Brendan Smith missed Thursday's practice due to soreness.

Smith is still projected to play on Friday, so this is just a FYI. Although the nature of his ailment wasn't specified, it's worth noting that he took a shot to the throat on Wednesday, although he stayed in that game.

Brendan Smith will probably see more time on the power play with Niklas Kronwall out of action.

"Once you get out there you have to be ready and prepared," Smith said. "I know I can play. I'm excited about it, any opportunity like that is fun. If I get the chance, it would be cool." He has one power-play goal this season, but he has averaged just 16 seconds of ice time on the man advantage. If he doesn't get much of a chance then Danny DeKeyser is another option for the Wings.

Brendan Smith has been contributing more offensively, but coach Jeff Blashill has been impressed by the defenseman's play at both ends of the ice.

"Smitty was great, just his overall game," said Blashill after Saturday's win over Buffalo. "Offensively he's good, for sure. But with him in particular he needs to have a real good 200-foot game. He needs to be managing his game, and I felt he did an awesome job of managing his game. I was real happy with him overall." He has posted two goals and five assists over his last eight games. Offensive output like this is unlikely to last, but it makes him worth trying out right now while he's hot.

With a goal during Thursday's 5-2 loss to Pittsburgh, Brendan Smith now has points in three of his last four games.

Don't look now, but Smith is now all the way up to three goals and nine points this season. And it only took 30 games. All kidding aside for a playing not known for his scoring, Smith's picked up six of his nine points in December and is on track to set crack 20 points for the first time.

Brendan Smith’s two-point night led the Red Wings to a 3-2 win against the Predators on Saturday.

Smith has one of his two goals and three of his six points over his past four games. He also had three shots in this one, to give him a measly 28 on the year. If you are looking at Smith in your league, you might play in the world’s deepest league. Riley Sheahan and Luke Glendening got the other goals.

Brendan Smith appreciates the time off players get for Christmas.

"It's nice to unwind for sure," Smith said. "It's good for everybody. The biggest thing is you can actually see family. They're just not coming in for the game and you kind of see them after the game for a little bit. You can actually talk to your family and see what is going on with them. It's kind of a cool experience and I'm going to enjoy it for sure." He will get to host some family for dinner this week before getting back on the ice, where he has two assists in his last three outings.
