Brendan Smith will draw back into the Rangers' lineup on Friday.
Smith had spent the last two games serving as a healthy scratch. That's far from ideal given that this is the first season of a four-year, $17.4 million contract. "I see him (among) our top defensemen, but he has to play accordingly and I feel that there’s definitely room for improvement in his case," Alain Vigneault said. "At the end of the day, I’m sure he knows that." Now that Smith's back in the lineup, he's projected to play alongside Brady Skjei. Oct 13 - 5:17 AM

Date:

Brendan Smith will be a healthy scratch in Tuesday's game against the St. Louis Blues.

Smith played in the first two games of the regular season, but this will be his second straight game as a healthy scratch. Fellow defenseman Anthony DeAngelo will also watch the game from the press box. The Rangers will go with a blue line of Ryan McDonagh and Marc Staal, Brady Skjei and Kevin Shattenkirk, and Nick Holden and Steven Kampfer.

Brendan Smith will be scratched Sunday night against Montreal.

Smith struggled in Saturday's loss to Toronto with a minus-2 rating in 14:49 of ice time. The Rangers will dress seven defensemen in the contest with Steven Kampfer and Nick Holden entering the lineup. Rookie center Filip Chytil will also be scratched Sunday night.

The New York Rangers made their re-signing of Brendan Smith official.

The Rangers didn't disclose the terms of the contract, but it's reportedly a four-year, $17.4 million deal. Smith had three goals and nine points in 63 penalty minutes in 51 games with the Detroit Red Wings and New York Rangers last season. The 28-year-old defenseman could have become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

Brendan Smith and the New York Rangers are reportedly close to finishing a four-year deal.

According to TSN's Bob McKenzie, the annual average value will be $4.35 million. Smith finished the 2016-17 campaign with the Rangers and could have become an unrestricted free agent this weekend.

Brendan Smith might get $4 million per year from the Rangers.

It's believed the two sides are close to agreeing to terms on a new contract before Smith becomes an unrestricted free agent on July 1. He skated in 18 games with the Rangers during the regular season and 12 playoff contests after he was acquired from Detroit. The Red Wings were hoping for a chance to get him back, but it looks like they may have been outbid by New York.
Jun 28 - 12:12 PM

Brendan Smith would sign a new deal with the Rangers before the start of free agency if it was at market value.

The pending UFA enjoyed his time with the Rangers and thinks the team is a good fit for him but isn't willing to take a discount to sign before the June 25 window to talk to other teams opens up. Smith was dealt from Detroit at the trade deadline with the Red Wings receiving a second and third round pick for the defenseman. He had three goals and nine points in 51 games between the two teams so his fantasy value in traditional pools is negligible.

Brendan Smith's agent, Anton Thun, anticipates speaking to Rangers GM Jeff Gorton "in the next week or so."

Smith has expressed an interest in re-signing with the Rangers that Thun echoed, but that doesn't necessarily mean that he's willing to agree to a discounted contract. "He’s looking for a good fit with a good organization, and the Rangers certainly qualify. But to pass up free agency, Brendan’s going to need a contract that reflects market value," Thun said. The Rangers acquired Smith just before the trade deadline in exchange for second- and third-round picks. The blueliner had four assists, a plus-eight rating, and logged 19:41 minutes of ice time per game in 12 playoff games during the Rangers' run.

Brendan Smith can become an unrestricted free agent on July 1, but he is open to returning to the New York Rangers.

"Absolutely," Smith said when asked if he wanted to come back. "I really enjoyed being here. I like the guys, the group." He was acquired from Detroit just before the trade deadline in exchange for second- and third-round picks.

Brendan Smith logged just 2:34 minutes of ice time in the third period of Game 2 against Ottawa.

Smith wasn't used at all in the last 5:37 minutes of the Rangers' third period. He went on to log 20:44 in total in that contest, but the game went to double overtime and he ranked last on the Rangers' defensemen in ice time. "Any player at any level, a professional level, wants to play more, and I strive to try to keep getting better to play more minutes, and that’s all I’m gonna try to do," Smith said. "For anybody, you always want to play more minutes and hopefully down the stretch here I’ll be able to prove that I can play a little more minutes at different times. But that’s up to me to prove it." The Rangers sent a second and a third round pick to Detroit to acquire him in February.
May 2 - 10:21 AM

Brendan Smith will face his original club for the first time on Sunday.

"I'm excited to be back here," Smith said. "I'm sad this will be the last time, but I'm going to take every moment in, and it will be fun to play against all the guys I've been competing against in practice for the last six years." Smith was drafted 27th overall in 2007 by the Red Wings and spent the first 291 games of his career wearing the winged wheel. Since joining New York he's posted no points with five hits and 11 blocks in five games while playing over 22 minutes per game on average.

Brendan Smith will make his Rangers debut against the Bruins on Thursday.

"I'm excited to be on a good team that's in the playoff hunt," Smith told the New York Post after practice Wednesday. "I love playoff hockey, so it's an exciting time to come to a good team like this." Smith, who will skate to the right of Ryan McDonagh as the team's top pairing, has five points and 34 penalty minutes in 33 games this season.

Brendan Smith won't play in Tuesday's game against Washington.

Smith was acquired from the Red Wings just a few hours ago, so he obviously didn't make it to Madison Square Garden in time for puck drop.

Feb 28 - 12:50 PM

Brendan Smith said Monday that there have been contract talks with the Detroit Red Wings.

However, it's unclear if a deal is close and Smith is a possible trade candidate with Wednesday's deadline just around the corner. "There's nothing I can do," he said. "I guess that would be added energy or wasted energy that I don't care too much to waste. There's a lot of speculation all different ways." He is eligible for unrestricted free agency in the summer.
