Darren Helm might be tough for the Red Wings to re-sign.
Helm is eligible to become a UFA after completing his four-year, $8.5 million deal. The 29-year-old has some versatility given his ability to play a physical game, kill penalties, and chip in a bit offensively. There could be decent demand for him on the open market as a result and that might push him beyond what the Red Wings are looking to spend. May 20 - 8:39 AM

Darren Helm can become an unrestricted free agent in July.

"I understand this is an important contract for him," GM Ken Holland said. "We're going to sit down. I've got an interest in Helmer coming back, but obviously it takes two to tango. Helmer and his agent will have to decide what their priorities are and now we wait." Money and his role with the team moving forward will be the biggest factors in getting a deal done.
Apr 29 - 8:10 AM

Darren Helm scored in Tuesday's 3-2 loss to Tampa Bay in Game 4.

He got Detroit on the board in the second period and Gustav Nyquist tied the game just before the end of the frame. It was Helm's first point of the series and he logged just 10:18 of ice time.
Apr 20 - 9:49 AM

Darren Helm scored the opening -- and what turned out to be the game-winning -- goal in the Detroit Red Wings' 3-0 shutout over the visiting Philadelphia Flyers Wednesday night.

Helm scored his 13th goal of the season unassisted at 7:57 of the first period. In the second period, Andreas Athanasiou made it 2-0 on a shorthanded goal that also was unassisted. Kyle Quincey scored his fourth goal late in the third period to cement the victory. Goaltender Jimmy Howard picked up the assist on Quincey's goal. The win was big for the Wings, who are looking to reach the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the 25th consecutive season. They are third in the Atlantic Division, two points in front of the fourth-place Boston Bruins and two points ahead of the Flyers, who hold the second wild-card spot from the Eastern Conference. The Flyers have a game in hand. The Wings can clinch a playoff berth with a win in Boston Thursday.
Apr 6 - 11:24 PM

Darren Helm recorded his 12th goal of 2015-16 in Tuesday's 6-2 loss to Tampa Bay on Tuesday night.

He spent most of the game alongside Pavel Datsyuk and Anthony Mantha, who both picked up assists on the marker. Helm has contributed four goals and one assist in nine games this March.
Mar 23 - 9:56 AM

Darren Helm is expected to play on Tuesday, according to GM Ken Holland.

He missed Sunday's 1-0 loss to Toronto with the flu. Helm has 10 goals and 21 points in 64 games this season.
Mar 15 - 10:09 AM

Darren Helm will miss Sunday's match with Toronto due to the flu, and Tomas Jurco will take his place.

Helm was Saturday's hero with two goals and eight shots on net in the 3-2 overtime win over the Rangers. Which makes tonight's absence rather unfortunate. Jurco has six points and 46 hits in 41 games thus far, but if you're in a pinch, you might as well.
Mar 13 - 7:17 PM

Darren Helm led the Red Wings past the Rangers with a pair of goals, including the overtime winner Saturday.

Helm ripped a wrister and deflect one past Henrik Lundqvist during the 3-2 win, nearly single handedly winning the game stem to stern for the Red Wings. He now has 10 goals and 21 points on the season.

Darren Helm will play Saturday night against Colorado.

Helm missed a few practices due to an illness but he seems ready to go Saturday. Either Tomas Jurco or Teemu Pulkkinen will sit out to accomodate Helm's return.
Feb 27 - 10:08 AM

Darren Helm didn't skate on Wednesday because of an illness.

Consider him day-to-day for now. Detroit doesn't play until Saturday when the team will play in Denver in an outdoor Stadium Series contest.
Feb 24 - 5:44 PM

Darren Helm scored two goals during Sunday's 6-5 win over the Bruins.

Helm now has three goals over his last three games, bringing his season's total up to seven goals and 16 points. Not exactly what the Red Wings were hoping for out of the 29-year-old.
Feb 14 - 6:44 PM

Darren Helm potted his fifth goal of the year in Wednesday's 3-1 win over Ottawa.

He sealed the win with an empty-net marker late in the third period to snap a four-game point skid. Helm has contributed 14 points in 50 games.
Feb 11 - 8:05 AM

Darren Helm has been serving as the net-front presence on Detroit's power play.

"I love it," he said. "Nobody loves to be crosschecked and get hit in front of the net too often, but I love to be out there. OK, I don't love it, but love to be part of that power play and try to do some things to help." He hasn't earned any points on the power play this season, but that could change if his new role continues. Helm has four goals and nine assists in 46 games.
Feb 4 - 7:53 AM

Darren Helm snapped his personal 18 game goal drought during Saturday's 4-3 loss to Anaheim.

Now healthy for the second consecutive season, Helm was looking to build off his 15 goal and 33 point season from 2014-15. But with just four goals and 12 points in 44 games thus far, perhaps this is more akin to his actual production level at this stage of his career.
