Derek Dorsett will not return to Vancouver's active roster due to health reasons and risks associated with playing, according to GM Jim Benning.
Dorsett has been advised by doctors to stop playing hockey after it was revealed that he has a cervical disc herniation adjacent and separate to his previous fusion. "I'm devastated by the news. It will take a long time for this to truly sink in," said Dorsett. "As hard as it was to hear, Dr. Watkins' diagnosis is definitive. There is no grey area, and it gives me clarity to move forward. I have a healthy young family and a long life of opportunities ahead of me. Hockey taught me a lot and it will help me be successful in whatever I choose to do in the future." We wish him the best in whatever he decides to do next. Nov 30 - 12:14 PM

Derek Dorsett has returned to Vancouver for further evaluation after he started to experience neck and back stiffness symptoms.

Dorsett had a cervical fusion procedure last year and he has progressed well from it, but the team is taking every precaution necessary to make sure Dorsett is fine. His status is unclear until he sees a specialist, but we know he won't play Tuesday night.
Nov 21 - 4:43 PM

Derek Dorsett scored on a shorthanded chance in the second period of Tuesday's 5-3 victory in Calgary.

Dorsett stays the team leader in goals with seven, one ahead of Bo Horvat and two in front of Brock Boeser and Thomas Vanek. Dorsett, usually known to fantasy owners for his frequent trips to the sin bin, has been a pleasant surprise for his offense, especially as a penalty killer. He has logged two shorthanded goals through 15 games.

Derek Dorsett scored his fifth of the season Saturday.

Dorsett has been a fantasy gem this season with five goals, six points and 42 penalty minutes in eight games. Now, we obviously do not think he will get 50 goals and 420-plus penalty minutes this season like he has been averaging but the comeback he has made from cervical fusion surgery less than a year ago has been amazing. Currently, he is a must-play.

Derek Dorsett scored two goals and an assist in Friday’s 4-2 win over Buffalo.

Dorsett picked up the primary assist on Markus Granlund’s first-period goal. He also added a shorthanded goal in the second period and an empty-netter in the third frame. The Canucks forward is off to a terrific start this season. Not only has he scored in back-to-back games, he’s also up to four goals and five points in seven games. Don’t be fooled by the hot start, he isn’t worth owning in standard fantasy leagues.

Derek Dorsett (neck) is skating and will be ready for training camp, according to agent Jason Davidson.

Dorsett underwent cervical fusion surgery back in early December due to disc degeneration in his neck. Davidson said that Dorsett hasn't experienced any issues. He contributed four points and 33 penalty minutes in 14 appearances with the Canucks last season.

Derek Dorsett, who will undergo cervical fusion surgery due to disc degeneration in his neck, has been dealing with this issue for five or six years.

So if you're looking for a silver lining, maybe Dorsett will be feeling better than he has in a long time should he make a full recovery as the Canucks expect him to do. That being said, it's not yet known how long it will take him to recover from this procedure. He's in the second season of a four-year, $10.6 million deal.

Derek Dorsett is scheduled to undergo cervical fusion surgery.

Dorsett has disc degeneration in his neck and this surgery will address that. It's expected that he'll be able to make a full recovery, but what's not clear is how long it will take him to get back to the point where he can play. Vancouver isn't providing a timetable, citing the nature of the procedure as the reason for that. "The decision to perform surgery was made after a thorough review of our options, including non-surgical treatment and rehabilitation," said Canucks GM Jim Benning. "Derek, our Canucks medical team and Dr. Watkins believe that surgery offers the best outcome both for his career and long-term health. Derek is an important member of our team and we are optimistic for a full recovery."

The Vancouver Canucks have place Derek Dorsett on the injured reserve list with a shoulder injury.

The move coincides with the recall of Joseph Labate from Unita. Dorsett did not play against Chicago Saturday and while many thought he was a healthy scratch, he was in fact injured. Dorsett has four points, 33 penalty minutes and 35 hits in 14 games this season.

The Canucks have scratched Derek Dorsett against Chicago on Saturday.

Tough to say one is surprised, given Dorsett is a rugged winger going up against a team that doesn't fight back in that manner. Besides, he could probably use a night off. Dorsett has 35 hits to go along with 33 PIMs and four points in 14 games this season.

Dorsett has a goal, four points, and 33 penalty minutes in 13 games this season. He finished last season with 16 points and 177 penalty minutes and it wouldn't be surprising to see him end up with similar numbers again in 2016-17.
