The Edmonton Oilers have a much better record with Kris Russell in the lineup than without him.
The Oilers are 9-3-1 this season with a healthy Russell and 2-5 when he was out with a lower body injury. He has three assists in 13 games with a plus-six rating so you shouldn't be jumping to put him in your fantasy lineup. Nov 23 - 10:33 AM

The news for Kris Russell's lower body injury has gotten worse.

The veteran defender is now considered "weeks away". Which will almost certainly keep him out through the month of November at the least. Russell has posted three points and 31 blocks over his first 11 games of the season.
Nov 12 - 6:22 PM

Kris Russell will miss Sunday's match with the Red Wings with a lower body injury.

With three points and 31 blocks over his first 11 games, Russell provides an unconventional form of production. Hopefully for those counting on his ability to soak up rubber he'll return soon.
Nov 6 - 3:35 PM

Kris Russell will miss Saturday's match with the Islanders with a lower body injury.

After picking up a trio of helpers in the first two games of the season, Russell hasn't seen the score sheet since. He does have 31 hits over 11 games however, so there's production to be had.
Nov 5 - 4:07 PM

Kris Russell will be paired with Andrej Sekera on the Edmonton blueline.

Russell was an unrestricted free agent who finally signed late Friday night. He will wear number four which was Taylor Hall's number. The defenseman should see power play time on the second unit as well as being on the second defensive pairing. A 25-30 point season is in the cards for Russell should he remain healthy.
Oct 9 - 7:37 AM

The Edmonton Oilers have signed defensemen Kris Russell to a one-year contract worth $3.1 million.

It's been a busy day for the Oilers, first trading Nail Yakupov to the Blues, and now adding a veteran presence to their lineup. Early reports indicate Russell will play on the third pairing, partnering Sekera and sending Mark Fayne to the press box. Russell does a bit of everything, he can play on the second powerplay unit and kill penalties effectively. This could shape into a nice low-risk signing for the Oilers.
Oct 7 - 11:54 PM

Kris Russell will reportedly sign a one-year contract worth approximately $3.1 million with the Edmonton Oilers, per Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman.

Russell's situation has been interesting to monitor. He became a free agent on July 1st. On the first day of free agency, it was reported that he was going to sign a long-term deal with Toronto, but that never materialized. The Oilers shed $2.5 million in salary earlier this evening when they traded Nail Yakupov to St. Louis. But the cap isn't an issue for them, as they have over $11 million in cap space before the Russell signing. No official announcement has been made at this time.
Oct 7 - 7:58 PM

Ottawa Senators GM Pierre Dorion has indicated that signing free agent defender Kris Russell is under consideration.

The 29-year-old defender is looking to cash in on his free agent, and somewhat lauded, shot-blocking status. Russell has blocked at least 201 shots each of the last four seasons while averaging over 23 minutes a night and 25 points a season. The Sens meanwhile have just over $6M in cap space, which could increase by another $4.65M depending on what happens with Clarke MacArthur.
Sep 25 - 4:37 PM

The Ottawa Senators have "more than a passing interest" in UFAs Kris Russell and Dennis Seidenberg, per the Ottawa Citizen.

It's surprising that Russell hasn't landed anywhere yet, but his search for a new team could end fairly soon. As for Seidenberg, he's currently playing at the World Cup for Team Europe and could sign with a new team at any point. It's believed that neither player is willing to accept a PTO.
Sep 24 - 10:20 AM

Kris Russell still doesn't have a team with training camps set to begin this week.

He has been attracting interest since he hit free agency in July, but he hasn't chosen a new address yet. Russell has been linked to the Edmonton Oilers recently on a possible one-year deal. Rumors have suggested that Calgary and Toronto have expressed interest as well.
Sep 19 - 4:55 PM

Kris Russell is playing the waiting game as an unrestricted free agent.

He is sitting tight while teams try to clear cash from their salary caps before he makes a decision on where to play. Russell is reportedly looking for a contract north of $4 million per season.
Aug 4 - 12:20 PM
