Matt Hunwick has been placed on waivers.

Ryan Wilson (knee) is close to being able to return to the Avalanche lineup, but the team needed to make a move in preparation for activating him off of the injured reserve list. It looks like Hunwick is the odd man out. He comes with a $1.6 million annual cap hit in 2013-14 before becoming an unrestricted free agent.

Matt Hunwick cleared waivers Wednesday and remains a member of the Colorado Avalanche.

The Avs were hoping someone would take a flier on Hunwick so they could delve into the free-agent market. The 28-year old had six assists in 43 games last season. Barring a trade, he'll likely remain a depth defender for Colorado.

Colorado Avalanche place Matt Hunwick on waivers.

It will be interesting to see if any team puts in a claim on Hunwick. The 28-year-old defenseman had six assists and a plus-4 rating in 43 regular-season games this season. He's not much of a fantasy value, but Hunwick could be a solid depth defenseman for some team.

Matt Hunwick has agreed to join Team USA for the upcoming IIHF World Championships.

Hunwick has six assists and 14 penalty minutes in 42 games this season. This will be his first time participating in the adult tournament, but he did represent Team USA in the IIHF World Junior Championships before establishing himself in the NHL.

Matt Hunwick registered an assist in Tuesday's contest.

That gives Hunwick six points in 32 games this season. He's never been much of an offensive threat and consequently has no fantasy value in standard leagues.

Matt Hunwick will not be in the Colorado lineup Monday as he is out with a torso injury.

Hunwick will be replaced by Tyson Barrie on the Avs blueline. Hunwick has a string of zeroes on his stat sheet in seven games with the exception of a two minute minor and has no value in traditional fantasy pools while Barrie will play in only his fourth game of the young season. Consider Hunwick day-to-day.

The Colorado Avalanche have signed defenseman Matt Hunwick to a two-year/$3.2 million contract.

Hunwick has little fantasy value as he had three goals and six points in 33 games with a minus-three rating. He was a healthy scratch in 49 of Colorado's first 61 games before playing in the last 21 straight. Look for Hunwick to be a sixth defenseman in Colorado next season.

Matt Hunwick has now played in eight straight games after being a healthy scratch in 49 of the Avalanche's first 61 games.

Hunwick did not make waves when he was sitting in the press box and that impressed coach Joe Sacco. "He's forced my hand. He's been really good since he's been back in the lineup, and the one thing about Matt is he's a consummate professional," Sacco said. "He's the most fit guy, and he prepares himself. The reason he's able to come in and play the way he has after being in and out of the lineup, mostly out, is he doesn't wait for the opportunity to prepare. He's already prepared, so when the opportunity comes, he's ready to go. He's diligent, a very determined kid and a good pro." He has only two goals and three points in 20 games so he has little fantasy value.

Matt Hunwick was the only Colorado Avalanche to light the lamp on Saturday night in their 5-1 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The 26-year-old's goal was just his second of the year in 17 games, and he's now got three points. Paul Stasny and Gabriel Landeskog had the helpers on the goal. Erik Johnson was on the ice for a team-high four goals against to give him a negative-six for the season.
