Brendan Smith, who was injured when he was slew-footed by San Jose's Logan Couture on Thursday is questionable for Saturday afternoon's game against Nashville.

The bad news is that he injured his arm in the fall that resulted from the slew-foot. The good news is that x-rays came back negative. Consider Smith day-to-day.

Brendan Smith (hand) hopes to return soon, but he's doubtful for Wednesday's game.

Smith took part in Tuesday's practice. He sustained the injury during a fight with Nick Foligno on Nov. 18. "I think I've been playing pretty well and all of a sudden it's a fluke incident like that gets me hurt," Smith said. "It's frustrating. But if we didn't catch it and I played another game and got more stuff from my glove, it could have been a lot worse. I could have been out for a month. You can look at it as a blessing in disguise that our docs figured it out quick."

Brendan Smith is coming into the final year of his two year contract that is paying him $1.26 million annually on the Detroit Red Wings' blueline.

Smith has a considerable offensive upside as a puck-carrying demon with the ability to produce lots of points. The Red Wings didn't see that last season though, and his tendency to turn over the puck was perfectly described by Henrik Zetterberg, who joked that Smith creates offense for both sides. Smith accumulated 19 points in 71 games last season, but will have to produce more if he envisions himself making big bucks on a long term basis in Detroit.
