Darren Helm hasn't skated in two and a half weeks, but he's hoping that staying off the ice will help his ailing back finally get better.
"I feel pretty good and feel that I can go out onto the ice and get going," Helm said Wednesday. "But, we've proven three or four times already that that doesn't work. Just (taking) a different approach and hopefully this one works." He won't be back during Detroit's second-round series, but if the team advances further into the playoffs then he is hoping to be available. He isn't expected to need surgery despite all the setbacks he has suffered. May 22 - 5:56 PM

Darren Helm (back) skated for 10 minutes Monday and said he was "fatigued."

Helm has played in just one game this season due to the back injury and the postseason is no time to try to get your legs back. We don't expect Helm to play again this season.
Apr 30 - 9:50 AM

Detroit Red Wings coach Mike Babcock doesn't expect Darren Helm (back) to play again this season.

"He's not going to play hockey, right, this year, I don't think,'' Babcock said after Tuesday's practice. "We got to get ourselves in the playoffs and be ready to go without him." Helm has played just one game this season due to a torn ligament in his back. His recovery has been a constant stop-and-go process full of false starts and setbacks, but this seems to be the most definitive update we've gotten on his status this season.

Apr 9 - 4:46 PM

Darren Helm (back) is skating again.

"The last couple of weeks have been pretty positive," said Helm. "I've been skating quite a bit and working out and doing different things. I've been progressing, and it's not getting worse." Helm is hoping that he'll play again before the end of the 2013 campaign.
Apr 4 - 9:46 AM

Darren Helm (back) has stopped skating and the Red Wings don't know when he'll return to the lineup.

Helm has a torn ligament in his back near a disc but was thought to be a week or two away at the beginning of March. Unfortunately, he missed his target date of March 20 and has played in just one game this season. "I think everybody's frustrated, I think the doctors are frustrated, I think the training staff is frustrated and Helm is frustrated," GM Ken Holland said.
Apr 2 - 5:49 PM

Darren Helm (back) will not be in the Detroit lineup as hoped for on March 20th as he suffered a setback.

Helm has a torn ligament in his back near a disc and has played only once this season. "It didn't feel too good traveling (on the recent western Canadian trip) and sitting down a lot," said Helm, who has a torn ligament near his disc and has been limited to one game. "I don't know if that was the cause. We were pushing it pretty hard on the ice." Helm skated for 10 minutes in practice Monday before calling it a day. Consider him day-to-day for now.
Mar 19 - 8:19 AM

Darren Helm (back) is hoping to return on March 20.

Helm took part in Tuesday's practice. "There's still a few things I want to overcome as far as strengthening it and not feeling any pain after skating or the next day," Helm said. "It definitely did take a big step last week. I started skating Monday, just a few little whirls around the rink, nothing too hard, and I pushed it a little harder (later in the week). (Tuesday) was the first time I was with the team in five, six weeks and it was definitely nice to be out there and see the end (to the injury) coming close."
Mar 13 - 10:24 AM

Darren Helm (back) skated with the Detroit Red Wings for the first time Tuesday.

Helm had been skating on his own and is expect to return to the lineup in two to three weeks. Helm aggravated a back injury during his season debut on Jan. 25 and hasn't played since. He won't have much fantasy value but will be a boost to the Red Wings' bottom six.
Mar 12 - 6:35 PM

Look for Darren Helm (back) to return to action in two-three weeks.

Helm has played in only one game this season and the Red Wings miss his play as a bottom six forward. He is not worth a fantasy spot once he returns but the Red Wings will certainly be happy to see him back. He has been skating of late.
Mar 11 - 7:21 AM

Darren Helm (back) skated prior to Detroit's Friday practice.

Helm isn't likely to return to Detroit's lineup for at least a few more weeks. He's only played in one game this season.
Mar 8 - 4:50 PM

Darren Helm (back) hopes to resume skating this week.

He hasn't been seen on the ice since Jan. 26 and is still sidelined with a back injury that he suffered while doing squats before the start if training camp. Helm has played in just one game this season.
Mar 4 - 4:43 PM

Darren Helm has a torn disk in his back.

At least now Helm knows what he's dealing with. The injury comes with a six-to-eight week timetable and he's already spent five weeks on the sidelines. "I do feel better," Helm said. "That's the silver lining, I guess. It's just rest and slowly rehab and hope it gets better. It's definitely a lot better. Just daily stuff moving around the house and just getting down here, it feels better. Before, I wasn't able to do any exercises comfortably, and I'm starting to do that now."
Mar 2 - 8:15 PM

Detroit Red Wings GM Ken Holland says Darren Helm (back) simply needs "time" to recover.

Helm visited a specialist in New York on Monday but received the same diagnosis of rest and medication for the strained ligament in his back. Holland admitted that Helm is frustrated that the injury is not healing as quickly as hoped, but Holland noted the Red Wings will be conservative with the injury and called Helm's recovery a "slow process." It sounds like it could be quite a while before Helm is back on the ice and any owners that were holding out for a quicker return should move on now.
Feb 26 - 4:03 PM

Darren Helm will visit a back specialist in New York on Monday.

Helm has played in just one game this season while dealing with back issues and admitted recently that the lack of playing time is starting to bother him. There is still no timetable for Helm's return to the lineup, although doctors have ruled out disk or structural issues. Hopefully a visit to the specialist will provide some clarity.
Feb 25 - 11:19 AM

The lack of playing time is starting to get to Darren Helm (back).

Helm has played in just two games since March 17. One during the 2012 playoffs and another on Jan. 25. "Mentally, I've had a couple of bad days here and there," Helm said. "It's been a long time since I've played hockey or been healthy, and it's something I want to do and love to do, and when you don't have a chance to do that, it does get you down. But I'm surrounded by a lot of good people around the rink, I get a lot of support from family and friends, and the time will come when I'll be able to play and be healthy and I just have to look at that." The bad news is that there's no timetable for his return.
