With 14 goals this season, Shawn Matthias has shattered his previous career-high.
That's pretty impressive given that this is obviously a shortened campaign. Matthias broke out in March, netting 11 goals in 16 games. Obviously that pace is unsustainable and once he cools down, he might not score another goal for what little is left of the 2013 campaign. Apr 1 - 8:43 AM

Shawn Matthias had two goals in Florida's 3-2 overtime win over the Devils on Saturday night.

Out of Matthias' 15 points, 12 of them are goals, though he's scoring at a 15-percent rate, which is sure to even out eventually. Dmitry Kulikov notched the game-winner for his first goal of the season. Jonathan Huberdeau chipped in with helpers on two of the goals. The rookie has an impressive 23 points on the year.

Shawn Matthias clicked on a line with Jonathan Huberdeau and Peter Mueller.

He replaced Drew Shore on the unit in the 5-4 win over Buffalo Thursday, and the line exploded with three goals and six points. Look for Matthias to line up again alongside Huberdeau and Mueller Saturday against the Devils. That makes him an interesting short-term play.
Mar 30 - 10:34 AM

Shawn Matthias scored two goals for the Panthers in a 5-4 shootout win over Buffalo Thursday.

Matthias has scored three goals in his last two games and is one of the few Panthers to avoid being dragged down by the undertow of the team's poor season. His 12 goals are a career high. Jonathan Huberdeau also registered a goal and an assist in the win while Tomas Fleischmann buried his eighth of the season.
Mar 28 - 10:49 PM

Shawn Matthias scored a goal for the seventh time in his past 14 games in Tuesday's loss to Toronto.

He has added two assists over that span as well, but has just three helpers on the year to go with his 10 goals. Matthias has already matched his career-high for goals in a season after 34 games.
Mar 27 - 10:10 AM

Shawn Matthias has faced some potential injury concerns, but he's remained in Florida's lineup.

He played last Tuesday despite suffering from with the flu earlier in the day and he suited up Sunday after getting hit up high from a shot by teammate Dmitry Kulikov on Saturday. Matthias' left eye was still partially shut Monday and he had a colorful shiner that required double-digit stitches around his eyebrow. "I don't want to miss any games," he said. "You take pride in playing through things." The Mississauga native will get to play in front of friends and family Tuesday night in Toronto, where he has enjoyed some success with six goals and two assists in his last 13 appearances. He has 12 points in 33 games this campaign.
Mar 26 - 8:47 AM

Shawn Matthias was able to play Tuesday night despite missing the morning skate with flu-like symptoms.

He scored his ninth goal of the year and registered five shots in Florida's 4-1 win over Carolina. Quinton Howden was brought up from the minors just in case Matthias was unable to play, but he ended up sitting as a healthy scratch.
Mar 20 - 10:19 AM

Shawn Matthias is sick and is unlikely to play Tuesday night.

The Panthers recalled Quinton Howden from their AHL affiliate in case Matthias is unable to play. Matthias has eight goals and 10 points on the season for the Panthers.
Mar 19 - 4:41 PM

Shawn Matthias scored the only Florida goal in a 4-1 loss to the Bruins Thursday night.

The shorthanded marker is the eighth of the campaign for Matthias, who also registered six shots on goal as the only bright spot on the night for the struggling Panthers.
Mar 14 - 9:43 PM

Shawn Matthias has scored four goals and added one assist in his past six games.

He has seven goals and two assists over 26 games, so his recent hot streak is commendable. However, the long-tenured Florida forward isn't happy with the way the Panthers have played this season. "I've been through this before," said Matthias. "I'm sick of losing and sick of being down. It's wearing on me. We need to turn this ship around. It's too frustrating and has gone on long enough ... especially after tasting the playoffs last year."
Mar 11 - 9:49 AM

Shawn Matthias scored a goal in Florida's 6-2 loss Saturday night.

Filip Kuba accounted for Florida's other goal. Jerred Smithson, George Parros, Marcel Goc, and Tyson Strachan each registered an assist for the Panthers.
Mar 2 - 9:48 PM

Shawn Matthias has two goals in his last three games, and his coach likes what he's seeing.

"He's keeping things simple,'' Florida coach Kevin Dineen said. "It's amazing when a guy just goes out and concentrates on the details of the game how other things follow.'' The 24-year-old may be on a decent run, but he's not worthy of a look in fantasy leagues.
Feb 18 - 9:41 AM

With Kris Versteeg out with injury, Shawn Matthias got to play on the first line Thursday.

The 24-year-old who was slotted with Stephen Weiss and Tomas Fleischmann played 17:11 and got one shot on goal. "I went out and just played hockey, didn't worry about anything else, controlled what I can and had fun,'' said Matthias, who also got some time on the power play. Matthias doesn't come too highly recommended just yet because he has never shown much in the way of scoring ability.
Feb 15 - 9:34 AM

Shawn Matthias skated on Florida's top line at practice Wednesday with Kris Versteeg sidelined with an upper-body injury.

He saw time on the first unit during several shifts of Tuesday night's game and played on the power play as well. Matthias had four shots and scored his second goal of the season against Washington.
Feb 13 - 3:44 PM

Shawn Matthias snapped a 31-game goal drought dating back to Feb. 15, 2012 when he scored in Florida's 4-3 win over Buffalo Sunday.

Yikes. Matthias has 19 shots in eight games this season, so he had been working hard to end his extended slump. However, he shouldn't be on your fantasy radar.
