The Calgary Flames have summoned Brett Carson.

Mark Giordano won't be available on Friday because his wife is having a baby, so the Flames needed another defenseman. "It’s obviously exciting," said Carson. "Hopefully, I get up here and get to play some minutes . . . and just prove to this team that they didn’t make a mistake in signing me. Obviously it’s a tough situation right now, but I’m going to come up here and do my best." Carson has 11 points and 16 penalty minutes in 26 AHL games this season.

Brett Carson (back) has been able to ditch his no-contact jersey and fully participate in the Flames' practices.

Carson will also travel with Calgary during their four-game road trip this week. "It’s exciting," he said. "Great to get the yellow jersey off, too, take some hits and see how it feels. Mentally, it’s a great boost, but I still have some work to do to get back in." It's worth noting that Calgary would need to make a move to activate him off the injured reserve list and he shouldn't be counted on to return this week. We'll keep you posted.

Brett Carson (back) has begun to participate in Calgary's practices while wearing a no-contact jersey.

"I’m feeling a lot better," Carson said. "I made a lot of progress during the last couple of weeks so it’s a matter of making sure it doesn’t flare up again." Carson tried practicing earlier this season only to tweak his back and be setback about three-to-four weeks. If everything goes well, Carson could return by mid-December. We'll keep you posted.

Brett Carson is slowly recovering from an off-season back injury.

He is stepping up his skating and workouts but there is no timetable for his return to action. We assume Carson is not the key to your fantasy team's success.

Brett Carson is getting closer to returning to action after injuring his back in the off-season.

Carson practiced on Thursday without a yellow jersey, allowing for contact for the first time this season. "We'll take it from there and see how he responds," head coach Brent Sutter said. "He was good enough to get to this stage today. Now, we'll see how he responds and how he can handle a full practice." Look for Carson to get into a game in the next week or two but he may need a conditioning stint in the minors beforehand. He has no fantasy value as he is their sixth or seventh defenseman at this time.
