Shawn Matthias centered Daniel Sedin and Nicklas Jensen on the second line Saturday.
What's amazing is that Matthias was the fourth line center on Florida, the second worst team in the NHL while on a playoff contender, he is now seeing second line minutes. Matthias has two goals and five points in 12 games since his trade from Florida. He has little fantasy value at this time. Mar 30 - 8:14 AM

Shawn Matthias scored his first goal since his trade to the Canucks.

However, the Canucks' comeback effort against the Capitals fell short. Matthias had five shots on goal as well in 18:32 and continues to be an engaged Canuck, despite not getting the good fortune on the scoresheet.

Shawn Matthias will play an increased role in the Canucks' offense going forward now that Ryan Kesler has been ruled out for a couple weeks.

Matthias, acquired earlier this month in the Roberto Luongo deal, started off playing more of a checking role on the third line. But due to Kesler's injury, the Canucks will count on Matthias to spur some offense playing a top-six role with Chris Higgins and Jannick Hansen. This is a good a chance as any for Matthias to emerge on the fantasy radar this season.

Vancouver coach John Tortorella liked what he saw from newcomer Shawn Matthias in the team's embarrassing 6-1 loss to Dallas.

Acquired with Jacob Markstrom in the trade that sent goalie Roberto Luongo to the Florida Panthers on Tuesday, Matthias recorded seven shots and played 16:43 ice time. He saw some time on the wing and at center, while getting some work on the penalty kill. He also won nine of 14 draws. "I thought he played well," said Tortorella. "He was probably our best forward. He did some good things and wasn’t afraid to make a play and made some good plays. I'm really happy with his play."

The Florida Panthers have traded Shawn Matthias to Vancouver.

Matthias has nine goals and 16 points in 59 games in 2013-14. This move will not alter his status as a bottom-six forward.
Mar 4 - 5:13 PM

Shawn Matthias generated two goals and one assist in Sunday's 5-3 win over the New York Islanders to cap off a successful showing this past weekend.

He compiled three goals and five points in two games after producing just two goals in his previous 20 outings. Matthias was red hot for the Panthers last year during March as well, where he racked up 11 of his 14 goals. He has nine markers and 16 points in 59 games this season.

Shawn Matthias returned to action on Thursday January 30.

Jan 29 - 8:52 AM

There is a good chance that Shawn Matthias will draw back into the Panthers' lineup against the Devils Saturday.

He was a healthy scratch Thursday against Buffalo as Drew Shore took his spot. Panther coach Peter Horacek isn't down on Matthias. "I don't look at the [scratch] as being anything negative, just something you do,'" Horachek said. "Hopefully, it makes him a better player. It's not a negative. I didn't rip him. Sometimes players need to focus on what it takes to be a better player." It will be interesting to see how Matthias responds Saturday night against New Jersey should he get to play.
Jan 11 - 10:29 AM

Shawn Matthias was a healthy scratch Thursday night.

He has scored just four goals on the year and he has one marker in his last 21 outings. "He needs to stay focused and play with more detail. He seems to get distracted very easily; detail in his game isn't where it needs to be," interim coach Peter Horachek said. "He's got to get on the same page with everybody else."
Jan 10 - 8:13 AM

Shawn Matthias scored his fourth goal of the season in Florida’s 5-2 loss to Winnipeg Friday night.

Shawn Matthias has been skating on Florida's fourth line of late.

In 27 games this season, he has averaged 12:46 of ice time per contest, which is down from the 15:11 he received last year. "If I'm given two minutes or 22, I've got to be ready for that," said Matthias, who has five points. "All I can control is how hard I work." Interim coach Peter Horachek likes the energy that Matthias brings to the table and he has moved him up during some situations.
