Matt Hunwick (upper body) left the Leafs regular season opener after absorbing a hit by Ottawa's Chris Neil.

Neil caught Hunwick with a hard hit along the boards very shortly after Hunwick had released the puck for an outlet pass. There's no word as to extent of injury other than he would not return to the game.

Matt Hunwick scored his third goal of the pre-season on Sunday night, notching the overtime winner in Toronto's 3-2 win over Montreal.

The 31-year-old has more goals in the pre-season than he has had in the past four regular seasons. Based on the pre-season, the veteran should have a decent role on the Leafs' defense as a veteran to help guide young star Morgan Reilly.

Updating an earlier item, Matt Hunwick will have sports hernia surgery.

The procedure has a 10-week recovery period and he should be back skating in July. Hunwick suffered the injury back on Feb. 13 against Vancouver. He will miss the rest of the 2015-16 season.
