Kris Russell will be paired with Andrej Sekera on the Edmonton blueline.
Russell was an unrestricted free agent who finally signed late Friday night. He will wear number four which was Taylor Hall's number. The defenseman should see power play time on the second unit as well as being on the second defensive pairing. A 25-30 point season is in the cards for Russell should he remain healthy. The Edmonton Oilers have signed defensemen Kris Russell to a one-year contract worth $3.1 million.

It's been a busy day for the Oilers, first trading Nail Yakupov to the Blues, and now adding a veteran presence to their lineup. Early reports indicate Russell will play on the third pairing, partnering Sekera and sending Mark Fayne to the press box. Russell does a bit of everything, he can play on the second powerplay unit and kill penalties effectively. This could shape into a nice low-risk signing for the Oilers.

Kris Russell will reportedly sign a one-year contract worth approximately $3.1 million with the Edmonton Oilers, per Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman.

Russell's situation has been interesting to monitor. He became a free agent on July 1st. On the first day of free agency, it was reported that he was going to sign a long-term deal with Toronto, but that never materialized. The Oilers shed $2.5 million in salary earlier this evening when they traded Nail Yakupov to St. Louis. But the cap isn't an issue for them, as they have over $11 million in cap space before the Russell signing. No official announcement has been made at this time.

Ottawa Senators GM Pierre Dorion has indicated that signing free agent defender Kris Russell is under consideration.

The 29-year-old defender is looking to cash in on his free agent, and somewhat lauded, shot-blocking status. Russell has blocked at least 201 shots each of the last four seasons while averaging over 23 minutes a night and 25 points a season. The Sens meanwhile have just over $6M in cap space, which could increase by another $4.65M depending on what happens with Clarke MacArthur.

The Ottawa Senators have "more than a passing interest" in UFAs Kris Russell and Dennis Seidenberg, per the Ottawa Citizen.

It's surprising that Russell hasn't landed anywhere yet, but his search for a new team could end fairly soon. As for Seidenberg, he's currently playing at the World Cup for Team Europe and could sign with a new team at any point. It's believed that neither player is willing to accept a PTO.
Sep 24 - 10:20 AM

Kris Russell still doesn't have a team with training camps set to begin this week.

He has been attracting interest since he hit free agency in July, but he hasn't chosen a new address yet. Russell has been linked to the Edmonton Oilers recently on a possible one-year deal. Rumors have suggested that Calgary and Toronto have expressed interest as well.

The Boston Bruins reportedly have some interest in Kris Russell.

The Bruins are looking for defensive help and their options on the free agent market are thinning out. Alternatively, Boston might attempt to upgrade their defense via a trade. Russell has already reportedly declined an offer from Toronto worth roughly $17 million over four years.
Jul 4 - 4:30 AM

Kris Russell's agent, Allain Roy, set the record straight by tweeting that his client never turned down an offer from the Maple Leafs.

Several media outlets reported that Russell had signed with the Leafs on July 1st. Other reports had him turning down an offer from Toronto. "Reports of Kris Russell turning down any offer from the Maple Leafs are false. Simply rumors," Roy tweeted on Sunday afternoon.
Jul 3 - 6:59 PM

Kris Russell is among the best defensemen still available on the free agent market.

Multiple reports suggest that he has several suitors, but the interesting aspect of this will be contract terms. Jason Demers was considered a top free agent defenseman, and he got five years, $22.5 million from the Panthers. Russell is respected for his shot blocking, but the 29-year-old doesn’t offer much else. Justin Schultz and James Wisniewski are also available.
Jul 2 - 7:47 PM

Kris Russell may be a target of the Edmonton Oilers in free agency.

Edmonton is looking for defensemen and they have expressed a strong interest in Milan Lucic. Russell spent the 2015-16 season with Calgary and Dallas. He will become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.
Jun 28 - 3:43 PM

The Dallas Stars will not have to give the Calgary Flames a first round pick as part of the Kris Russell trade.

The package for Russell included a conditional second round pick that would have become a first rounder had Dallas won on Wednesday and advanced to the Western Conference Final. With the Stars' elimination, Russell has completed his two-year, $5.2 million contract.

The Stars will skate seven defensemen and 13 forwards during the pregame warm-ups and then make a decision. Russell missed Game 3 with an illness, but it's likely that he will return.
