Dimtri Patzold allowed five goals on 35 shots in Germany's 5-0 loss to Finland in Olympic action Friday night.
The 29-year-old former Shark draft pick will certainly give up the net to current Shark Tomas Greiss against Belarus on Saturday. Interesting that both German netminders were drafted by San Jose. We suspect there is a scout in the Shark system who is partial to German hockey. Sat, Feb 20, 2010 10:02:00 AM

Dimitri Patzold has been recalled from Worcester of the American Hockey League.

Patzold recorded a 2.94 GAA and a 4-4-1 record in 10 AHL games this season. Evgeni Nabokov has started in 53 of the Sharks' 54 games this season, so Patzold has no fantasy value.

Dimitri Patzold cleared waivers and was sent to AHL Worcester.

With Evgeni Nabokov starting in all of San Jose's first 41 games, Patzold is probably better off playing in the AHL.

Dimitri Patzold was placed on waivers by the Sharks on Monday.

If he clears he will report to the team's AHL affiliate in Worcester. Patzold saw a mere 44 minutes of action in the NHL this season over three contests, in which he allowed four goals. Evgeni Nabokov has been a workhorse for the Sharks this campaign, starting all of the team's 41 games. Thomas Griess will likely be called up to serve as Nabokov's backup.

Dimitri Patzold is back with the San Jose Sharks.

Patzold went to the minors last week and played in three games, winning one, losing one and tying one. Both he and Thomas Greiss will be up and down this season, getting playing time with Worcester and backing up Evgeni Nabokov in the NHL. They have no fantasy value while Nabokov is healthy.

Dimitri Patzold received his first taste of NHL action on Sunday night.

He replaced starting goaltender Evgeni Nabokov in the Sharks 6-2 loss to the Avalanche with about 11 minutes left in the contest. Patzold stopped both of the two shots he faced in the dying moments of the game. "It gives you an opportunity to put Patzold in an NHL game to see how much quicker it is," coach Ron Wilson said. "I probably should have done it earlier, but you hold on to the hope that you can bounce back."

Dimitri Patzold will serve as Evgeni Nabokov's backup goaltender this season.

Thomas Greiss was assigned to the AHL even though it is believed by many that he outperformed Patzold for the job. Assistant general manager Wayne Thomas echoed this sentiment by stating, "It's Dimitri's time and the decision also lets Thomas go and get more pro games."

Coach Ron Wilson says that he has not decided who will back up Evgeni Nabokov.

Wilson said that both Dimitri Patzold and Thomas Greiss may both back up Nabokov, who should play in 65-70 games. Wilson said that he may shuffle both goalies between the Sharks bench and starting for the AHL team in Worcester. Look for both netminders to play between seven and ten games in the NHL.

Dimitri Patzold is still in the race to back up Evgeni Nabokov in San Jose.

This is despite Patzold being on the losing end of a 6-5 shootout loss to Los Angeles while his competition Thomas Greiss shutout Anaheim. "We're not going to build our team based on two games," coach Ron Wilson said. Stay tuned to see who plays the 20 games that Nabokov does not.
