Jeremy Smith remains in a battle with Jonas Gustavsson for the Bruins' backup goalie job behind starter Tuukka Rask.

Smith acquitted himself fairly well in Friday's 2-1 loss to Washington stopping 14 of 15 shots in the third period. He may have a slight lead in the race to be Rask's understudy as Gustavsson is on a professional tryout and would have to be added to the Boston roster.

Jeremy Smith may be the early favorite to become Boston's backup goalie to start the season.

He was great for Providence during his first year with the team in 2014-15. Smith does have some good AHL experience under his belt and the 26-year-old netminder may be hitting his stride at the right time for the Bruins. "Coming into camp, I think so," Smith said about the good chance he has of sticking with the big team. "But there are going to be five or six goalies in camp, so that's a lot of guys. But this is an opportunity. I think every year's an opportunity. But it's up to me. It's all performance-based." Malcolm Subban, Zane McIntyre and Jonas Gustavsson, who is on a PTO, are expected to be his main competition.

Jeremy Smith might get a shot at the backup gig during training camp.

Niklas Svedberg is heading to the KHL, which has created an opening in Boston. We'll still have to see what the Bruins do over the summer, but they might sign a veteran to a two-way deal with the intention of having him compete for the backup job during training camp. That would open the door for Smith or fellow AHL goalie Malcolm Subban to win the job. Smith turned 26 in April and hasn't played in the NHL yet, but he is coming off of a strong AHL campaign. He had a 2.05 GAA and .933 save percentage in 39 contests with the Providence Bruins.
