Logan Couture says his mouth is still pretty sore after undergoing facial surgery.

The fact that he's still sore five months after taking a puck to the face is pretty telling. "There’s good days and bad days," Couture said. "My bottom teeth are still my real teeth. They’ve tried to keep them so I don’t lose them. I don’t know if I’ll be able to, they’re still pretty sore. My top teeth are all fake now – my front six, I think. So, it’s different. It just feels different in my mouth. But everything else with my face and all that is healed. I’m lucky that it’s an injury that didn’t affect my training, and hopefully won’t affect me going forward." It sounds like he'll be fine for the start of training camp next month.

But he has having trouble locating the puck and ditched the shield in favor of a visor. "Figured enough damage has already been done," said Couture, who will require extensive dental work in the offseason. "If I get hit again, I’m just the unluckiest guy in the world." He would be.

Logan Couture is getting punished physically by the Edmonton Oilers.

Couture took a puck to his face on March 25 and missed the end of the regular season but returned for Game 1 of the playoffs. Couture needed a reconstruction of his mouth and it hasn't been pleasant eating for the 28-year-old. The Oilers have been targeting his facial region and he has been getting hit there. "That’s playoff hockey," coach Peter DeBoer said. "This isn’t the first team that’s tried to be physical on key guys. Logan Couture’s been targeted for physicality his whole life being the player he is. It’s not an issue." Couture ended the season with 25 goals and 52 points in 73 games.

I'm wearing as [protective] gear as you can possibly wear, and trying to be careful." As Couture mentioned, he's been wearing a full cage during Sharks' practices.
