The Avalanche desperately wanted to re-sign Shawn Matthias, who inked a deal with Winnipeg.
If that was the case it is hard to believe. Matthias actually ended up signing for $2.125 million, a lower AVV than he had last season. Instead the Avs put their money on former Calgary Flame Joe Colborne. We will see if that works out for them. Jul 2 - 12:08 PM

The Winnipeg Jets have inked Shawn Matthias to a two-year deal worth $4.25M.

The 28-year-old center is coming off five straight healthy seasons of double-digit goals and 20-plus points, including 12 goals and a new career high of 28 points last season with Toronto and Colorado. The quality depth winger however does not offer much fantasy value.

Shawn Matthias now has 10 points in 17 games with the Avalanche.

The 28-year-old collected his fifth goal and assist during Tuesday's 4-3 loss to Nashville. Matthias is no revelation for Colorado, but that kind of production can get a job on any team.

Shawn Matthias had the game-winning goal in Monday's 4-3 win over Nashville.

He gave the Avalanche a 4-1 lead in the third period and was credited with the winner after the Predators nearly came back to tie it. Matthias cashed in on a breakaway with 7:47 remaining. It was his 10th goal of the season and eighth point in 14 games with Colorado.

Shawn Matthias has three goals and four assists in 11 contests since joining the Colorado Avalanche.

The Avalanche acquired Matthias from Toronto on Feb. 21. At the time he had a modest six goals and 17 points in 51 games with the Maple Leafs. "It's been a great fit. I fit in well with the style of play and the guys," said Matthias. "It's been a good experience, a good opportunity, and this is a good team and I'm playing with two great hockey players." Matthias has been playing alongside Gabriel Landeskog and Carl Soderberg. If that line stays intact then it wouldn't be shocking for Matthias to stay strong for the remainder of the season.

Shawn Matthias found the back of the net in Wednesday's 3-0 win over Anaheim.

Matthias was acquired from the Maple Leafs prior to the trade deadline and he seems to have fit in well with his new team. The 28-year-old had five goals in 50 games with Toronto, but he's scored four times in eight games for Colorado.

Shawn Matthias hasn't joined the Avalanche yet because of work visa issues.

"I have to stay here a little while and work on my visa, until I can get back into the States," said Matthias, who was still in Toronto on Sunday. "I'm not too sure how it all works but they got some people working on it now, so hopefully I'll be taking off shortly and joining the team." It's unclear if he will be available to play Wednesday against the San Jose Sharks.

Feb 22 - 1:34 PM

The Colorado Avalanche acquired Shawn Matthias from the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for Colin Smith and a fourth round draft pick in 2016.

Matthias had six goals and 11 assists in 51 games in his first season with the Maple Leafs. The 28-year-old has shown that he can chip in offensively every once in a while, but he's better served as a bottom-six forward on a good team. The move to Colorado still won't make him relevant in standard fantasy leagues.
