getting their timing back. "Our chemistry, our ability to read off each other, gets better and better the more we play with each other," he said.

James van Riemsdyk scored twice in Toronto's 3-2 loss to Columbus on Sunday night, pushing the Leafs down to the second wild card spot and into a matchup with Washington.

JVR is sizzling as the regular season comes to an end, having reached the scoresheet in six of his last seven games. The 27-year-old finishes the season with a career high 62 points in 82 games. The Leafs, however, couldn't hold onto the 2-0 lead JVR provided for them, and dropped from third place into the East's final playoff spot.

Forward James van Riemsdyk picked up two assists in the Toronto Maple Leafs' 4-2 victory over the visiting Boston Bruins Monday night.

JVR drew his 31st and 32nd assists of the season on goals by Morgan Rielly (sixth) and Tyler Bozak (17th). Reilly's goal tied the game at 1-1 in the first period and Bozak's power-play goal gave the Leafs a 2-1 lead at 18:03 of the third. The Leafs then scored two long empty-net goals, one by William Nylander and the other by Nazem Kadri. It was Nylander's 19th goal of the season and extended his personal points streak to eight consecutive games. Kadri's goal was his 29th.

"You want to be contributing, you want to be scoring," van Riemsdyk said. "But I’m focusing on the little details, making sure those are in shape and then maybe the puck starts going in again." JVR began his career in Philadelphia posted 47 goals and 99 points in 196 games in the City of Brotherly Love. He's fared much better hockey's proverbial capital, posting 108 goals and 221 points in 303 games. His time in Toronto may be numbered, but there's little doubt that second overall pick in 2007 has been a tremendous success.
