Jeremy Smith might get a shot at the backup gig during training camp.

Niklas Svedberg is heading to the KHL, which has created an opening in Boston. We'll still have to see what the Bruins do over the summer, but they might sign a veteran to a two-way deal with the intention of having him compete for the backup job during training camp. That would open the door for Smith or fellow AHL goalie Malcolm Subban to win the job. Smith turned 26 in April and hasn't played in the NHL yet, but he is coming off of a strong AHL campaign. He had a 2.05 GAA and .933 save percentage in 39 contests with the Providence Bruins.

The Bruins have inked goaltender Jeremy Smith to a one-year, two-way contract.

Smith, who was a member of the Blue Jacket organization and toiled for Springfield of the AHL last season, will earn $550,000 at the NHL level and $80,000 at Providence in 2014-15. Given the fact that he is 25 years old, had a 2.78 GAA and .898 save percentage in the minors last season and that the Bruins have a number of top goalie prospects, Smith has no fantasy value.
