The St. John's IceCaps have been having some scoring issues early into the AHL campaign.

The Jets' top minor-league affiliate has been held without a goal four times in their past eight games. The team owns a 6-7 record on the year, but captain Jason Jaffray attributes the club's lackluster start to some bad luck. "A little bit of puck luck goes into that," he said. "We've run into some hot goalies, we've hit some posts and the knobs goalies sticks and things like that, but at the end of the day, you've got to create more (chances) and get into those dirty areas a bit more and get those ugly goals. The goalies are too good in this league now. If you don't get into those ugly areas, they're going to stop the puck, it's plain and simple." The IceCaps have scored a total of 27 goals, while giving up 39, so far. Their leading goal scorer is current Eric O'Dell, who has four tallies in 10 games.

Jason Jaffray is close to returning to action after he underwent spinal fusion neck surgery back on Apr. 18.

He received a check-from-behind from Norfolk Admirals defender Radko Gudas in a game in late March, but has been cleared for full contact by doctors. Jaffray is currently with the St. John's IceCaps on an AHL deal due to lockout. He isn't expected to participate in any of the team's three exhibition games this week against the Syracuse Crunch, but he is hopeful that he won't miss many regular-season contests.
