James van Riemsdyk scored a goal and an assist in Friday's 5-4 win over the Carolina Hurricanes.

Nov 20 - 10:31 PM

Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun is speculating that Josh Leivo's extension could mean the end of James Van Riemsdyk in Toronto.

van Riemsdyk's contract is coming to an end at the conclusion of the season and Simmons speculates that Leivo's cheap deal ($925,000 during the 2018-19 season), will allow the Maple Leafs to allocate more money to getting Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner and co. under contract long-term. Leivo is a lesser player but van Riemsdyk's role has diminished for the Leafs recently, evident by him playing only approximately 14 minutes a game. For now, this is all speculation but it's a situation to monitor at the trade deadline.

James van Riemsdyk scored a goal and registered an assist in Toronto's 4-1 win over Boston on Saturday.

It was van Riemsdyk's second straight multi-point game. He's also now found the back of the net in three of his last four contests. With nine goals and 15 points in 18 contests he's well on his way to surpassing the 60-point milestone for the second straight season. He can become an unrestricted free agent this summer and he'll likely get a substantial raise over his present $4.25 million cap hit.
