Jack Hillen (upper body) will return to the Washington Capitals' lineup on Saturday.

Hillen was hurt during Washington's season opener and hasn't played since, making it hard for Capitals coach Adam Oates to assess how he might hold up Saturday. "He only played three minutes so it’s tough," Oates said. "He’s an NHL player, he’s a veteran. He’s coming off an injury; I’m sure he’s done it before. Obviously it’s a difficult situation today against the Bruins, but it’s part of the job." It wouldn't be surprising to see Hillen need a game or two to shake off the rust.

Hillen traveled with the Capitals to New York for Sunday's game against the Rangers but hasn't played since being hurt in the team's season opener on Jan. 19. If Hillen still hasn't been cleared for contact, it'll likely be another week at least before he's cleared to play.

Jack Hillen (upper body) skated alone for roughly 20 minutes prior to Washington's optional skate on Wednesday.

He suffered an apparent shoulder injury in the season opener against Tampa Bay and is currently on the team's injured reserve list. Coach Adam Oates noted his appearance on the ice as a bit of a surprise, so perhaps he'll be able to return sooner than expected. His status is listed as week-to-week.

The Washington Captials have signed Jack Hillen to a one-year, one-way contract worth $650,000.

In 55 games with the Nashville Predators in 2011-12, he posted six points and a plus-6 rating while averaging 14:03 of ice time per contest. Hillen also registered 42 hits and 65 blocks over that time. He should some depth to Washington's blueline, but shouldn't be expected to have any fantasy value next season.

Jack Hillen and Brian McGrattan were healthy scratches on Saturday.

It was the third time this season that Hillen was forced to watch a game from the press box as the Predators put Ryan Ellis in the lineup. Hillen last missed a game on October 20. He has very little fantasy value with only two goals and six points this season.

Jack Hillen has been utilized by Nashville on their second defense pairing alongside Kevin Klein since the end of November.

"He's a smart player, and he skates really well, so he gets open for you," Klein said. "He can make plays, and recently he has been jumping up in the play more and making things happen, which is nice." Hillen has seen his ice time increase over the past five games because of this. He has five points and a minus-1 rating in 25 games this season, so he doesn't have much in the way of fantasy value but he has been a pleasant surprise for the Predators.

The Islanders extended qualifying offers to a number of restricted free agents, but Jack Hillen has not yet received an offer.

Josh Bailey and Blake Comeau were among the players receiving offers in advance of Sunday's 5pm deadline and while there's still time for the team make an offer to Hillen that seems unlikely at this juncture. The offensive-minded defenseman could be an interesting risk/reward play for whichever team he catches on with.
