Right winger Teddy Purcell said he got "yelled at a lot" for not taking more shots with the Tampa Bay Lightning last season.
He recorded 156 shots in 80 games last season. In 400 career NHL games, he has taken 776 shots. His new teammate in Edmonton, Taylor Hall, has taken 797 shots in only 246 games. But Purcell said it's different with the Oilers than it was with Tampa Bay. "There are lots of guys here who can make plays, so I’ll shoot more," he said. Purcell will be either the second- or third-line right-winger, depending on where Nail Yakupov is slotted. "I spoke to Dallas (coach Eakins) the day I got traded, and from what he says, he’ll give me lots of opportunities," said Purcell, who was also on the power play in Tampa. Purcell had a breakout year in 2011-12 when he managed 24 goals and 65 points but slumped last season with only 12 goals and 42 points. Jul 27 - 10:10 AM

Teddy Purcell was caught off-guard by his trade to Edmonton on Sunday.

Purcell seemed to be established in Tampa Bay but obviously that was not the case. "It's a bit of a shock and the phone is blowing up, but other than that it's all good," Purcell said. "Steve (Yzerman) left me a voice mail to call him so I figured something was up. Any time you don't see something coming it's obviously a bit of a shock. Once it digests and sets in, I think it's going to be a good opportunity for me to play some good minutes with a lot of good young guys, so it's going to be exciting. I think it’s going to be exciting to play in a hockey crazy market and get a taste of what it’s like up there. I think it was good for me to start in places LA and Tampa Bay where the media wasn't so big and the (hockey) markets weren't so big. It allowed me to find my way and become an established player. Now I guess I’m going to see what I’m made of, if I can handle it all. It’s a true test of what kind of character you have."

Teddy Purcell is on his way to Edmonton in a trade for center Sam Gagner.

The Oilers have lots of strength down the middle on their top two lines with Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and the third overall pick Leon Draisaitl and needed help on the wing so Purcell is now an Oiler. He had a breakout year in 2011-12 when he managed 24 goals and 65 points but slumped last season with only 12 goals and 42 points so a change of scenery could do him a lot of good. Look for Purcell to be a top-six forward in Edmonton next season and get back to the 55-60 point range.
Jun 29 - 10:21 PM

Teddy Purcell scored Tampa Bay's lone goal in Game 2 late in the third period, as the Bolts were stymied by Carey Price and the Habs during a 4-1 loss.

Victor Hedman and Valtteri Filppula earned assists on Purcell's late goal, which came when the game was out of reach. The Lightning were a bit undisciplined, and made some crucial defensive zone gaffes in the loss, which puts them down 2-0 in the series with two games in Montreal coming up. Purcell has an impressive seven goals and 18 points through 20 career playoff games.

Apr 13 - 11:15 AM

Teddy Purcell did not play in Friday's 3-2 win over Columbus as he was battling a nasty case of the flu.

We do not know if Purcell will be recovered in time to play Sunday against the Capitals. For now, consider him day-to-day.
Apr 12 - 12:07 PM

Despite his two goals Thursday against the Senators, Teddy Purcell has not had a particularly good season.

He has scored only 12 goals despite having a tremendous wrist shot. Part of the problem is that Purcell doesn't shoot enough. He is averaging under two shots per game and needs to be more unselfish around the net. "He [Purcell] has such a great shot," linemate Valtteri Filppula said. "It's just that "sometimes," goalie Ben Bishop said, "you have to pound it into his head to use it." Teddy, listen to your teammates. Crank it up more often!
Mar 22 - 9:45 AM

Teddy Purcell recorded a pair of goals for the Lightning in Thursday's 5-4 defeat of Ottawa.

Purcell, known mostly for his playmaking skills, broke a 19-game goal slump with his markers in this game, his 11th and 12th of the season. Ryan Callahan, Valtteri Filppula and Eric Brewer also scored goals for Tampa Bay in the win.

Jan 23 - 10:46 AM

Teddy Purcell notched a goal and an assist in Tampa Bay's 6-3 win against Philadelphia

It was his first goal in his last 10 games. Purcell has been contributing assists over that span, but goals have been rare for him since he passes up opportunities frequently. He has 28 points in 45 matches. Valterri Filppula and Alex Killorn also had a goal and a helper in Saturday's win over the Flyers, while Matt Carle and B.J. Crombeen had two helpers apiece. Ryan Malone finished the contest with two goals.

Teddy Purcell contributed two assists in Tuesday's 4-2 victory over Winnipeg.

He has picked up at least one helper in each of his last five games to give him a total of 18 on the year. Purcell has 26 points in 43 matches.
Jan 8 - 9:35 AM

Teddy Purcell hasn't produced much offense since Oct. 17.

He has contributed just three goals and eight points in his last 23 games. Purcell recorded two of those goals and three of the points on Nov. 25 against the Rangers. He opened the 2013-14 campaign with four goals and four assists in his first six outings. "I just think he's in a situation right now where he's not seeing the puck much and then when he does get it, I think he's trying to do a little too much," coach Jon Cooper said. His ice time has dropped a bit in the past two games, but we wouldn't rush to drop him just yet.
