The Capitals like Justin Peters' upside, so they decided to sign him rather than seek a goaltender with a proven track record.
"He's still a young guy," GM Brian MacLellan said. "He's a good teammate, he gets along with the number one guys he's played with. So we thought it was a match that way. If you bring in an older, experienced guy, it's going to cost you more money, it was going to cost us more money, and it might have been a little more pressure on Holtby. We wanted to send a message to Holtby that he was our number one guy." It sounds like Peters will compete for the team's backup position with Philipp Grubauer at training camp. Jul 2 - 9:13 AM

The Washington Capitals have signed Justin Peters to a one-year contract.

Peters will get $1.9 million and will be in play for the starters job in Washington as he will battle Braden Holtby and Philipp Grubauer. Peters was 7-9-4 with a 2.50 GAA and a .919 save percentage with the Hurricanes in 2013-14.
Jul 1 - 12:34 PM

Justin Peters will represent Canada at the World Championships in May.

Toronto's James Reimer and Edmonton's Ben Scrivens are the other netminders on the roster. Peters posted a 7-9-4 record with a .919 save percentage and a 2.50 goals-against average in 21 appearances with the Hurricanes this year.

Apr 28 - 5:38 PM

Justin Peters has completed his AHL conditioning stint and returned to the Carolina Hurricanes.

The timing of this means that the Hurricanes don't have to use one of their four post-trade deadline recalls on Peters. It's also possible that the Hurricanes will trade Peters now that they've inked Anton Khudobin to a two-year, $4.5 million contract.
Mar 5 - 11:05 AM

Justin Peters has been sent to AHL Charlotte for a conditioning stint.

That will allow Peters to keep sharp over the Olympic break. He has a 2.50 GAA and .919 save percentage in 21 games with Carolina in 2013-14.

To say the least, it wasn't a positive return to the mix for Carolina Hurricanes goalie Justin Peters.

He was pulled after allowing three goals on seven shots in just 15:07 of game time. Anton Khudobin actually was credited with the loss, but this probably strengthened Carolina's commitment to Khudobin amid Cam Ward's injury concerns. Tampa Bay beat Carolina 5-3 on Sunday.
Jan 19 - 8:47 PM

Coach Kirk Muller wants to get Justin Peters into a game soon, but Anton Khudobin is projected to start Saturday night against Florida.

"We definitely want to get (Peters) in," Muller said. "Like I've said, we'll keep going game to game. This stretch from here to the Olympics is a whole different one from the previous one, where we've had space in there to use one goalie. We're definitely going to need two goalies down the stretch." A good time to get Peters into the crease could be Sunday's contest versus Tampa Bay.

Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford is open to trading one of the Hurricanes' goaltenders in an effort to clear the logjam.

The rise of Justin Peters has put Carolina in a position where they'll have three goalies that all deserve to be in the NHL once Anton Khudobin returns from his conditioning stint. However, it's rarely simple to trade a goaltender as it's rare for teams to both have the need for a netminder, an opening where acquiring one midseason wouldn't create a logjam, and the desire to resort to a trade to get one.

Justin Peters took the loss for the Hurricanes in a 4-3 loss to Pittsburgh on Friday night.

It was the third straight start for Peters, who stopped 22 of 26 shots in the defeat and has been given some run of late in place of Cam Ward. Peters' record falls to 7-9-4 with the defeat while GAA is 2.38 and his save percentage is .922.

Justin Peters will get the nod for Carolina on Friday.

It will be his third straight start and his fifth appearance in the Hurricanes' last six games. Peters has picked up just one victory in his past five outings (1-2-2), but he appears to have a leg up on Cam Ward right now.

Justin Peters was beaten with just over four minutes to go in the third as the Canes lost 4-3 to the Blue Jackets Monday night.

Peters made 20 saves on 23 shots and sees his record to 7-9-3. He has been a decent fantasy performer this season however with a .926 save percentage and 2.30 goals against average.

Justin Peters will play between the pipes on Monday.

Peters turned aside 47 shots on Saturday, but still ended up with a 3-2 overtime defeat. Hopefully his teammates can give him more support in this match against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Carolina coach Kirk Muller said that the Hurricanes would not have picked up a point on Saturday if not for the outstanding netminding of Justin Peters.

Peters stopped 47 shots in the 3-2 overtime loss to the Lightning. "Our goalie stole a point for us tonight," Muller said. "Obviously, he was the difference for us." Peters is now 7-8-3 with a 2.20 GAA and a .930 save percentage. His status on the Hurricanes may be in doubt however as Anton Khudobin is slated to return as the backup to Cam Ward. Stay tuned.

Justin Peters stood on his head for Carolina, but it wasn't enough in its 3-2 overtime loss to Tampa Bay on Saturday night.

Peters faced a whopping 50 shots (compared to only 27 on net for the Hurricanes) and made 47 saves, so this loss is certainly not hung on him. In fact, he's the reason Carolina even emerged with a point to begin with. He has a 2.20 goals-against average and .930 save percentage this season.
Sat, Dec 21, 2013 10:49:00 PM

Justin Peters kicked away 37 of 38 shots in Carolina's 3-1 win over Phoenix on Saturday night.

Despite three straight losses (two of which came in overtime) prior to this one, the Hurricanes have enjoyed a very good December, earning at least a point in six of eight games. Peters has a 2.23 goals-against average and .925 save percentage this season.
