Darren Helm (groin) skated briefly on Monday.
"He had a bit of a tender groin last week and at this time of the year we encourage guys to not push it," GM Ken Holland said. "We expect everything is good going forward." Helm was limited to 42 games last season due to injuries and he missed seven contests with a groin ailment. Sep 15 - 4:59 PM

Darren Helm will begin this season on the wing, as an influx of healthy centermen and his suitable skillset have swayed Mike Babcock to try the gritty 27 year-old in a new position.

"I’m going to start like that," Babcock said of Helm, who at 511, 192 pounds can be a speedy, hungry force to become an effective winger. "I like the tenacity and pace and heaviness on the puck (Helm has)." As a third line center, Helm notched 20 points in 42 games last season. This year, he might get the chance to play with the Wings' star veterans such as Pavel Datsyuk as a result of the position switch. "He can help Pavel being able to play down low in the zone," Babcock said, which would be a big boost to Helm's fantasy value.

A lawsuit against Darren Helm and Tomas Tatar has been resolved and dismissed, according to attorney Cheryl V. Jordan.

The Main Street Lofts Condominium Association filed a complaint in Oakland Circuit Court in March, which asked the Red Wings forwards to follow the noise rules or move out of the condominium. Neighbors complained about "loud music, yelling and banging on the floors and walls." Helm moved out before the complaint was issued and was letting Tatar, who reportedly left in April after Detroit was eliminated from the playoffs, stay there.

Third-line center Darren Helm's speed could be a problem for the Bruins.

In fact, the Wings are a generally fast team from top to bottom which may pose some problems for a bigger but slower Bruins' squad. Helm is one of the fastest skaters in the NHL and he will lineup alongside veteran Daniel Alfredsson and Tomas Jurco on Detroit's third unit. If pitted against the Bruins' third line, Helm could make some noise this playoffs.
Apr 18 - 10:14 AM

Darren Helm centered Daniel Alfredsson and Tomas Jurco in Tuesday's win over Buffalo.

Helm scored his 12th goal of the season in the contest and coach Mike Babcock was pleased with how the trio worked. He has 19 points in 39 games this season.
Apr 9 - 10:12 AM

Darren Helm scored a goal in the Red Wings' 3-2 win over Buffalo.

Helm has been plagued with injuries troubles over the last couple seasons, but he's making up for lost time now that he's healthy. He has four goals and six points in his last five contests, bringing him up to 18 points in 37 games this season.
Apr 5 - 9:46 AM

Darren Helm's hat trick powered the Red Wings over the Maple Leafs on Saturday night 4-2.

Helm's first-career three-goal game couldn't have come at a better time with Detroit fighting for a playoff spot. Helm scored twice in the second -- once shorthanded -- and another in the third to give him 10 goals on the year. Gustav Nyquist potted the other. Jakub Kindl assisted twice and finished a team-high plus-two on the night.

Darren Helm could get a look on the Red Wings' top line Saturday night against Toronto.

He actually skated a little on the first unit Thursday night when Detroit coach Mike Babcock demoted the slumping David Legwand. Playing between the white hot Gustav Nyquist and Johan Franzen will certainly be a boost to Helm's fantasy value. Keep an eye on this situation.
Mar 29 - 9:31 AM

Darren Helm (concussion) was back in the lineup on Saturday.

"I felt all right, we'll see how the body feels tomorrow," said Helm after the contest. "Everything, the speed, the positioning, the lungs as well, it's going to take a few games probably. I have to push myself each game and get better as time goes on. It's going to take a little while to get used to it again." He missed eight games with a concussion. Helm has been limited to 30 games this season due to injuries and he's produced 12 points.
Mar 23 - 7:33 AM

It will be a game-time decision as to whether Darren Helm plays Saturday afternoon against Minnesota.

He has been cleared to return after recovering from a concussion but Detroit coach Mike Babcock wants to see how Helm gets through the pre-game warmup before making any decisions about his availability for Saturday's matinee.
Mar 22 - 10:00 AM

Darren Helm (concussion) has been given the green light to return to the Red Wings' lineup.

"I'm excited to get back in, obviously," said Helm, who has missed 40 games this season. "I want to get back out there and get going with the team. A bunch of good skates, cleared by the doctor, did my concussion test, I guess you could call it, did well on that and I feel good and ready to go." That being said, Red Wings coach Mike Babcock was non-committal when asked if he would use Helm on Saturday. Detroit has won its last two games as the team tries to claw its way into the playoffs.
Mar 21 - 4:28 PM

Darren Helm (concussion) skated with the Red Wings on Tuesday.

Helm isn't expected to return in the near future though. He recently suffered a setback and is still experiencing headaches.
Mar 18 - 5:18 PM

Darren Helm (concussion) is still experiencing headaches.

He'll have to wait before his concussion symptoms subside before he can start preparing to return to the lineup. Helm has been an injury-plagued forward for the last three seasons.
Mar 18 - 9:20 AM

Darren Helm (concussion) didn't skate with the Red Wings on Saturday.

That probably means that he won't play on Tuesday as was previously hoped. The setback left Red Wings coach Mike Babcock uncertain of Helm's status. "I was told he'd be ready to go," Babcock said. "I don't know what's going on with him. There's no sense getting ready for the summer. We're playing now. We need guys back." Babcock added that Helm would have been back a week ago if it were up to him and admitted that that's why it isn't up to him. Given that rushing to return from a concussion is generally a very bad idea, yes, it is good that it's not up to Babcock.
Mar 16 - 9:45 AM

Darren Helm (concussion) was on the ice for Detroit's Friday morning skate.

Helm is hoping to rejoin the Red Wings' next week, but he knows concussions can be unpredictable and that very loose timetable might prove to be inaccurate. He has five goals and 12 points in 29 games this season.
