Alex Plante is off to a slow start with Oklahoma City of the AHL.
Plante suffered two concussions last season but that is not the reason for his slow start. The former first round pick in the 2007 Draft, has struggled since becoming a pro and is deep down in the Oilers depth chart. "Alex has to move his feet to be effective. If his feet are planted, no pun intended, his options (carrying the puck) aren’t there. You just can’t play catch with the puck (with your blue-line partner)," coach Todd Nelson said. The Edmonton Oilers signed restricted free agent Alex Plante to a one-year contract extension Thursday.

Plante had a strong season with the Oklahoma City Barons that kept him in the mix among the Oilers’ defensive depth options. The 15th overall pick in 2007 (of the three pieces acquired from the New York Islanders in the Ryan Smyth trade, Plante’s the only one still in the organization), things started going downhill for the mammoth defenseman immediately after he was drafted. In 2007-08, while still with the WHL’s Calgary Hitmen, Plante regressed from 38 points to two and missed time both while injured and healthy. To his credit, he rebounded in the same organization and has progressed enough that he’s a solid AHLer at this point in his career.

The Oilers assigned defenseman Alex Plante to Oklahoma City of the AHL.

The Oilers called up Plante on Dec. 26 and he was in the lineup for that night’s game at Vancouver. He suffered a concussion in that contest and has not played since. Plante, who was selected to play in the AHL All-Star Game on Jan. 30, will attempt to get back into form with the Barons.

Alex Plante suffered a concussion during Monday's game.

Plante was recalled on Monday and played only 5:04 minutes before Dale Weise of the Canucks slammed him face-first into the boards. Consider him day-to-day for now. The Oilers brought up Colten Teubert for Thursday's game to replace Plante.

Alex Plante logged 14:47 minutes in his first game since being called up from the AHL.

The Oilers decided to make a change after losing to Dallas 4-1 on Monday, which meant that Plante was a last minute call up. "It's actually kind of nice to just get here on the day of the game, it doesn't give you any chance to over-think it, just come and play how I've been playing in Oklahoma," he said. "I don't want to get crazy and start doing things I don't (normally) do." Plante had no points, but he was credited with three hits and he spent two minutes in the sin bin.

Defenseman Alex Plante has been sent back to Oklahoma City by the Edmonton Oilers.

Plante had rushed in to take the spot of Cam Barker, who sat out Sunday’s game with a sore shoulder. It’s expected that Colten Teubert will be coming up. Teubert, who was kept off the ice for much of training camp with a concussion, has never played an NHL game.

Alex Plante registered an assist in his season debut on Sunday.

Plante had already played in Oklahoma City on Friday and Houston on Saturday before he got called up for Sunday's contest. "It was hectic, I got the call late last night after the game, I just finished playing a game in Houston when they called me up," Plante said on Sunday. "I flew out this morning at 6 a.m., meaning I had to be up at 4:30 a.m., and got here until around 2:30 p.m. and just hung out until the game. I’ve never had the travel be quite as bad, but they managed my ice time accordingly and the guys played great. When you have guys playing great around you, it definitely helps you out as well." Plante was limited to 12:05 minutes as a result, but he still recorded a hit and a blocked shot, in addition to the assist.

The 15th pick of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft will make his 2011-12 debut against the St. Louis Blues on Sunday.

The Edmonton Oilers defense is likely to be without Andy Sutton for several games, so Alex Plante gets a chance prove that he belongs at the NHL level. Plante has 1 point in 7 NHL career games spread out between two seasons. He's not fantasy relevant since he's far from a full-timer at this point.

Alex Plante is sliding down the depth chart among defensemen for the Edmonton Oilers.

The first round pick, 15th overall in 2007, has played only eight games in the NHL and is likely 10th or 11th on the Oilers blueline. Oilers president Kevin Lowe thinks that Plante can still make it in the NHL. "Alex is still in his entry-level contract," Lowe said. "You don't start thinking about young players until they go through waivers. With a defenseman, it does take longer. Alex has had a chance to play NHL games. He moves the puck, he's shown leadership in Oklahoma City. He's stood up for his teammates, fighting guys maybe he shouldn't have fought. He's hung in. His teammates noticed that, so did the coaches." Stay tuned but expect him in the NHL only sporadically this season.
