Detroit coach Mike Babcock wants Jonathan Ericsson (hip flexor) to play in one of the team's last two preseason games.

Jonathan Ericsson's finger still isn't 100 percent, but he expects to participate in training camp and be ready for the start of the season.

He had surgery to stabilize a fracture, which he suffered on Mar. 18, and reconnect a partially torn tendon in the middle finger of his left hand. Ericsson doesn't have full motion in his finger yet and he said he still has some discomfort. He missed the last 14 games of the regular season and the playoffs with the injury.
Sep 11 - 4:16 PM

it is unlikely that Jonathan Ericsson will be able to play in the first round of the playoffs.

He is still recovering from a broken finger and is aiming for the second round. The fact that the Red Wings are playing the President Trophy winning Bruins makes Ericsson's chances of playing in the post-season remote.

Jonathan Ericsson (finger) is slated to skate for the first time on Thursday.

However, it's unlikely that he'll be able to return during the first round of the playoffs. "It’s too early to tell," said Ericsson, who will have three pins removed from his finger next week. "The round could go on for about two weeks. It's not going to be the beginning of the round, I know that."

There was some initial hope that Ericsson would be able to return after just two weeks. Now Ericsson is done for the season and potentially part of the playoffs if Detroit makes it that far. He had 11 points and 34 penalty minutes in 48 games this season.

Ericsson is out for at least two weeks after sustaining the injury on Wednesday. The Detroit Red Wings have been decimated by injuries this season and there seems to be no end in sight to their bad luck. All things considered, it's remarkable that they're still in the fight for a playoff spot.
