Jim O'Brien scored the only Ottawa goal in a 2-1 overtime loss to the Bruins Thursday night.
The power play marker was the fifth of the campaign for O'Brien, a figure that amazingly leads all Ottawa forwards and stands only one tally behind the injured Erik Karlsson for the team lead. Kaspars Daugavins and Zack Smith drew assists on the goal. Feb 28 - 10:00 PM

Senators coach Paul MacLean has been happy with Jim O'Brien since he was called up on Feb. 3.

"Down the road right now is where he is right now," said MacLean. "That's where I would say at this point he's going to stay, in that third-, fourth-line centre spot, killing penalties. He's a right-handed centre, he can help us out." O'Brien netted his first career NHL goal on Wednesday.

Jim O'Brien potted his first career goal in Wednesday's win over Florida.

He posted three shots in a season-high 13:10 of ice time in the contest. O'Brien has skated in seven games with Ottawa this season and he isn't expected to have any fantasy value.

O'Brien has seven goals and 14 points in 27 AHL games this season. He hasn't played with Ottawa since the 2010-11 campaign, but that could change on Friday.

Jim O'Brien may have a very good chance to break camp with the Senators next season.

Ottawa GM Bryan Murray believes O'Brien has what it takes to be an NHLer. "I still think he’s got another step in him. I really think having the year he had down here will be a big benefit to him and with another good summer, he has a chance to be a real good role player, a determined, hard working kid who could be a match-up type centre or winger, used as a defensive type of guy who can also score some goals", said Murray. Despite the high praise, O'Brien doesn't figure to have any fantasy value going forward.

To update two earlier notes, Jim O'Brien and Andre Benoit have been returned to the minors by the Senators.

Jim O'Brien was returned to the minors on Sunday by Ottawa.

He suited up for the Senators in two games since his recall from the minors, but went pointless with six shots on goal over that span. His demotion may indicate that Jarkko Ruutu will return to the Senators' lineup after being a healthy scratch for the past two contests.

Jim O'Brien was called up from Binghamton of the AHL and played in Friday's loss to Columbus.

Although O'Brien has been a decent offensive player in the minors and the WHL, he skated on the Senators' fourth line alongside Jesse Winchester and Zack Smith and has little fantasy value at this time.
