It sounds like the addition of Mike Babcock made the Toronto Maple Leafs a more desirable team for Shawn Matthias.
"This is where I wanted to go, and he's a big part of that," Matthias told NHL.com "We had a good meeting. I got home and talked to my dad, and everything (with the Maple Leafs) seemed to be going in the right direction. I don't see why anyone would not want to play here. It's going to be amazing." Shawn Matthias wants to stay in Toronto longer than just one season.

Matthias inked a one-year contract with the Leafs earlier this off-season and it's no secret that he'd like to stay beyond the 2015-16 season. "Every day I’m a Leaf I’m going to be pumped up and do what I can for the Toronto Maple Leafs," he said in a recent phone interview. "Hopefully it’s for a lot longer than what I’m signed for, but that’s out of my control. I’ve got to prove to them that I belong here and show them that I really do care about being with this organization and how badly I want it. That’s my goal." The 27-year-old is from nearby Mississauga, Ontario.

Shawn Matthias is among three Maple Leafs additions included in Sportsnet.ca's 10 best analytics signings of the offseason.

With a weak free agent class and a salary cap that didn't rise much, teams have gotten great value on the free agent market. Matthias was signed to a one-year, $2.3 million contract. He's a versatile forward who can slot in at either center or wing and can play a two-way game. The 27-year-old had 18 goals and 27 points last season. Other Maple Leafs in this list were Daniel Winnik and P.A. Parenteau.

Shawn Matthias has inked a one-year, $2.3 million contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Matthias had 18 goals and 27 points in 78 games with Vancouver in 2014-15. He's a versatile forward in the sense that he can play up and middle or the wing, which will come in handy for the Maple Leafs as they might trade more of their veterans for prospects and picks after moving Phil Kessel.
Jul 6 - 10:27 AM

Look for Shawn Matthias to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

Matthias had an 18 goal season for the Canucks and while he gave them some nice secondary scoring, GM Jim Benning thinks that Matthias will see what free agency offers him. He should get more than the $1.85 he earned last season.
Jun 20 - 9:17 AM

Shawn Matthias scored a goal in Vancouver’s 4-2 loss to Calgary on Sunday.

Matthias’ goal at the 9:09 mark of the first period tied the game one. Unfortunately for the Canucks, the Flames answered with three unanswered goals. Radim Vrbata and Nick Bonino picked up the assists on the Matthias goal. The Canucks now find themselves down two games to one. Jannik Hansen also scored a goal for Vancouver. This series has been extremely physical and it was much of the same on Sunday night. There’s no reason to believe that these two teams will tone down the physicality throughout the series.
Apr 20 - 12:49 AM

Shawn Matthias (undisclosed) could return to action in time for Game 1.

Matthias missed the last two games of the regular season but according to the Vancouver Province, he sounded optimistic with regards to playing in Game 1. He finished the season with 18 goals and 27 points so he gives the Canucks some nice secondary scoring.
Apr 13 - 10:20 AM

Shawn Matthias is out Thursday due to an undisclosed injury.

Matthias will likely play Saturday in the season finale and if not he'll definitely be in Game 1. He's one of many players being rested Thursday as teams get ready for the playoffs. With Matthias out, Sven Baertschi will likely draw into the lineup.
Apr 9 - 2:29 PM

Shawn Matthias centered Chris Higgins and Linden Vey at practice.

Coach Willie Desjardins shuffled a couple of his lines on Saturday as Nick Bonino also switched and was between Derek Dorsett and Radim Vrbata. Look for the Canucks to take these lines into Sunday's game against St. Louis.
Mar 1 - 9:35 AM

Shawn Matthias recorded his first career hat trick to power the Canucks past the Bruins 5-2 on Friday night.

A tap-in, a dazzling display of patience, and a very fortunate bounce off him and in accounted for his trio of goals on the night. All very memorable to say the least. He now has 13 goals and 20 points this season.
Feb 14 - 1:54 AM

Vancouver center Shawn Matthias scored his 10th goal of the season in the Canucks' 5-3 loss to the Wild in Minnesota Monday night.

Shawn Matthias left Saturday's game in the second period after taking an elbow to the head, and did not return.

There are fears that Matthias may have suffered a concussion and that's a shame as he was playing the best hockey of his career. Coming into the game, Matthias had four goals and six points in his last five games. Stay tuned for an update.

Shawn Matthias has four goals and six points in his last five games.

That is a hot streak for anyone but for a bottom-six forward, that is white-hot. He only had five points in his first 21 games so if you put him in your lineup over the last two weeks then you deserve kudos.
