Veteran Darren Helm had a goal and an assist in the Detroit Red Wings` 3-2 shootout victory over the Blackhawks in Chicago Wednesday night.

Helm`s goal, which gave the Wings a 2-1 lead at 17:54 of the third period, was his 13th of the season. His assist, on Tomas Tatar`s 24th goal of the season, was his 15th helper of the season. It gave the Wings a 1-0 lead at 16:10 of the second period. On a night where goalies dominated, Helm stood out, firing five shots on net and blocking six.

Darren Helm would like to reach a certain goal amount, but he's not saying what that is.

He has already tied a career high for goals in a season with 12 after 55 contests. "I set myself a goal and still have what, (27) games left?" Helm said. "I hope to get a few more than that. I just want to continue to play the way I have. The pucks have been going in." Helm isn't letting the scoring go to his head, though. He said, "when I start thinking I'm a skill guy and scoring goals, I don't play as well." Helm has 26 points on the year and his previous best is the 32 he scored 2010-11.

Helm scored a goal just two minutes into the second to give the Red Wings a 2-1 lead, and he also picked up the primary assist on Pavel Datsyuk's goal just 3:55 later. Unfortunately for the Wings, they allowed the Jets to get back in the game. Helm has 12 goals and 26 points in 54 games with Detroit this season.

Playing alongside Pavel Datsyuk and Tomas Tatar certainly has been a boon to Helm, as has his surprising health this season.

Darren Helm says he's "stronger, smarter" after dealing with injury-plagued seasons in his previous two years.

"It takes a lot more than just coming in and going on the ice. For me personally, I have to lot to do while preparing," he said. "I'm not going to get too excited if something doesn't feel right. I stay patient and do what I need to do to make sure I'm ready to play for that night and the next couple of games after that." Needless to say, Helm is glad he's been healthy in 2014-15 and he's happier that he's been contributing. He has registered seven goals and 18 points in 38 games this season.

Henrik Zetterberg scored the game-winning goal for the Wings, who are now 20-9-9. Zetterberg broke a 1-1 tie with 5:01 left when he tipped Niklas Kronwall's point shot out of midair in the bottom area of the left circle. It was Zetterberg's ninth goal; he leads the Red Wings with 33 points. Helm scored his second goal of the game, seventh of the season, 24 seconds later. He scored while fighting off the checking of Devils defenseman Eric Gelinas. Helm's first goal of the night was his first tally in 11 games and the 50th of his career.

Darren Helm scored the game-winning goal in Saturday's game against the Rangers.

"Helmer had as good a game maybe as he's had this year," coach Mike Babcock said. "For a guy like Helmer, if he can continue and improve and get back to the level he was at, we're a better hockey team." The 27-year-old has five goals and 14 points in 27 games this season, including three goals in his last two games. "It's definitely been nice to be in the lineup every night and feel healthy," Helm said. "The extra points on the scoresheet are an added bonus, but I'm just happy to be healthy and playing."

He's played there for parts of the past two games and he's picked up three assists. Helm's versatility to play center or the wing is a valuable one for coach Mike Babcock to use depending on the matchup. Helm has 10 points in 22 games this year.
