Brendan Smith would sign a new deal with the Rangers before the start of free agency if it was at market value.
The pending UFA enjoyed his time with the Rangers and thinks the team is a good fit for him but isn't willing to take a discount to sign before the June 25 window to talk to other teams opens up. Smith was dealt from Detroit at the trade deadline with the Red Wings receiving a second and third round pick for the defenseman. He had three goals and nine points in 51 games between the two teams so his fantasy value in traditional pools is negligible. Jun 12 - 8:08 AM

Brendan Smith's agent, Anton Thun, anticipates speaking to Rangers GM Jeff Gorton "in the next week or so."

Smith has expressed an interest in re-signing with the Rangers that Thun echoed, but that doesn't necessarily mean that he's willing to agree to a discounted contract. "He’s looking for a good fit with a good organization, and the Rangers certainly qualify. But to pass up free agency, Brendan’s going to need a contract that reflects market value," Thun said. The Rangers acquired Smith just before the trade deadline in exchange for second- and third-round picks. The blueliner had four assists, a plus-eight rating, and logged 19:41 minutes of ice time per game in 12 playoff games during the Rangers' run.

Brendan Smith can become an unrestricted free agent on July 1, but he is open to returning to the New York Rangers.

Brendan Smith logged just 2:34 minutes of ice time in the third period of Game 2 against Ottawa.

Smith wasn't used at all in the last 5:37 minutes of the Rangers' third period. He went on to log 20:44 in total in that contest, but the game went to double overtime and he ranked last on the Rangers' defensemen in ice time. "Any player at any level, a professional level, wants to play more, and I strive to try to keep getting better to play more minutes, and that’s all I’m gonna try to do," Smith said. "For anybody, you always want to play more minutes and hopefully down the stretch here I’ll be able to prove that I can play a little more minutes at different times. But that’s up to me to prove it." The Rangers sent a second and a third round pick to Detroit to acquire him in February.
May 2 - 10:21 AM

Brendan Smith will face his original club for the first time on Sunday.

"I'm excited to be back here," Smith said. "I'm sad this will be the last time, but I'm going to take every moment in, and it will be fun to play against all the guys I've been competing against in practice for the last six years." Smith was drafted 27th overall in 2007 by the Red Wings and spent the first 291 games of his career wearing the winged wheel. Since joining New York he's posted no points with five hits and 11 blocks in five games while playing over 22 minutes per game on average.

Brendan Smith won't play in Tuesday's game against Washington.

Smith was acquired from the Red Wings just a few hours ago, so he obviously didn't make it to Madison Square Garden in time for puck drop.

Brendan Smith said Monday that there have been contract talks with the Detroit Red Wings.

However, it's unclear if a deal is close and Smith is a possible trade candidate with Wednesday's deadline just around the corner. "There's nothing I can do," he said. "I guess that would be added energy or wasted energy that I don't care too much to waste. There's a lot of speculation all different ways." He is eligible for unrestricted free agency in the summer.
Feb 28 - 9:59 AM

Brendan Smith could be moved at the trade deadline.

The pending unrestricted free agent may want to go somewhere else this summer, so the Red Wings may attempt to get something for him while they still can. Smith has averaged 18:20 of ice time this campaign, while contributing five points, 39 hits and 34 blocks in 30 appearances.

That means he isn't expected to play on Friday versus the New York Islanders. "I'm excited to get back," Smith said. "It's been kind of a long road here. I'm feeling really well." He expects to wear a brace on his knee for the rest of the season.
