It's still not clear if he'll actually play in tonight's game. If he doesn't, it won't be because of the mouth injury he suffered earlier this season. He'll be a game-time decision.

"That's obviously up to the coaches, but I feel good," Cole said. "Nothing is wrong with my body. I'm healthy. I'm feeling really good out here." Penguins coach Mike Sullivan has described Cole as a game-time decision, so we'll have to see what happens there. He'll be wearing a cage for now at the recommendation of his doctors.

Cole lost three teeth and hurt his jaw when he was struck in the mouth by a puck on Oct. 7 against Nashville. However, he said his conditioning is fine and he can play with a shield protecting his mouth if he gets the green light to dress versus the New York Rangers.

The incident happened in the first period and Cole did not return. "He’s fearless," goalie Matt Murray said of Cole. "We know he’ll be alright, but we’re thinking about him, for sure. That flows through our lineup, I think, that type of character." Cole lost a lot of teeth on Saturday and look elsewhere for now for a fifth or sixth defenseman.

Ian Cole played with some significant injuries during the 2017 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

According to Penguins beat writer Josh Yohe, Cole sustained a broken hand and broken ribs early in the team's second-round series versus Washington. Cole had nine assists and logged nearly 19 minutes of ice time per match in 25 postseason outings en route to a Stanley Cup triumph.

Ian Cole contributed his seventh assist of the 2017 playoffs on Tuesday night.

He had the primary assist on Evgeni Malkin's seventh goal of the postseason in a 2-1 loss to Ottawa in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Final. Cole has chipped in two helpers in the last three matches. He has also amassed 51 blocked shots in 18 playoff matches this year.

Ian Cole has continued to play well in the postseason after he was in the doghouse for parts of the the regular season.

Cole was a healthy scratch for 11 games in late January and early February after he posted a minus-17 in his first 45 games. He is a plus-22 in 44 games since and has transformed into a much more reliable defender for the Penguins.
