Kris Russell is second in the NHL in blocked shots as the league heads into the All-Star break.
Russell has 156 and while he has only three goals and 14 points this season, his fantasy value is higher if you play the blocked shots category. Russell had a career-high 34 points last season and will need an unbelievable second half to come even close to that. His name could be mentioned as the trade deadline approaches as the Flames need to do something to get back in the playoff race. Jan 30 - 7:02 AM

Kris Russell found the back of the net in Calgary's 4-2 loss to the New Jersey Devils Tuesday night.

Unfortunately Russell also had a minus-two rating, making his night a mixed bag for standard league owners. He now has three goals, 13 points, and a minus-five rating in 41 games this season.

The Flames have gotten calls on Kris Russell, according to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman.

Friedman cited one unnamed general manager as saying he’s been told the Flames want to try to re-sign Russell, who is a free agent this offseason. Russell is making $2.6 million this year. He has 12 points in 39 games, but teams are interested because of his shot-blocking (130).

Kris Russell scored a goal and an assist in Tuesday's 2-1 overtime win over Nashville.

Russell assisted on T.J. Brodie's game-tying goal in the second period and he eventually scored the overtime winner. Johnny Gaudreau and Dougie Hamilton picked up the assists on the overtime goal. Russell has four points in his last two games and two goals and 10 points this season.

Kris Russell (undisclosed) returned to action on Saturday.

Russell came back after missing three games and picked up two assists in the overtime win over the Rangers. He now has a goal and six points in 25 games so you likely had to be a seer to have him in your fantasy lineup.

Confirming an earlier item, Kris Russell was indeed scratched from Tuesday's match with San Jose.

The league's leading shot blocker (83) is listed as day-to-day, so don't expect him to miss too much time. Calgary will be home to Buffalo on Thursday and the NY Rangers on Saturday.

Kris Russell is not expected to play Tuesday night against San Jose.

Through 25 games this season, Russell has posted six points, 22 hits, and a league-leading 83 blocks. Mighty impressive.

Kris Russell (upper body) didn't take part in Monday's practice.

Russell missed Friday's contest due to the injury. He's expected to be re-evaluated on Tuesday, so we might know more soon.

Kris Russell has been listed as day-to-day with an upper body injury.

Russell leads the NHL once again with 86 blocks thus far, he also has 22 hits with six points through 25 games this season. Ladislav Smid is expected to take his place, he has 15 blocks and 13 hits in four games.

Kris Russell (upper body) is expected to play Tuesday.

He was hurt this past Friday when Calgary hosted Chicago and left the game after playing just 6:03 of ice time. The rugged defender leads the league with 72 blocks in 21 games this season.

Kris Russell suffered an upper body injury in Friday's game.

The good news is that the Flames only play one game until next Friday so they certainly can give the blueliner plenty of time to recover. Russell has only a goal and three assists in 21 games after a four goal and 34 point effort last season. Don't expect a lot offensively the rest of the way from Russell although he is a blocks machine after leading the NHL last season with 283 and leading again this year with 72.

Kris Russell had an assist in a 4-1 loss to Chicago on Sunday.

Russell has a goal and three points in 19 games this season. That puts him on pace to record just 12 points, which would be a steep decline from his 34-point showing last season. It wouldn't be shocking to see Russell bounce back, but Calgary as a whole is having a tough campaign and that's severely impacted his plus/minus rating. In terms of that minus-11 rating, Russell might continue to decline as the campaign goes on.

Flames blueliner Kris Russell leads the NHL in shifts per game and shots blocked

The former Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman leads the NHL with 35.4 shifts per game, slightly ahead of fellow teammate and blueliner Mark Giordano (33.3). Not only does he play a lot of minutes in the absence of T.J. Brodie from the lineup, but he also leads the league in shot blocks with 35. Given all the ice time and responsibility, Russell is yet to earn a point in 2015-16 with rumblings of Brodie coming back into the lineup shortly.

Kris Russell offered a blunt assessment of Calgary's 5-1 loss to Vancouver on Wednesday.

"They out-executed us, outworked us. Truthfully, they embarrassed us in our home-opener," said Russell. "We’ve gotta realize it was a bit of a joke the way we came out. If we want to be anywhere near the team we were last year, we can’t even be coming close to the effort we put in tonight. We were built on hard work. We were built on a committee effort." The Flames can take the loss as a wake-up call and perhaps bounce back. Calgary has a lot to prove, especially given that the Flames didn't look that great in terms of Corsi last season despite their record. That being said, this was just one loss and it's far too early to draw conclusions about Calgary.

The Calgary Flames and Kris Russell have started negotiating a new contract.

Russell is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent after this season if a new contract is not agreed to. Russell had four goals and 34 points last season and led the NHL in hits with 283. "I love playing here," Russell said. "From the owners on, it’s an incredible place to play and a real family. I think I found a place where I impact the team on a nightly basis, and, as a player, you want that. I was given every opportunity in my previous two places, but my game was still growing and evolving." Stay tuned.
