The Panthers did not like Justin Abdelkader's hit on Aleksander Barkov Monday night.

Barkov sustained an upper-body injury on the play, but Abdelkader defended the check afterward. "I'm the type of player that is going to go out and play hard," he said. "My job is to out there and finish checks. I don't think I'm a cheap player or trying to make cheap shots out there. I don't think I was coming in to hit with my elbows or my arms up. His head was a little low, I guess. At the same time, I thought I finished through his body."

Justin Abdelkader and Henrik Zetterberg will get Dylan Larkin back on their line Friday night.

The trio was very effective for the Red Wings earlier in the season and coach Jeff Blashill is hoping they can find that success again as the team is struggling to score. Abdelkader has one goal in his last eight outings.

Go find the highlight and watch the Magic Man work. Abdelkader now has 13 goals and 22 points in 41 games this season.

Due to injuries to Drew Miller and Teemu Pulkkinen the Red Wings have shuffled their forward lines and Justin Abdelkader is the big winner.

Detroit coach Jeff Blashill has re-united Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg on the same line. Abdelkader is the lucky third member of this unit for Saturday's contest against the Predators. The Wings' other two top lines will look like this: Dylan Larkin, Brad Richards and Darren Helm and Riley Sheahan, Tomas Tatar and Gustav Nyqvist. Adjust your roster accordingly.

Justin Abdelkader had two assists in a 3-2 victory over Los Angeles on Friday.

Abdelkader has only been held off the scoresheet once in his last four games. That's brought him up to five goals and 11 points in 20 contests this season. He's something of a borderline forward as far as standard fantasy leagues go, but he's not a bad guy to gamble on while he's hot.

The Detroit Red Wings offense has been in a funk as of late.

The Red Wings have scored two goals or less in six consecutive games and eight of their last nine after dropping a 3-1 decision to the Bruins on Saturday night. "We’re struggling a bit to score goals," Justin Abdelkader said ."When you do that, you can’t give up Grade A chances. When you’re struggling to score goals you have to play tight defensively. We gave them too many chances."

Justin Abdelkader scored a goal in a 3-1 loss to the Boston Bruins Saturday night.

Abdelkader inked a seven-year, $29.75 million extension on Thursday. This was his fifth marker of the season. Niklas Kronwall and Mike Green assisted on his goal

Red Wings GM Ken Holland offered his justification for handing Justin Abdelkader a seven-year, $29.75 million deal.

"It was to get him signed. He's 28 years of age and if he hit the open market, and a team wanted to pry him out of Detroit -- it's hard to find big people that can score 20 goals," Holland said. Except to say that Abdelkader has only reached the 20-goal mark once in his career. He got 23 markers last season, but before that he had never recorded more than 10 goals in a single season. Maybe he'll manage to reach the 20-goal mark again in 2015-16, but his new deal will run past his 36th birthday and we imagine that he won't be getting Detroit 20-goals per campaign for most of that contract.

Justin Abdelkader has signed a seven-year, $29.75 million extension with the Detroit Red Wings.

Abdelkader has one year remaining on his four-year, $7.2 million deal. That's a lot of money to throw at Abdelkader, especially seeing as he'll be 36 by the end of this new contract. From a fantasy perspective, Abdelkader does have some value in standard leagues, but he won't be a big contributor. He has seven points and 12 penalty minutes in 15 contests and that's likely a fair representation of the pace he's going to be on for the rest of the campaign.
