Justin Abdelkader had two assists in a 3-2 victory over Los Angeles on Friday.
Abdelkader has only been held off the scoresheet once in his last four games. That's brought him up to five goals and 11 points in 20 contests this season. He's something of a borderline forward as far as standard fantasy leagues go, but he's not a bad guy to gamble on while he's hot. Nov 21 - 10:58 AM

The Detroit Red Wings offense has been in a funk as of late.

The Red Wings have scored two goals or less in six consecutive games and eight of their last nine after dropping a 3-1 decision to the Bruins on Saturday night. "We’re struggling a bit to score goals," Justin Abdelkader said ."When you do that, you can’t give up Grade A chances. When you’re struggling to score goals you have to play tight defensively. We gave them too many chances."

Justin Abdelkader scored a goal in a 3-1 loss to the Boston Bruins Saturday night.

Abdelkader inked a seven-year, $29.75 million extension on Thursday. This was his fifth marker of the season. Niklas Kronwall and Mike Green assisted on his goal

Red Wings GM Ken Holland offered his justification for handing Justin Abdelkader a seven-year, $29.75 million deal.

"It was to get him signed. He's 28 years of age and if he hit the open market, and a team wanted to pry him out of Detroit -- it's hard to find big people that can score 20 goals," Holland said. Except to say that Abdelkader has only reached the 20-goal mark once in his career. He got 23 markers last season, but before that he had never recorded more than 10 goals in a single season. Maybe he'll manage to reach the 20-goal mark again in 2015-16, but his new deal will run past his 36th birthday and we imagine that he won't be getting Detroit 20-goals per campaign for most of that contract.
Nov 12 - 12:44 PM

Justin Abdelkader has signed a seven-year, $29.75 million extension with the Detroit Red Wings.

Abdelkader has one year remaining on his four-year, $7.2 million deal. That's a lot of money to throw at Abdelkader, especially seeing as he'll be 36 by the end of this new contract. From a fantasy perspective, Abdelkader does have some value in standard leagues, but he won't be a big contributor. He has seven points and 12 penalty minutes in 15 contests and that's likely a fair representation of the pace he's going to be on for the rest of the campaign.

Justin Abdelkader is close to inking a seven-year extension with Detroit

TSN's Bob McKenzie is reporting the contract will be for seven years worth a little more than $4 million per season. Abdelkader is playing the final year of a four-year contract that carries an AAV of $1.8 million.

Coach Jeff Blashill wants to see Justin Abdelkader get his "grinding" style back.

"When he's at his best, he's on the forecheck, winning puck battles, skating hard on the track and a great net front presence," said Blashill. "He's a grinding player who evolved into a grinder with real good skill. He has to make sure to keep that working, grinding mentality as he moves forward in his career." Abdelkader's spot on the top line was taken by Pavel Datsyuk during Monday's practice, but Datsyuk won't play Tuesday. That could move Abdelkader back up or he may stay on a trio with Andreas Athanasiou and Teemu Pulkkinen.
Nov 9 - 5:08 PM

Justin Abdelkader earned an assist on Dylan Larkin's game-winning goal Tuesday night against Tampa Bay.

The helper ended a nine-game scoring drought for the 28-year-old winger. Abdelkader has six points in 12 games, but five of those points came in the first two outings of the year.
Nov 4 - 10:23 AM

Justin Abdelkader hasn't registered a point in seven straight games.

"I have to be better," said Abdelkader, who had a great start to the season. "A lot of us offensively, the stats are not where we want them to be. We're not scoring enough goals, scoring chances are down, nobody is happy with their production." He generated four goals and five points in his first two games, but he hasn't earned a point since then.
Oct 30 - 8:16 AM

Justin Abdelkader is the NHL's first star of the week.

He won the first weekly honor of the season after he posted four goals and five points in two games. Abdelkader scored a hat trick in the first game of the year against Toronto and he the game-winning goal in both of Detroit's victories.
Oct 12 - 2:46 PM

Justin Abdelkader admitted that Friday's win over Toronto wasn't just another game.

This was Leafs head coach Mike Babcock's first regular season game in Detroit since he decided to leave the organization for Toronto. "Obviously, we just wanted to get that win," said Abdelkader, who scored a hat trick in the game. "Obviously, it meant a little more than playing the Anaheim Mighty Ducks. I’m not going to lie there."

Oct 9 - 10:31 PM

Justin Abdelkader wants to remain in Detroit beyond this season but he knows that things don't always turn out the way you expect.

Obviously you want to stay but you also know it’s a business," Abdelkader said. "You just don’t know (what’ll happen). I’m just going to focus on having another good year and we’ll see what happens." The 28-year-old had a career-high 23 goals and 44 points for the Wings last season.

Justin Abdelkader can become an unrestricted free agent next summer.

He is seeking a strong follow-up to his career year in 2014-15. Abdelkader had 23 goals, 44 points, 72 penalty minutes and 153 hits in 71 games. The 28-year-old intends to prove that he can contribute again as a top-six forward and there already appears to be mutual interest to get another contract worked out long before the start of free agency. It's being speculated that he could get paid somewhere in the $4.5-5 million range.
Aug 10 - 11:16 AM

Justin Abdelkader played the last few games of the regular season and the playoffs with a fractured right middle finger.

He sustained the injury by blocking a shot in an April 4th contest against Minnesota but didn't miss any game action despite being in some pain. Gotta love hockey players!
