The Calgary Flames and Kris Russell have started negotiating a new contract.
Russell is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent after this season if a new contract is not agreed to. Russell had four goals and 34 points last season and led the NHL in hits with 283. "I love playing here," Russell said. "From the owners on, it’s an incredible place to play and a real family. I think I found a place where I impact the team on a nightly basis, and, as a player, you want that. I was given every opportunity in my previous two places, but my game was still growing and evolving." Stay tuned. Oct 4 - 4:48 AM

Although the Flames suffered a 3-0 loss to the Anaheim Ducks in Game 2 on Sunday, they were encouraged by their play in the second and third periods.

Calgary managed to outshot Anaheim 21-14 in the final 40 minutes of the game. "It shows we can play with these guys, but now we need to do it for 60 minutes," said Kris Russell. "We can talk all we want about how we can compete with these guys, but we have to show that we can, and I thought we did there in the second and third. We have to build from that. It doesn't mean it's going to get easier. It doesn't mean we go home and we're just going to find our game. We have to earn everything against this team. We have to make sure we're prepared to do that in Game 3." Although Calgary outshot Anaheim over that span, the Ducks still outscored them in the final 40 minutes of the contest. Calgary has an uphill battle ahead of it.

The Calgary Flames will look to end their first round series at home on Saturday.

The Flames lead the Canucks 3-2 with Game 6 back in Calgary. "Talking with the guys, we’re all excited about the opportunity we have (Saturday)," said Flames alternate captain Kris Russell. "Obviously, it’s going to be a tough task. Winning the fourth game in any series is the toughest game to win. We know it’s going to be a challenge. We know they’re going to bring their best game. But we’re excited to play in front of our fans, excited for the opportunity.

Kris Russell scored his second goal in as many games, and now leads the team in scoring. However Calgary would go on to lose Game Two 4-1 to Vancouver, tying the season at one.

Jiri Hudler? Zero points. Johnny Gaudreau, Sean Monahan, Dennis Wideman? One point each. Russell is the only Flame with multiple points, let alone multiple goals. As brilliant as he was across 26:51 of ice time with two blocks in Game Two, this will not prove to be a recipe for sustained success for Calgary. Probably.
Apr 18 - 3:09 AM

David Jones scored the game tying goal before Russell's late goal iced it for the road. Russell racked up 29:07 of ice-time as well. Sam Bennett earned an assist on the game winning goal for Calgary and was a menace all night in his first playoff game.

Kris Russell has averaged 27:42 minutes of ice time per game since Flames captain Mark Giordano suffered a season-ending injury.

The Flames have done a great job of staying on course after losing Giordano and Russell has been a part of that. "Anytime you get an opportunity to get some more minutes, it's good. But, at the same time, it's responsibility, too," Russell said. "The more you play, you've gotta make sure that you're not taking shifts off. You've gotta be aware, and you've gotta be ready every shift, and I think we've done a good job as a D core with stepping up and trying to fill some of those minutes of Gio's." Russell has three goals and 28 points in 67 games in 2014-15.
