Derek Dorsett is questionable for Saturday's game with the Rangers as he missed practice on Friday for personal reasons.
Dorsett would be looking forward to this game as he played for the Rangers last season and was dealt to Vancouver in the off-season for a third round pick. Dorsett has 66 penalty minutes which is good for third in the NHL and he has four goals and 10 points to boot so he has some nice fantasy value in pools that use the penalty minutes category. Friday's contest in Columbus will be kind of like a home game for Derek Dorsett.

Dorsett was born in Saskatchewan, but he was drafted by the Blue Jackets and Columbus is still the city he goes to for the summer months. "I fell in love with the city," said Dorsett. "It's a big city, but it has a small-town feel. It's not like there is a big downtown where's it's rush hour all the time. It takes 20 minutes to get anywhere in the city from downtown. People are real nice and friendly, mid-western folks. It's got everything you need." Dorsett was traded to the Rangers in April 2013 as part of the Marian Gaborik deal.
Nov 28 - 11:14 AM

Derek Dorsett recorded two assists in a 4-1 win Sunday night.

Dorsett has two goals and eight points in 19 contests in 2014-15. That's impressive numbers for him given that he just got eight points in all of 2013-2014. He's a decent source of penalty minutes that can chip in offensively, but he shouldn't be counted on to maintain anything close to his current point-per-game pace.
Nov 24 - 9:20 AM

Derek Dorsett (upper body) returned to action on Friday.

Dorsett was his usual feisty self as he and the Coyotes B.J. Crombeen took roughing minors in the second period before going at it at the 19:23 mark of the third as both received fighting majors. Dorsett will get 10-15 points and be among the league leaders in penalty minutes this season so he is valuable in pools that use that category.
Nov 15 - 2:36 AM

Derek Dorsett should return to the fold on Friday night.

He has missed two games with an upper-body injury. Dorsett was hurt when he tried to throw a check on Los Angeles defenseman Brayden McNabb.
Nov 13 - 6:37 PM

Derek Dorsett notched the game-winning goal shorthanded Saturday night for the Canucks in their 3-2 triumph over the Oilers.

His goal came 4:05 into the third period, and he also had a helper. Dorsett will compile up the penalty minutes — he has 17 this year — but he is also a valuable player as a penalty killer and rugged fourth-liner. He has four points this season after getting just four last year. Luca Sbisa and Linden Vey picked up the other goals.
Nov 2 - 1:05 AM

Derek Dorsett has become a top-nine forward with Zack Kassian moving down to the fourth line.

This will give Dorsett an extra two or three minutes of ice time. He should be near or at the top of the leader board as far as penalty minutes are concerned and he could chip in with 20-25 points in a good year.
Oct 12 - 10:35 AM

The New York Rangers have sent Derek Dorsett to the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for a third-round pick.

Vancouver seems determined to completely remake their team by the end of the day. Dorsett is a noteworthy player in fantasy circles because he accumulates a ton of penalty minutes while still contributing a bit offensively. The golden example of that was in 2011-12 when he recorded 21 points and 235 PIM in 77 games. He has since been slowed down by injuries. This move isn't likely to change Dorsett's fantasy value much outside of the fact that he's a bit more likely to play regularly with a rebuilding Canucks squad as opposed to a contending Rangers team.
Jun 27 - 4:42 PM

As far as Derek Dorsett knows, he'll be in the lineup on Wednesday.

Dorsett only logged 5:41 minutes in the Rangers' 3-0 loss on Monday. He has an assist in 21 contests in the 2014 playoffs.
Jun 11 - 12:08 PM

The NHL has reportedly decided not to fine or suspend Derek Dorsett for headbutting Mike Weaver on Tuesday.

The Rangers aren't out of the woods yet though as John Moore still might end up getting suspended for his high hit on Montreal's Dale Weise. Dorsett has an assist in 17 playoff games this year.
May 28 - 4:52 PM

The NHL is reviewing Derek Dorsett headbutting Mike Weaver during Tuesday's game.

Dorsett might end up getting fined or suspended for his actions, but neither possibility is guaranteed. He has an assist and 19 penalty minutes in 17 postseason contests.
May 28 - 12:49 PM

Derek Dorsett recorded his first point of the postseason on Tuesday.

Dorsett has been averaging just 9:05 minutes in the playoffs. He's a physical forward with limited offensive capabilities, so his lack of playing time isn't surprising.
May 14 - 11:20 AM

Derek Dorsett saw the ice for only one shift in the second period and none in the third on Sunday.

Coach Alain Vigneault said that it was a coaching decision and not an injury that kept the tough Dorsett glued to the bench for most of the final two periods. It will be interesting to see if Dorsett is in the lineup for Game 7 on Tuesday or if Vigneault looks elsewhere as the coach may not want to tinker with a winning lineup.
May 12 - 10:14 AM

Derek Dorsett played on Friday after being a healthy scratch in Games 3 and 4.

Dorsett played 9:55 minutes and was a minus-one in a 5-1 win over the Penguins. It's doubtful that coach Alain Vigneault will want to tinker with a winning lineup so he could be back on the fourth unit Sunday night.
May 11 - 9:14 AM

Derek Dorsett will put his friendship with the Flyers Jakub Voracek on hold in the first round of the playoffs.

The two were close friends when both played for the Blue Jackets and Voracek will be an usher for Dorsett when he gets married on June 28 but all feelings will be put aside during the best-of-seven series. "Those are the guys you turned pro with," Dorsett said. "We've been through a lot together. As rookies, we were a part of the first year the Blue Jackets made the playoffs. There were some tough years after that, and all along it was a tight-knit group."
