The Pittsburgh Penguins split up their top two defense pairings for the last pre-season game on Friday.
Kris Letang and Olli Maatta were playing together but on Friday it was Ian Cole and Letang with Maatta seeing action alongside Rob Scuderi. "I enjoy playing against other teams' top lines and best players," Cole said. "I think I can play with the skill guys and play with the big, strong guys, too. I think I can do a little bit of both, and obviously that's who Tanger plays against." Cole has little fantasy value with 15 points in 75 games last season but he did manage eight in 20 games with the Penguins. Oct 3 - 9:52 AM

Pittsburgh has started talking contract with Ian Cole.

Cole, who is slated to be a restricted free agent, appeared in 20 games with the Penguins after he was acquired from St. Louis. The 26-year-old defender has played in 187 games over the last five seasons, but he may finally be ready for full-time NHL duty next year.

Ian Cole may have finally found an NHL home that appreciates him.

Cole came over to Pittsburgh after spending the first five-plus seasons of his career in St. Louis, unhappily accumulating just 31 points in 167 sporadic games. "Cole badly wants to remain in Pittsburgh," according to reporter Josh Yohe, and apparently it's mutual. Said Penguins Coach Mike Johnson, "he’s a good player. I didn’t realize we were getting that good of a player." Cole, still just 26 years old, scored a goal and eight points in 20 games with Pittsburgh after the trade. He also put up a pair of assists in their five playoff games while averaging 23 minutes of ice time per game. Cole is a RFA, and has yet to cross the million dollar threshold.

The Pittsburgh Penguins lost 5-3 to the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday, but Ian Cole continues his surprising run of production.

With two assists on Saturday, Cole has a three-game point streak going (four helpers) and five points in as many games. Even with a -1 rating in this past game, Cole clearly delivered on Saturday.
Apr 4 - 5:06 PM

Ian Cole will draw into Pittsburgh's lineup Wednesday.

He's projected to play alongside Rob Scuderi in his Penguins debut. Cole was acquired from St. Louis at the trade deadline for Robert Bortuzzo and a seventh-round pick.
Mar 4 - 6:42 PM

Ian Cole has been sent to Pittsburgh for Robert Bortuzzo and a seventh-round pick.

Cole has nine points, 63 blocks and a plus-16 rating in 54 games with the Blues this campaign.
Mar 2 - 1:40 PM

Ian Cole participated in Saturday morning's practice and is probable for the night game against the Oilers.

He has been dealing with an upper-body injury but he seems to be over the worst of it. If Cole can play it will be at the expense of Chris Butler.
Feb 28 - 1:51 PM

Ian Cole is questionable Saturday due to an upper-body injury.

Cole missed Thursday's game due to the ailment. Chris Butler filled the void in that contest and he'll presumably remain in the lineup if Cole is forced to miss another game.
Feb 27 - 6:49 PM

Ian Cole didn't play Thursday because of a minor upper-body injury.

He had been playing through the injury for the past couple of games. Cole's spot in the lineup was taken by Chris Butler.
Feb 27 - 11:53 AM

Ian Cole, Joakim Lindstrom, and Chris Porter will be scratched against the Winnipeg Jets on Thursday night.

Of the three, only Cole has a modicum of fantasy value with 40 hits, 44 PIMs, and 61 blocks through 52 games from the blue line this season.
Feb 26 - 7:38 PM

Ian Cole will tag in for Chris Bulter against the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday night.

Cole was a healthy scratch the past three games and eight of the past 16 games, and comes in with five points, 23 hits, 25 PIMs, and 45 blocks through 34 games this season.
Jan 13 - 7:46 PM

Ian Cole, Matt Lindstrom and Martin Brodeur will all be healthy scratches for Saturday night's game against Carolina.

This is a repeat of Thursday night's linuep and should come as no surprise. No real fantasy value here.
Jan 10 - 2:09 PM

Ian Cole, Matt Lindstrom, and Martin Brodeur will all be scratched against the Sharks on Thursday night.

Cole and Lindstrom have no fantasy value, and depending upon how deep your league is, or how much of a gambler you are, Brodeur's fantasy value may be fading real fast.
Jan 8 - 7:50 PM

Ian Cole is set to return to the Blues lineup Monday night against the Avalanche.

Cole had been a healthy scratch for five of the past seven games but will pair up with Chris Butler Monday night. In 30 games played this season, the defenseman has three goals, two assists, 21 penalty minutes, and is a plus eight.
