Darren Helm scored the game-winning goal in Saturday's game against the Rangers.
"Helmer had as good a game maybe as he's had this year," coach Mike Babcock said. "For a guy like Helmer, if he can continue and improve and get back to the level he was at, we're a better hockey team." The 27-year-old has five goals and 14 points in 27 games this season, including three goals in his last two games. "It's definitely been nice to be in the lineup every night and feel healthy," Helm said. "The extra points on the scoresheet are an added bonus, but I'm just happy to be healthy and playing." Darren Helm is playing alongside Pavel Datsyuk and Stephen Weiss.

He's played there for parts of the past two games and he's picked up three assists. Helm's versatility to play center or the wing is a valuable one for coach Mike Babcock to use depending on the matchup. Helm has 10 points in 22 games this year.

Darren Helm will draw in for the injured Pavel Datsyuk Tuesday night as Detroit takes on Columbus.

"He's been injured for so long, now he's trying to find his game," Babcock said of Helm who has just six points in 17 games this season. He'll center Daniel Cleary and Tomas Jurco on the third line while Riley Sheahan bumps up to second line center.

Darren Helm saw plenty of power-play time in Detroit's 2-1 victory over Boston on Thursday and he helped set up the winning goal.

Helm picked up an assist on Gustav Nyquist's winning marker, with the man advantage, at the 14:46 mark of the second period. Detroit needs someone to fill in while Pavel Datsyuk is injured and Daniel Alfredsson remains in limbo. Helm could be the right man for the job if he can continue to produce.

Darren Helm (groin) thinks he'll be ready to play in at least one of Detroit's final two preseason games.

"I feel really good," he said. "Today was a good step and tomorrow I want to get better." Helm suffered a broken nose earlier in the preseason, but he's been dealing with a back issue which has put pressure on his groin.

Darren Helm (broken nose) might be able to play on Wednesday.

"I was on the ice today and I was able to work out, do a few things during this time without being on the ice," Helm said on Monday. "I don't think I'll, it's not like I'll get back and be completely out. I'll take a couple days and I'll be back out." In addition to his broken nose, Helm has also be recovering from a groin injury. He had 12 goals and 20 points in 42 games in 2013-14.

Darren Helm (broken nose) has left the last two Red Wings' practices early.

Not surprising given that he sustained a broken nose this past week. Although the original prognosis for Helm was that he was not going to miss any regular season games as a result of the injury, if he doesn't start participating in full practices soon game action may be delayed.
Sep 27 - 8:53 AM

Darren Helm's broken nose isn't expected to keep him out for any regular season games.

Detroit doesn't open the 2014-15 campaign until Oct. 9 against Boston. Helm also required stitches on his left cheek after taking a stick to the face on Monday, but he was able to finish the game.
Sep 24 - 8:02 AM

Darren Helm suffered a broken nose during Monday's preseason contest.

Helm, and the Detroit Red Wings for that matter, just can't seem to catch a break. The preseason is barely begun and already Detroit's sickbay is filling up.

Darren Helm may be someone to watch over the next two weeks.

Helm, a center who will converting to wing this season, is going to get a shot playing alongside Pavel Datsyuk. For the speedy Helm, this is a tremendous opportunity. Of course, that is if he can stay healthy. Helm has been injured for large parts of the last few seasons. That said, Helm's wheels could open up the ice for the talented Datsyuk, something Detroit coach Mike Babcock has obviously thought about. Keep an eye on Helm. He could be a sleeper if he starts the season on the Wings' top line.
Sep 20 - 10:14 AM

Darren Helm (groin) skated briefly on Monday.

"He had a bit of a tender groin last week and at this time of the year we encourage guys to not push it," GM Ken Holland said. "We expect everything is good going forward." Helm was limited to 42 games last season due to injuries and he missed seven contests with a groin ailment.
Sep 15 - 4:59 PM

Darren Helm will begin this season on the wing, as an influx of healthy centermen and his suitable skillset have swayed Mike Babcock to try the gritty 27 year-old in a new position.

"I’m going to start like that," Babcock said of Helm, who at 511, 192 pounds can be a speedy, hungry force to become an effective winger. "I like the tenacity and pace and heaviness on the puck (Helm has)." As a third line center, Helm notched 20 points in 42 games last season. This year, he might get the chance to play with the Wings' star veterans such as Pavel Datsyuk as a result of the position switch. "He can help Pavel being able to play down low in the zone," Babcock said, which would be a big boost to Helm's fantasy value.
Sep 7 - 11:05 AM

A lawsuit against Darren Helm and Tomas Tatar has been resolved and dismissed, according to attorney Cheryl V. Jordan.

The Main Street Lofts Condominium Association filed a complaint in Oakland Circuit Court in March, which asked the Red Wings forwards to follow the noise rules or move out of the condominium. Neighbors complained about "loud music, yelling and banging on the floors and walls." Helm moved out before the complaint was issued and was letting Tatar, who reportedly left in April after Detroit was eliminated from the playoffs, stay there.
Jun 19 - 6:25 PM

Third-line center Darren Helm's speed could be a problem for the Bruins.

In fact, the Wings are a generally fast team from top to bottom which may pose some problems for a bigger but slower Bruins' squad. Helm is one of the fastest skaters in the NHL and he will lineup alongside veteran Daniel Alfredsson and Tomas Jurco on Detroit's third unit. If pitted against the Bruins' third line, Helm could make some noise this playoffs.
