Jonathan Ericsson suffered a fractured wrist Thursday night when he was hit into the boards by Washington's Nicklas Backstrom.

He is projected to be sidelined for six-to-eight weeks. "He doesn't get enough respect for what he brings to the table," coach Jeff Blashill said. "He is a big, physical defenseman that can play against the very best in the league. So when we lost him it was obviously a big loss, and it is going to be a big loss moving forward." Ericsson has nine points, 63 penalty minutes and a minus-2 rating in 51 contests this season, while averaging 19:13 of ice time per game.

Jonathan Ericsson picked up his first goal of the season during Sunday's 5-4 overtime loss to the Maple Leafs in the Centennial Classic.

It was the veteran defender who turned the tied on Toronto, kicking off a three-goal spree for Detroit spanning the final six minutes of play. He now has seven points in 34 games this season.

Jonathan Ericsson (back) feels good to play on Thursday.

At this point it's a question of whether or not the coaching staff agrees that Ericsson is ready to return to the lineup. If he does play it will likely be alongside Xavier Ouellet.

He took part in Tuesday morning's skate, but he won't play against Arizona. It will be the third game in a row he has missed due to back spasms.

Jonathan Ericsson's status for Sunday's game against the Flyers is unclear.

He missed Friday's game with back spasms and there is no word on whether he will play Sunday evening against Philadelphia. For now, play it safe and leave Ericsson on reserve. If we learn he will be in the lineup before the 5:00 pm EST puck drop, we will let you know.

Jonathan Ericsson earned praise from coach Jeff Blashill after a strong performance against San Jose on Saturday.

He wanted to be better this season after he struggled in 2015-16 and so far he has been. Ericsson has also contributed an assist in each of his last two games.

Jonathan Ericsson had a bruised face following Monday's 5-1 win over Ottawa.

He got hit in the face by a puck and he fought Senators defender Dion Phanuef. Ericsson required 20 stitches to his forehead from the puck. The fight was his second in three games this season to help him total up 24 minutes in the sin bin already.

Jonathan Ericsson has been dealing with a hip issue for years, but hopes to avoid surgery on it until his career is over.

"It’s going to have its ups and down, and it’s been the biggest issue for me the last few years," Ericsson said. "But the rehab is at least four months, so it’s nothing I want to do in the first place." Ericsson also battles arthritis in that area. He had 15 points and 56 penalty minutes in 71 games last season.

"We anticipate Ericsson playing, but we'll check it after today and see how he was," coach Jeff Blashill said. Ericsson told the team that he is ready to play, so we expect him to be in the lineup for Saturday's Stadium Series game in Denver.
