Brandon Sutter might start the season as the Penguins' second-line center.
That's of course completely dependent on the availability of Evgeni Malkin, which is unclear. Sutter had 13 goals and 26 points in 81 games in 2013-14. If Malkin's undisclosed injury turns out to be a long-term problem, then that will help Sutter from an offensive production perspective. For now though, we can't recommend picking up Sutter in standard leagues. Oct 2 - 10:06 AM

Brandon Sutter looked to be in top form during Pittsburgh's 3-2 preseason win over Minnesota on Thursday night, notching the opening goal on the power play and burying the overtime winner.

Sutter notched 26 points in 81 games last season, and is still looking to rediscover his scoring touch that developed in the WHL and earned him 40 points in 72 games with the Hurricanes in 2009-10. Simon Despres had two big assists in the Pens' win, while Thomas Vanek and Zach Parise scored for the WIld.

Brandon Sutter isn't sure what to expect from new head coach Mike Johnston.

It's believed the Penguins bench boss wants an up-tempo, puck-possession game. "Hopefully, the system is something the guys will like. I'm sure they will," Sutter said. "[Johnston] seems like a good hockey mind." Johnston has spoken with Sutter on the phone, but they are expected to meet in person this week. Sutter agreed to a two-year extension with the Penguins on Tuesday.

Brandon Sutter has inked a two-year, $6.6 million contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The two-way center notched 13 goals and 13 assists in 81 games last season. Sutter is a key penalty killer and he contributed three shorthanded markers in 2013-14. His offense improved in the playoffs with five goals and seven points in 13 matches. Sutter fits in nicely on Pittsburgh's third line.
Aug 5 - 5:40 PM

Pittsburgh GM Jim Rutherford believes adequate progress is being made in the team's efforts to re-sign center Brandon Sutter.

"The best way to characterize the process is it's moving in the right direction," Rutherford said. "I would suspect by next week we might be able to get something done." The defensive-minded Sutter plays a very important role for Pittsburgh and will due a raise on the $2.7 million he earned last season.
Aug 2 - 7:36 AM

Pittsburgh general manager Jim Rutherford says he plans to re-sign restricted free agent Brandon Sutter and isn't worried about it.

"I'm not concerned at all about signing Sutter," Rutherford said. "Honestly, I'm not concerned about any of the restricted guys. At some point, we'll have them signed." Sutter is the biggest name among the Pens' restricted free agents, a list that also includes right winger Nick Spaling and defenseman Simon Despres. The Pens want to sign Sutter to a long-term deal, largely because he was outstanding in the most recent Stanley Cup playoffs, scoring five goals in 13 games and playing top-notch defense.

Brandon Sutter is a restricted free agent.

GM Jim Rutherford said talks will start with Pittsburgh's RFAs soon. Forwards Nick Spaling, Jayson Megna and Bobby Farnham as well as defensemen Simon Despres and Philip Samuelsson are in the same boat. Sutter, Spaling, Megna and Farnham can file for salary arbitration.
Jul 4 - 8:14 AM

Brandon Sutter continued his respectable post-season with a goal in the Penguins' 3-1 loss to the Rangers in New York Sunday night.

It was Sutter's fifth goal of the playoffs. The Rangers-Penguins series is tied at 3-3, with the deciding game to be played in Pittsburgh Tuesday night.
May 11 - 10:13 PM

Brandon Sutter netted a shorthanded goal in Pittsburgh's 4-2 victory over the New York Rangers.

May 8 - 9:41 AM

Brandon Sutter (undisclosed) should be fine for Game 1 of the second round.

Sutter left the Penguins' series-winning game on Monday before it's conclusion. "I'm happy with the way it's gone the last two days," Sutter said. "I'm feeling pretty good. It shouldn't be a problem going forward." Sutter is a solid defensive forward and that's something that Pittsburgh certainly needs.
Apr 30 - 1:30 PM

Brandon Sutter wasn't able to complete Game 6 of Pittsburgh's first round series against Columbus.

Sutter scored a goal early in the second period, but it's believed that he later sustained an injury while blocking a shot. The Penguins' defense has been an ongoing concern and it's one that will be amplified if Sutter isn't healthy in time for the second round.
Apr 29 - 10:37 AM

Third-line center Brandon Sutter had the winning goal in Game 1, a 4-3 triumph over the Columbus Blue Jackets, when the Penguins’ top four scorers combined for no goals and a minus-4 rating.

Big goals from Sutter don't surprise Pittsburgh coach Dan Blysma. "When he’s scored a goal, it’s always been a big goal," Bylsma said. "He’s right around the number he always seems to be at — 12 to 15 goals a year — but they always seem to be big goals." Eight of the Penguins’ 12 points in Game 1 were produced by defensemen or forwards who finished the game skating on the bottom two lines. The teams meet again for Game 2 today.
Apr 19 - 10:08 AM

Brandon Sutter netted the game-winning goal for Pittsburgh in Game 1 of their first round series.

This was Sutter's first postseason game-winning goal in 16 career games. Sutter isn't much of an offensive force, but he's a great third-line center and an important part of the Penguins' bid to win the Stanley Cup.
Apr 17 - 10:19 AM

With all-stars such as Sidney Crosby and Chris Kunitz out of the lineup, the Penguins got a two-goal night out of center Brandon Sutter Sunday night.

Sutter scored the first two goals of the game in the Penguins' 3-2 shootout win over the Avalanche in Colorado. They were Sutter's 12th and 13th goals of the season. Jussi Jokinen had the lone goal in a shootout. Jokinen put a backhand over Avalanche goalie Semyon Varlamov in the second round. The Penguins played without a number of injured players, including Crosby, who missed his first game of the season because of an upper-body injury. Crosby leads the NHL with 102 points (36 goals, 66 assists).
Apr 6 - 10:41 PM

Brandon Sutter will get a chance to center the Penguins' second line in Evgeni Malkin's absence.

Malkin is expected to miss the next 2-3 weeks, which basically translates to the being sidelined for the rest of the regular season. Sutter has been serving primarily as a bottom-six forward with Pittsburgh, so it will be interesting to see what he will do with this opportunity. His linemates will be Jussi Jokinen and James Neal.
