Antti Niemi and Kari Lehtonen might be the goaltending tandem for Stars going into the season.
Everything appears to be quiet on the trade front, according to Stars GM Jim Nill. That isn't a surprise at this time of the summer, but it could heat up before training camp or later in the season. Niemi and Lehtonen posted 25 wins apiece last season, but neither of them posted very strong numbers. Aug 13 - 2:38 PM

Dallas GM Jim Nill said that in addition to not buying out the contract of Kari Lehtonen, the team would also not buy out fellow goalie Antti Niemi.

Despite some inconsistent goaltending it seems that the Stars are content to start the season as the 2105-16 campaign ended--in a job share featuring Niemi and Lehtonen. In defending his position Nill had the following to say: "If you take the entire season, the results were very positive. They both won 25 games. Kari only lost 13 total games on the year. You can't just disregard that." Of course things can change but it looks as if there will not be a clear number one goalie in Dallas to start the season.
Jun 4 - 11:57 AM

Antti Niemi allowed three goals on 12 shots and was pulled in the Stars' 6-1 blowout loss to St. Louis in Game 3.

Niemi allowed three goals on 12 shots before being pulled at 2:34 of the second period. Kari Lehtonen, who started Games 1 and 2, made 23 saves on 26 shots in relief. Dallas is going to need much better goaltending from both of their netminders if they hope to advance past St. Louis. It wouldn't be surprising if the Stars went back to Lehtonen in Game 4.
May 4 - 1:55 AM

Confirming an earlier note, Antti Niemi will indeed be in net for Tuesday's Game 3 against the Blues.

Niemi has turned aside 66 of 74 shots through three games of action during the postseason, though the Stars have gone 1-2 over the span.
May 3 - 9:34 PM

Antti Niemi should still be considered the probable starter for Dallas on Tuesday night in Game 3.

Coach Lindy Ruff hinted that Kari Lehtonen would play, but he was still on the ice when the Stars bench boss was speaking to the media. That isn't typical for a starter, especially since Niemi was the first goalie off at the morning session. As we said in the latest news update for Lehtonen, we will have to see who leads the Stars out for warm-ups, but Niemi is the best bet.
May 3 - 2:19 PM

Antti Niemi is likely to get the nod in Game 3 versus St. Louis.

He was the first goalie off the ice at the morning skate, which indicates that he will play. Niemi played well in relief of Kari Lehtonen on Sunday and it was thought that he would get a chance to start in Game 3. He has one win along with a 2.73 GAA and an .892 save percentage in four postseason appearances.
May 3 - 1:38 PM

Dallas coach Lindy Ruff predictably won't say who is starting goaltender will be for Game 3 on Tuesday night.

Ruff was asked who would start on Monday and he responded: "Umm-hmm. I'll let you guys know [who it is] about five minutes after warmup tomorrow." Kari Lehtonen was pulled on Sunday and Antti Niemi stopped 19 of 20 shots in relief. If we had to guess then Niemi would probably be our pick to start on Tuesday.
May 2 - 4:54 PM

Antti Niemi stopped 19 of 20 shots in Dallas' 4-3 overtime loss to the St. Louis Blues in Game 2.

Niemi came into the game at the start of the second period after starter Kari Lehtonen got the hook. The Stars were trailing 3-1 when Niemi entered the game, but they managed to battle back in the third period to force OT. Unfortunately for Niemi, the Blues converted on their second power play attempt in overtime. The series will head to St. Louis tied 1-1. Don't be surprised if coach Lindy Ruff opts to start Antti Niemi on Tuesday night.
May 1 - 7:21 PM

Antti Niemi just couldn't hang with the Wild in Game 5.

Niemi turned away 19 of 24 shots through nearly 65 minutes of work. While it often seems inaccurate to lay the blame on the goalie, Niemi simply had to be better on Friday night. Fortunately, the Stars still lead the series 3-2.
Apr 23 - 1:23 AM

Antti Niemi will be in net in Game 5 against Minnesota on Friday night.

Niemi helped turn the tide for the Stars in Game 4, turning away 28 of 30 shots en route to a 3-1 series lead. All told between Kari Lehtonen and Niemi, only seven goals have been scored on the Stars through 102 combined shots. One should not expect things to differ terrible moving forward.
Apr 22 - 6:41 PM

Antti Niemi is projected to start on Friday.

Niemi kicked out 28 of 30 shots in a 3-2 victory Thursday, so it would make sense to go back to him in Game 5. He had a 2.67 GAA and .905 save percentage in 48 regular season contests.
Apr 22 - 12:32 PM

Making his 2016 playoff debut, Antti Niemi made 28 saves on 30 shots, helping the Stars to a 3-2 win in Game 4.

The Stars have kept their two goalie system going in the playoffs and even with Lehtonen getting three straight starts, Niemi was sharp when called upon. He improved his extensive playoff record to 35-26-2 to go with a 2.74 GAA and .907 save percentage in 62 starts.
Apr 21 - 1:38 AM

Confirming an earlier report, Antti Niemi will start in Game 4 against Minnesota.

He led the Stars out for the pregame warmup, so Game 4 will mark Niemi's 2015-16 postseason debut. He sports a 35-26 record, on a bloated 2.74 goals-against average and a .907 save percentage during his playoff career.
Apr 20 - 9:15 PM

Antti Niemi is likely to start Wednesday's match against Minnesota.

He was the first goalie off the ice at the morning skate, which indicates the Stars will start him instead of Kari Lehtonen. Lehtonen played well in the first two games of the Stars' Round 1 playoff series, but he allowed four goals on 24 shots in Monday's loss to the Wild.
Apr 20 - 3:18 PM

Antti Niemi isn't upset that Kari Lehtonen has started the first three games of Dallas' first-round series against Minnesota.

"I think no matter who plays, I'm happy if we go a long way and have a good run," said Niemi. "Whoever's playing in net, I hope's going to play well." Coach Lindy Ruff hasn't confirmed his starter for Game 4 yet, but Niemi could get a chance after Lehtonen surrendered four goals on 24 shots in Monday's loss.
