Ian Cole has continued to play well in the postseason after he was in the doghouse for parts of the the regular season.
Cole was a healthy scratch for 11 games in late January and early February after he posted a minus-17 in his first 45 games. He is a plus-22 in 44 games since and has transformed into a much more reliable defender for the Penguins. Jun 1 - 9:29 AM

Date:

Ian Cole and Jeff Zatkoff will be scratched against the Islanders on Tuesday.

Cole was a great source of blocked shots earlier in the season, but his rates have dropped off. For the season he has seven points, 34 PIMS, 87 hits, and 90 blocks through 53 games. He can be a nice plug in a pinch, but there are more consistent vacuums out there.
Mar 8 - 6:39 PM

Ian Cole will be in the lineup when the Penguins take on the Buffalo Sabres on Sunday.

Cole has served as a healthy scratch in 11 each of Pittsburgh's last 11 contests, so expect him to be a little rusty.
Feb 21 - 12:26 PM

Ian Cole will serve as a healthy scratch in Thursday's game against the Detroit Red Wings.

This will be his 10th consecutive as a healthy scratch. Cole has no goals and four assists in 45 games this season. Sergei Plotnikov will also watch the game from the press box.
Feb 18 - 6:48 PM

Ian Cole and Sergei Plotnikov will each be scratched against the Hurricanes on Friday.

Through 45 games this season Cole has posted 32 PIMs, 71 hits, and 80 blocks. Not too shabby in the right league.

Feb 8 - 6:54 PM

Ian Cole and Sergei Plotnikov will each be scratched against the Panthers on Saturday night.

In 45 games this season Cole has accumulated 32 PIMs, 71 hits, and 80 blocks. Not too shabby for the defensive defender, however he hasn't played since Jan. 21st. Meanwhile, Plotnikov, who has 32 games to his credit, hasn't played since Jan. 6th.
Feb 6 - 6:50 PM

Ian Cole will be scratched against Tampa Bay on Friday night after all.

Through 45 games this season, Cole has managed to put up some nice back end numbers with 32 PIMs, 71 hits, and 80 blocks. Though he hasn't played since Jan. 21st.
Feb 5 - 7:29 PM

Ian Cole and Conor Sheary will be scratched against the Senators on Tuesday night.

Through 45 games this season Ian Cole has produced four points, 32 PIMS, 71 hits, and 80 blocks. Not too bad if your league rewards depth defenders.
Feb 2 - 6:49 PM

Ian Cole and Sergei Plotnikov will be scratched against the Devils on Tuesday night.

There's some non-traditional fantasy value to be found here. Cole has amassed 32 PIMs with 71 hits and 80 blocks in 45 games thus far from the blue line. Plotnikov meanwhile, who's been scratched since Jan. 6th, is stuck on 20 PIMs and 65 hits up front.

Jan 26 - 6:45 PM

Ian Cole was a healthy scratch Saturday.

He was replaced in the lineup by Derrick Pouliot who made his seasonal debut. Cole has four assists and a minus-17 rating in 45 games. If he is on your fantasy team we would suggest changing sports.
Jan 24 - 10:25 AM

Ian Cole recorded two assists in Pittsburgh's 4-3 victory against Colorado Thursday night.

Cole has three points in 19 contests in 2015-16. His modest offensive contributions is disappointing, but not shocking. He's certainly capable of more than this, but he's far from a safe bet to heat up as the season goes on.

Ian Cole shaved his beard to change things up on Friday.

Cole was a minus-11 heading into Friday's action and it may have worked as the defenseman was even in a 2-1 loss to the Blue Jackets. "It's a little embarrassing because I pride myself on being a really strong two-way defenseman," Cole said. "Being that far down, it's obviously not the goal. Have to turn it around." Cole has only one assist in 16 games this season so if he is on your fantasy team, you most likely aren't winning.

Ian Cole is moving up the depth charts of the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Cole was acquired from the St. Louis Blues at the trade deadline and it was thought at the time he was a sixth or seventh defenseman. But he has surprised many including coach Mike Johnson. "Ian Cole, to me, is a blend," Johnston said. "He defends well, and he does have some jump in his game. I don't consider him a true offensive defenseman. I think he's a little bit of a blend." Cole could see some power play time this season but for now the Penguins are going with four forwards and one defenseman with the man-advantage. Look for 25-30 points from Cole this season.

The Pittsburgh Penguins split up their top two defense pairings for the last pre-season game on Friday.

Kris Letang and Olli Maatta were playing together but on Friday it was Ian Cole and Letang with Maatta seeing action alongside Rob Scuderi. "I enjoy playing against other teams' top lines and best players," Cole said. "I think I can play with the skill guys and play with the big, strong guys, too. I think I can do a little bit of both, and obviously that's who Tanger plays against." Cole has little fantasy value with 15 points in 75 games last season but he did manage eight in 20 games with the Penguins.
