Armed with a new contract, Darren Helm has gotten off to a hot start this season.
Helm inked a five-year, $19.25 million deal with Detroit over the summer. Since then he's scored four goals and five points in six games. "It’s nice to be able to do something with that contract to show that I deserved it," Helm said. He wasn't signed specifically for his offensive production, but it's been a nice bonus lately. That being said, it would be very surprising if Helm managed to stay hot for too much longer. Keep in mind he finished 2015-16 with 13 goals and 26 points in 77 contests. Oct 24 - 10:18 AM

Darren Helm netted a pair of goals in a 5-1 win against Ottawa on Monday night.

Helm is off to a great start this season with three goals and one assist over a three-game point streak. He produced just 26 points in 77 games last year and he has surpassed the 30-point mark twice in his career, so he is bound to slow down at some point.

Darren Helm was the only Red Wing to beat Roberto Luongo Saturday night in Detroit's 4-1 loss to Florida

Helm took a pass from Gustav Nyquist to net his first goal of the season. The Helm line, featuring Nyquist and Thomas Vanek, has been the Red Wings' only effectuve unit over Detroit's first two games, both losses in the state of Florida.
Oct 16 - 9:41 AM

Darren Helm is excited to open the season with Thomas Vanek on his line.

"Watching him in practice, he has an ability to score unlike almost anybody I've seen," Helm said Wednesday. "I'm definitely excited to play with him, and hopefully we can find some chemistry and use his talents and score some goals." He collected 13 goals and 13 assists in 77 games last season.
Oct 6 - 7:44 AM

Darren Helm was frustrated towards the end of the 2015-16 campaign due to what he felt was a lack of communication about his role.

Helm talked it over with coach Jeff Blashill and GM Ken Holland in June though. "Sometimes I just didn’t feel like the message was relayed to me clearly," Helm said. "I didn’t know if I was moving (lines) because I wasn’t playing well or doing things wrong or matchups. I had lots of talks with Kenny and lots of talks with Blash, and we just opened up a better line of communication between us (Helm and Blashill), and I feel confident things would be a little better between him and I, and we could make things work." Helm signed a five-year, $19.25 million contract with Detroit in July. He's being penciled in to serve as the third-line center.
Sep 14 - 9:11 AM

Darren Helm is being penciled in as the Red Wings' third-line center.

Riley Sheahan would shift to the wing as a result. Keep in mind that lines change all the time and preseason plans sometimes don't even last through October, so it's too early to say that this is a long-term change.
Sep 13 - 7:04 PM

The Detroit Red Wings have re-signed Darren Helm to a five-year, $19.25 million contract.

That's a lot of money for a bottom-six forward, but it might be less than what Helm could have gotten elsewhere. While he's not a significant contributor offensively, he's an asset defensively and in particular when it comes to killing penalties.
Jul 1 - 10:18 AM

The Dallas Stars are among the teams interested in Darren Helm, who is set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

Helm would bolster the Stars' third line and help them kill penalties. However, they might get priced out of the market for Helm as it's not out of the question that the versatile forward finds himself with an offer around or above $4 million annually.
Jul 1 - 8:57 AM

Detroit is still negotiating with Darren Helm on a new contract.

Helm is a pending unrestricted free agent, who is expected to field other offers on July 1. Red Wings GM Ken Holland expects to "reach out to them again this week" as the team would like to keep him because of his versatility.
Jun 20 - 8:53 AM

Darren Helm is likely to wait until after the free agent interview process before deciding on his future with Detroit.

As previously reported, Detroit has made Helm an offer. However, Helm is expected to attract a fair amount of interest on the open market, so it's not surprising to hear that he's waiting to evaluate his options. He had 13 goals and 26 points in 77 contests in 2015-16.
Jun 7 - 5:52 PM

The Detroit Red Wings have presented an offer to Darren Helm.

Helm is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1. Although Detroit clearly has some degree of interest in retaining his services, Helm would find a fair amount of demand for his services on the open market and that might incentivize him to become a UFA.
Jun 7 - 9:07 AM

Darren Helm might be tough for the Red Wings to re-sign.

Helm is eligible to become a UFA after completing his four-year, $8.5 million deal. The 29-year-old has some versatility given his ability to play a physical game, kill penalties, and chip in a bit offensively. There could be decent demand for him on the open market as a result and that might push him beyond what the Red Wings are looking to spend.
May 20 - 8:39 AM

Darren Helm can become an unrestricted free agent in July.

"I understand this is an important contract for him," GM Ken Holland said. "We're going to sit down. I've got an interest in Helmer coming back, but obviously it takes two to tango. Helmer and his agent will have to decide what their priorities are and now we wait." Money and his role with the team moving forward will be the biggest factors in getting a deal done.
Apr 29 - 8:10 AM

Darren Helm scored in Tuesday's 3-2 loss to Tampa Bay in Game 4.

He got Detroit on the board in the second period and Gustav Nyquist tied the game just before the end of the frame. It was Helm's first point of the series and he logged just 10:18 of ice time.
Apr 20 - 9:49 AM

Darren Helm scored the opening -- and what turned out to be the game-winning -- goal in the Detroit Red Wings' 3-0 shutout over the visiting Philadelphia Flyers Wednesday night.

Helm scored his 13th goal of the season unassisted at 7:57 of the first period. In the second period, Andreas Athanasiou made it 2-0 on a shorthanded goal that also was unassisted. Kyle Quincey scored his fourth goal late in the third period to cement the victory. Goaltender Jimmy Howard picked up the assist on Quincey's goal. The win was big for the Wings, who are looking to reach the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the 25th consecutive season. They are third in the Atlantic Division, two points in front of the fourth-place Boston Bruins and two points ahead of the Flyers, who hold the second wild-card spot from the Eastern Conference. The Flyers have a game in hand. The Wings can clinch a playoff berth with a win in Boston Thursday.
