There will be eight Detroit Red Wings playing in the World Cup tournament scheduled for mid-September.
Justin Abdelkader was added to the U.S. roster on Friday, while Pavel Datsyuk and Alexey Marchenko will pskate for Russia, Petr Mrazek will tend goal for the Czech Republic, Henrik Zetterberg and Niklas Kronwall will play for Sweden. In addition to a dislocated ring finger, Justin Abdelkader was dealing with a knee injury during the playoffs.

He suffered the finger injury at Minnesota on April 1 and it's expected to need 6-8 weeks for it to heal. Abdelkader also tweaked his knee against Boston on April 7, but he doesn't think it will require surgery. He believes he will be fine with some rest and rehab. It sounds like he will be OK for training camp.

The Red Wings had only one player dealing with an injury during the playoffs.

That was Justin Abdelkader, who was playing with a dislocated finger. The rugged winger sustained the injury in a late in the regular season. Needless to say, Abdelkader will be fully recovered by the time next season rolls around.

Justin Abdelkader didn't accept Brian Boyle's challenge to fight Sunday at the end of Game 3 because he didn't want to pick up another misconduct.

"I've got to be smart," Abdelkader said. "I don't want to take myself out of the series." He was given a misconduct penalty in Game 2 for fighting Mike Blunden and another one would have earned him a one-game suspension. He was also instrcuted by coach Jeff Blashill not to fight prior to Game 3. It's been a heated series against Tampa Bay and the Red Wings need Abdelkader in the lineup.

The Red Wings and Lightning played a physical contest at a high pace in their playoff opener. The two teams played against each other in Round 1 of the 2015 postseason and a new rivalry could be brewing. Abdelkader also scored a goal on four shots in the game.

Justin Abdelkader was one of the Red Wings' goal scorers during a 3-2 loss Wednesday night to the Lightning in the opener of the teams' first-round playoff series in Tampa Bay.

Abdelkader's goal gave the Wings a 2-1 lead at 4:07 of the second period. Mike Green tied the game at 2:11 of the second period. The Wings outshot Tampa Bay 36-34. Pavel Datsyuk of the Wings led both teams in shots, with seven.

Abdelkader ends the season with 42 points, just a tick down from his career best from last season at 44 points. The tally was his first in eight games though, so perhaps this is all he'll need to get going again.

Abdelkader assisted on Dylan Larkin's 20th goal of the season in the second period when the Wings were trailing 2-0. He then notched the winner with his 17th goal of the season, giving him 36 points in 67 contests.
