Brendan Smith will play in Game 3 against Tampa Bay on Sunday after being a healthy scratch in the first two games.

Kyle Quincey is expected to take a seat, though that's not guaranteed. Through the first 24 playoff games of his career, Smith has posted five points, 20 blocks, 24 PIMs, and 37 hits.
Apr 17 - 2:16 PM

Brendan Smith may draw back into the Detroit lineup for Sunday's Game 3 against Tampa.

He has been a healthy scratch for the first two games of the series but Alexey Marchenko hasn't been particularly impressive and Red Wing coach Jeff Blashill will likely shake up his roster a little.
Apr 16 - 9:57 AM

Brendan Smith could be an option for Game 2 on Friday night.

He was a healthy scratch in the first game against Tampa Bay and it was a physical contest. "Brendan brings a toughness that can be an element in those situations," coach Jeff Blashill said. "I'm not worried about guys pushing each other back and forth. That doesn't do much. In fact, the referees did a great job of policing that. What we need to do is make sure that we're taking hits to make plays, that we are making it hard it on them between whistles." If Smith plays then Alexey Marchenko could be in the press box.
Apr 15 - 8:02 AM

Brendan Smith is a healthy scratch for Game 1 of Detroit's first round series against Tampa Bay.

Smith has three goals and 15 points in 63 regular season contests. Detroit hasn't used him since March 26 though.
Apr 13 - 7:19 PM

Brendan Smith will be a healthy scratch in Saturday's game against the Rangers.

Through 63 games this season Smith has posted 15 points with 62 PIMs and 94 hits. Not bad, but not enough to warrant a regular roster spot.

Brendan Smith, Teemu Pulkkinen, and Tomas Jurco will each be scratched against Minnesota on Friday.

Mar 5 - 9:18 AM

Brendan Smith might draw back into the Red Wings' lineup on Sunday.

Smith has been a healthy scratch for three straight games. If Smith does play then it will likely be alongside Mike Green. It's worth noting that But Wings coach Jeff Blashill dismissed the idea that Smith was sent to the press box because of something he did wrong. "I’ve got seven, in my opinion, NHL defensemen that I can only play six of them," Blashill said. "We’re splitting hairs a little bit on who goes in and who goes out."
Mar 4 - 5:55 PM

Brendan Smith will be scratched against the Avalanche on Saturday night.

Through 53 games this season Smith has posted just 13 points with 43 PIMs and 73 hits. Not quite enough to warrant a spot on your roster, unfortunately.

Coach Jeff Blashill likes the way Brendan Smith is playing.

"He's made more positive plays than negatives, and that's what I look at the end of the night for each guy," said the Red Wings bench boss. Blashill likes the way Smith is managing risk versus reward plays.
Feb 6 - 10:08 AM

Brendan Smith missed Thursday's practice due to soreness.

Smith is still projected to play on Friday, so this is just a FYI. Although the nature of his ailment wasn't specified, it's worth noting that he took a shot to the throat on Wednesday, although he stayed in that game.
Jan 21 - 4:54 PM

Brendan Smith will probably see more time on the power play with Niklas Kronwall out of action.

"Once you get out there you have to be ready and prepared," Smith said. "I know I can play. I'm excited about it, any opportunity like that is fun. If I get the chance, it would be cool." He has one power-play goal this season, but he has averaged just 16 seconds of ice time on the man advantage. If he doesn't get much of a chance then Danny DeKeyser is another option for the Wings.
