Toronto native Daniel Winnik has re-signed with the Maple Leafs for one-year, $2.25M.
That's a nice step up in pay from the one-year, $1.3M deal he signed with Toronto last summer. The Leafs sent Winnik to Pittsburgh in a deadline-deal for Zack Sill, a 2015 fourth round pick, and a 2016 second round pick. The latter was sent back to Pittsburgh in the Phil Kessel deal. Winnik had a career-season in 2014-15, tallying nine goals and 34 points. Jul 1 - 7:07 PM

Daniel Winnik is projected to begin the postseason alongside Sidney Crosby and Patric Hornqvist.

He produced two goals and nine points in 21 games with the Penguins after he was obtained from Toronto.
Apr 16 - 5:23 PM

Daniel Winnik has been skating alongside Sidney Crosby and David Perron.

He has produced a goal and an assist in his last two games. "I just have to play my game," Winnik said. "Quick on pucks and be strong on it down low, create space for them when I can. It's about winning one-on-one battles, especially board battles." He has five points in 12 games since joining the Penguins from Toronto.
Mar 26 - 4:58 PM

With 10 points, Daniel Winnik was the Toronto Maple Leafs' leading scorer of the Peter Horachek era in terms of five-on-five situations.

And yes, Toronto did trade Winnik to Pittsburgh on Feb. 25. That's how sad Horachek's 34-game stint with the Toronto Maple Leafs has been. With that in mind, it's really hard to properly judge any Maple Leafs player's potential fantasy value for the 2015-16 campaign based on what they've done in 2014-15. There will be roster changes, but Horachek will almost certainly be gone too and whoever replaces him will likely restore some degree of normalcy to the Maple Leafs' offense.
Mar 24 - 5:44 PM

Daniel Winnik was impressive in his first practice with the Penguins and will make his debut on Sunday.

Winnik will play alongside Steve Downie and Brandon Sutter. "It's only one practice," Sutter said. "But you can just kind of tell that Winnik's a smart guy, that he'll be able to adjust pretty quickly. Hopefully chemistry will come." Winnik was with Toronto this season and had seven goals and 25 points in 58 games. He is not worth picking up at this time in anything but the deepest of pools but he was a plus-15 with the lowly Leafs.
Mar 1 - 8:51 AM

Daniel Winnik's visa issues have been resolved and he is expected to practice with the Penguins on Saturday.

Winnik practiced on his own in Toronto while the visa issues were being worked on and he was set to drive to Pittsburgh later in the day. Winnik was dealt to the Penguins on Wednesday and is expected to be a third line winger. He can score the occasional goal and is an excellent penalty killer but do not expect a lot in fantasy stats from Winnik.
Feb 28 - 9:26 AM

Daniel Winnik has been dealt to Pittsburgh in exchange for Zach Sill, a second-round pick in 2016 and a fourth rounder in 2015.

Winnik has generated seven goals and 25 points in 58 contests for Toronto this season. He's great on the penalty kill and is eligible for unrestricted free agency at the end of the year. Toronto retained 50% of Winnik's salary in the deal.
Feb 25 - 3:56 PM

Daniel Winnik notched a goal for the Maple Leafs in their 2-1 shootout loss to the Canadiens on Saturday night.

Anything to improve that trade value. Winnik has been a solid addition to the Maple Leafs, with six goals and 23 points this season, but it’s unlikely he finishes the season in Toronto. Roman Polak and Richard Panik got the assists. David Clarkson played 2:31 and finished with 27 penalty minutes.
Feb 14 - 10:07 PM

Daniel Winnik produced a goal and added an assist in Toronto's 5-4 loss to the New York Rangers on Tuesday night.

The hard-working winger has collected five goals and 22 points in 53 games this season. Winnik will probably be on the move at the trade deadline because he's an unrestricted free agent in the summer and playoff teams could use his two-way abilities.
Feb 11 - 11:11 AM

The Maple Leafs have shuffled their forward lines for Saturday's game against the Flyers.

Daniel Winnik will play on the Buds' second unit alongside Nazem Kadri and Joffrey Lupul. Tyler Bozak, James van Riemsdyk and Phil Kessel will continue to skate as the squad's first unit. Leo Komarov, Peter Holland and Mike Santorelli will comprise the third line, while David Clarkson, Richard Panik and Trevor Smith will make up the fourth. This is a good opportunity for Winnik. We will be interested to see if he can get some traction in this slot.
Jan 31 - 12:22 PM

Daniel Winnik (head/neck) is expected to play on Wednesday night.

He said he didn't suffer a concussion after he fell awkwardly to the ice following a hit by Colorado's Jan Hejda. Winnik skated again in the morning after he got back on the ice on Monday.

Daniel Winnik doesn't have any concussion symptoms after he was hit by Jan Hejda and fell awkwardly on Thursday.

Winnik has been held out of the Maple Leafs' last two games, but he hopes to return to the lineup on Wednesday. He has a goal and seven points in 13 contests in 2014-15.

Daniel Winnik will miss at least a week of action with a neck/head injury.

The NHL and NHLPA have become very strict with players who suffer concussions. Winnik has to be symptom-free for a week before being allowed to return to action. The 29-year-old has seven points in 13 games this season. Winnik was carried off on a stretcher after being hit by Colorado defenseman Jan Hejda last week.

It should come as no surprise that Daniel Winnik will not play Saturday night against the Rangers.

He had a terrible spill Thursday night against the Avalanche and had to be removed from the ice by stretcher due to head/neck injuries. The good news is that Winnik's injuries do not look serious, although the Leafs are not saying if Winnik has sustained a concussion. Consider him day-to-day for now.

Daniel Winnik was moving around and talking by the first intermission after he suffered a head/neck injury early into the opening period.

He wasn't able to move for several seconds after falling awkwardly to the ice following a hit from Colorado defender Jan Hejda, but he escaped the incident without serious injury. In fact, Winnik may not miss any time at all. "The bad part of it is he was out of it and that left everybody gasping," coach Randy Carlyle said. "He did twist his neck, but the brunt of the weight of his body seemed to roll on his shoulder so he was lucky. He's 100 percent fine. He says nothing is bothering him." We'll put him on the sidelines for now.
