Mikael Backlund had two assists in Calgary's 7-4 loss to Edmonton Wednesday night.

Backlund also had three shots on goal, though he did finish the contest with a minus-two rating. He set new career-highs last season with 21 goals and 47 points and could finish in that range again in 2016-17.

Mikael Backlund was back in the Calgary lineup Sunday.

The center suffered a concussion at the World Cup on September 20 and considers himself fully healed. Backlund was the Flames best player Sunday as he had five shots on goal and also had a couple go off the iron. "As a team, I thought we played better than the score showed," Backlund said of the 4-0 loss to Winnipeg. "Personally, I felt pretty good ... I feel I can still get better, timing-wise and just knowing where everyone is and all that. But I thought I played pretty good." Backlund had a career high 21 goals and 47 points last season and expect him to do even better this season if he remains healthy and Johnny Gaudreau is part of the team at the outset of the season.

Mikael Backlund will be in the lineup for Sunday's exhibition tilt against Winnipeg.

It will be his first game action since he suffered a concussion on Sept. 20 at the World Cup of Hockey while playing for Team Sweden. "I've been feeling good now for almost a week," Backlund said. "I've been skating. It's my fourth day skating. I feel good."

Mikael Backlund (concussion) feels like if it came down to it, he might have been able to play in the World Cup final.

Of course it's moot because Sweden didn't make it that far, but it does suggest that Backlund feels capable of playing at this point if there were stakes involved as the final games were on Thursday. Instead he took part in the Flames' practice Thursday while wearing a no-contact jersey. "It was fun to be back out there with the boys, and everything felt good," said Backlund. Despite his optimism, we'd still consider him day-to-day and caution against making any assumptions about his availability given how unpredictable recoveries from a concussion can be.

Mikael Backlund (concussion) skated Thursday, but was wearing a non-contact jersey.

Backlund was injured while representing Sweden in the World Cup. He had 21 goals and 47 points in 82 contests in 2015-16.

Mikael Backlund has left Team Sweden to do his concussion rehab in Calgary.

Backlund sustained the ailment during Sweden's match with Finland when Sami Lepisto hit him square in the face. Obviously leaving the World Cup early is not a good sign, however it is not clear how serious his symptoms are at the moment. Stay tuned.

The Calgary Flames have confirmed that Mikael Backlund is dealing with a concussion.

Mikael Backlund may have sustained a concussion at the World Cup of Hockey.

Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman is reporting that Backlund will meet with Calgary Flames doctors for evaluation. It sounds like his tournament is over after he was hit hard by Finland's Sami Lepisto on Tuesday.
Sep 21 - 3:03 PM

Mikael Backlund has been added to Team Sweden's roster for the upcoming World Cup of Hockey.

Backlund will take Henrik Zetterberg's spot on the roster. Zetterberg, who was supposed to be the team's captain, pulled out of the tournament because of an undisclosed injury. Backlund has represented Sweden at three World Championship and two World Junior Championships.
Sep 1 - 9:50 AM

Mikael Backlund is on the bubble when it comes to the roster selection for Team Sweden for the World Cup.

Backlund recently finished a stint serving Sweden in the 2016 World Championship where Sweden only had eight NHL regulars on the roster. Because of the team's relative lack of NHL talent, Sweden leaned heavily on Backlund, getting him to log over 21 minutes in six of the Swede's eight games. "It’s always an honor to play for Team Sweden and for me to say no, it’s going to take a lot," Backlund said. Perhaps his willingness to answer the call when asked will help push him over the edge in the roster selection process. If he is part of Team Sweden, it would be as a third or fourth-line forward.

May 25 - 8:17 AM

Mikael Backlund scored his first career hat trick during Thursday's 7-3 win over Vancouver.

You knew it was going to be a special night for Backlund after he banked the opening salvo off Ryan Miller from well behind the goal line. That was on the power play. He'd later add an even strength goal and a short-handed goal off a pretty feed to cap the achievement. He now has 21 goals (new career high) and 46 points this season, with six goals and seven points over his last three games.
Apr 8 - 12:43 AM

The 2015-16 campaign has the potential to be the first time Mikael Backlund has played in all 82 games of a single season.

Going into the season Backlund had only surpassed the 70-game mark on two occasions and his career-high was 76 contests in 2013-14. He's already bested that by participating in 78 games thus far. "I don’t need to prove (I can stay healthy) to anyone," Backlund said. "But it was a goal for myself to play 82 games." Along the way he's scored 17 goals and 42 points in 2015-16.
