Chris Butler, one of the top four Calgary defensemen, has missed the past 13 games after suffering a deep cut to a thigh from a Miikka Kiprusoff skate blade on Feb. 23, but don't be surprised if he is in the lineup when the Flames meet the Avalanche in Colorado tonight.

"I felt for a while there it was like Groundhog Day, but (Sunday) I kind of got over the hump and started feeling good with my skating and felt like I’d be able to get back out there with the team again," said Butler. "It feels good. I haven’t really had setbacks in the last week. I’ve been skating, so it’s kind of to the point where it’s day to day. I’m just working on getting my legs underneath me, handling the puck well and getting comfortable to play." Butler made the trip to Colorado with the Flames, as did teammates Lance Bouma and Tim Jackman, who have been sidelined with upper-body injuries the past six and seven games, respectively.

Chris Butler knows his thigh laceration sustained on Tuesday could have been much worse.

Butler was cut by Miikka Kiprusoff’s skate blade. He needed 30 stitches to close the wound and is expected to need three weeks to recover. "It could have been worse," Butler said. "Very little muscle damage and nothing wrong with the tendon — I can still move my leg and things like that. Especially in that area — with muscles and tendons and ligaments all kind of being attached in that region — it was a little nerve-racking. But once the doctors kind of froze it up in there and got a chance to look at it and dig around and realize that everything structurally was pretty much all right, that was comforting."
