Blue Jackets defenseman Ian Cole is willing to forego unrestricted free agency if he gets the right offer from Columbus.
The 29-year-old was traded from Pittsburgh to Ottawa before landing in Columbus near the trade deadline. He had five goals and 20 points in 67 contests in 2017-18, but he's more of a shutdown type of player. "As a player, you really look forward to this unrestricted free-agency status," Cole told The Athletic. "However, I’m not opposed to signing something before (July 1). It has to be the right situation and the right factors, certainly, but it’s not something I’m dead set against. I’m certainly open to a lot of things at this point." It'll be interesting to see if the two sides can get a deal done. Jun 8 - 9:27 PM

Date:

Ian Cole is set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer.

Now that Columbus has been eliminated from the playoffs, Cole's completed his three-year, $6.3 million contract. Cole spent most of the 2017-18 campaign with Pittsburgh, but he was dealt to Ottawa in the Derick Brassard trade and didn't even play a single game with the Senators before he was flipped to Columbus. Although he's typically not a big offensive force, he made some noteworthy contributions with the Blue Jackets as he had seven points in 20 regular season games and three points in six playoff contests. It will be interesting to see if the Blue Jackets attempt to retain his services after that.

Ian Cole has been fined $5,000 for a dangerous trip on Vancouver's Brandon Sutter.

The fine is the maximum allowable under the terms of the CBA. The incident occurred in Saturday's match and it put Cole in the penalty box for two minutes.
Apr 1 - 2:49 PM

Ian Cole picked up an assist with a plus-2 rating in Tuesday's 7-3 road win in Edmonton.

The former Penguins rearguard is really making his presence felt in C-Bus. He has picked up two goals with seven points and a plus-13 rating in 15 contests since coming over from the Steel City. He has been even or in the positive in plus/minus rating in each of his games with the Blue Jackets to emerge as a depth player in most deeper fantasy pools.
Mar 28 - 2:06 AM

Ian Cole has helped David Savard regain his form on the third pairing for the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Savard had struggled before the trade for Cole at the deadline from Ottawa and that has helped the Blue Jackets as their third unit on the blueline is now effective. Cole has no real fantasy value in traditional pools but picks up hits and blocked shots and that helps poolies who use those categories.
Mar 12 - 7:59 AM

Ottawa has traded Ian Cole to Columbus in exchange for Nick Moutrey and a 2020 third-round draft pick.

Cole was acquired from Pittsburgh in the trade that sent Derick Brassard to the Penguins, but it was expected he would be flipped before Monday's trade deadline. Cole has 13 points, 69 hits and 91 blocks in 47 games this season.
Feb 26 - 9:45 AM

The Ottawa Senators have acquired Ian Cole from the Pittsburgh Penguins.

This somehow turned into a three-way trade between the Penguins, Senators and Golden Knights, with Vegas retaining 40 percent of Derick Brassard's cap hit. Cole probably shouldn't get too comfortable in Ottawa because the pending unrestricted free agent will likely be on the move before Monday's trade deadline. The 29-year-old has three goals and 13 points in 47 games this season. Ottawa is also getting a first-round pick in 2018, a third-round pick in 2019 and prospect Filip Gustavsson all from Pittsburgh.
Feb 23 - 9:42 PM

Ian Cole is still a member of the Pittsburgh Penguins for now.

The Penguins still have to rework a trade that would get them Derick Brassard from Ottawa. Cole is listed as healthy scratch for Pittsburgh against Carolina on Friday night.

Feb 23 - 7:34 PM

The Ottawa Senators have acquired Ian Cole from the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Cole was part of the Derick Brassard trade. He might not want to get too comfortable because if the Senators can manage it, they will probably flip him before the trade deadline. For Pittsburgh, the inclusion of Cole was likely a cap consideration as he comes with a $2.1 million annual hit. Cole would still look good as a third-pairing defenseman on another team though.
Feb 23 - 2:56 PM

Ian Cole will be a healthy scratch in Wednesday's game against the Anaheim Ducks.

Cole has been scratched in four consecutive games. He has two goals and five assists in 36 games this season. Jean-Sebastien Dea will also watch the game from the press box.
Jan 17 - 9:50 PM

The Pittsburgh Penguins have decided to sit Ian Cole in the press box this afternoon against the Detroit Red Wings.

He'll now sit in back-to-back games, and has picked up seven points in 36 games this season. Matt Murray (personal) also will be scratched, while Bryan Rust (upper body), Chad Ruhwedel (upper body) and Carter Rowney (upper body) will miss the game due to their respective injuries.

Ian Cole tied the game for the Penguins in the opening period, but it was the only goal the Pens would score in the 2-1 loss. The defenseman now has two goals and five points in 27 games this season for Pittsburgh.

The Pittsburgh Penguins are reportedly trying to trade Ian Cole.

Cole had a decent role with the Penguins last season and recorded a career-high 26 points as a result, but his position has declined in 2017-18. He's averaging just 16:50 minutes per game and has spent the last three contests in the press box. From a fantasy perspective he's been a non-factor in standard leagues with a goal and three points in 20 contests. A trade would probably be in Cole's best interests as he might enjoy a bigger role with a different squad.

Ian Cole will be a healthy scratch in Monday's game against the Philadelphia Flyers.

This will be Cole's third straight game as a healthy scratch. He has one goal, three points and a minus-5 rating this season. Josh Archibald will also watch the game from the press box. Evgeni Malkin is still out with an injury.
