Darren Helm can become an unrestricted free agent after the 2015-16 season.
Detroit will probably be looking to re-sign him before that happens, though. Helm became a top-six forward for the Wings last season, while posting new career highs with 15 goals and 33 points in 75 games. He will earn a salary of $2.5 million this year on a deal that carries a $2.125 million cap hit. Aug 19 - 11:49 AM

Darren Helm scored the game-winning goal in the eighth round of the shootout against Minnesota on Saturday.

The goal needed to be confirmed by video review. "I just took it to my forehand and was able to get it up by the first pad enough," Helm said. "I wasn't positive it went in. I thought it might have because I knew I got it past that first pad. I heard the post but it didn't sound like a puck. I took a look up on the screen, and they showed the replay, I thought it went in. I was excited right away, but I wanted to make sure it was, in fact, a good goal."
