Kris Russell (lower body) returned to action on Saturday.

Russell had an assist on Saturday, his ninth in 20 games as he returned from a two game absence. He is a four-five defenseman in deeper leagues so get him back in your lineup if you're playing that deep.
Nov 23 - 2:35 AM

Kris Russell (lower body) will be a game time decision on Saturday.

Russell certainly wants back in after missing two games with the injury but the team will decide before the game if he is healthy enough to go. "The other night he told me, ‘If you want me to play, I’ll play,’ " Flames coach Bob Hartley said Friday. "That’s who he is. There’s no way that we would (allow him to suit up). We’re not going to take any chances." He has eight assists in 19 games with a plus-five rating. If Russell is unable to go, then Raphael Diaz will draw into the lineup.

Nov 18 - 9:14 PM

Kris Russell is a top four defenseman this season after being an afterthought heading into training camp last season.

Russell came into last season as a blueliner just trying to make the Flames but he impressed enough that he averaged 23:08 minutes of ice time in 68 games. "I would say they have confidence in me," Russell said. "At this level, you’ve got to consistently play hard and get better every year. It doesn’t matter who you are, if you’re not helping the team and not an effective player, you’re not going to play. I want to keep working hard and keep getting better. I wanted to come in and not be that guy that just had a good season last year and floats into camp the next year. I was working hard all summer and wanted to set an example." Russell had 29 points in 2013-14 and should get around the same in 2014-15. Draft him accordingly.

Kris Russell is a vital piece to Calgary's defense, but it still seems odd he played 27:05 in Friday night's preseason game.

He even saw more ice time than starting goalie Karri Ramo (20:00). Be that as it may, Russell appears poised to log more heavy minutes in all situations this season as he saw 5:26 on the powerplay and 6:01 on the kill against Vancouver.

Since he did all the contact drills and everything, he felt great, he was skating good, I'm hoping that he's in the lineup [Tuesday]." He missed Saturday's match due to an upper-body injury.
