Antti Niemi made 17 saves in the Stars’ 4-0 preseason loss against the Blackhawks on Saturday night.
Earning the start, Niemi was pretty sharp, stopping 17 of 18 he faced in two periods. Kari Lehtonen gave up three goals on 11 shots in the third period. Both are expected to be involved in a timeshare of the net, at least early on. Oct 3 - 11:11 PM

We don't know if it means anything, but Antti Niemi will get the start in the Stars' preseason finale against Chicago.

Niemi is in a battle for Dallas' starting goalie gig with incumbent Kari Lehtonen but neither have pulled ahead during training camp. Perhaps if Niemi shows well against a tough Blackhawk squad he will get the call when the season opens for real on October 8th when the Stars face off against the Penguins.
Oct 3 - 1:50 PM

Antti Niemi allowed four goals on 28 shots in Tuesday's 4-1 loss to the Dallas Stars.

The Stars obviously didn't have their best offensive night but more concerning is the fact that Niemi's numbers weren't exactly stellar. The Stars have struggled with getting consistent performances from their goaltenders in the last few seasons so they went out and spent money to bring Niemi in this summer. With Kari Lehtonen already in Dallas, it will be interesting to see how the workload is split by head coach Lindy Ruff. The Stars host the Penguins in their regular season opener on October 8th.
Sep 29 - 11:28 PM

Antti Niemi made 16 saves on 19 shots in the Stars’ 6-3 win against the Lightning on Saturday night.

The Stars are employing the 1A-1B philosophy in net this season, so unless either Niemi or Kari Lehtonen really steals the show early on, they aren’t worth going crazy for in fantasy leagues. This is a very good team if their back end plays up to par.
Sep 26 - 11:20 PM

Antti Niemi is projected to split starts with Kari Lehtonen in Dallas this campaign.

However, that doesn't mean that they won't be given the opportunity to string together outings if either one of them gets hot. "Lindy and I have talked about it," said GM Jim Nill. "We think it's going to be a split job. Now someone might get it and run with it for a while. We'll play it by ear. There's always the unknown. There's injuries. So many things can happen. Somebody can get sick. You don't know what's going to happen." The Stars feel that the competition between the two will benefit the team and push their netminders to be better.
Aug 3 - 11:10 AM

Antti Niemi has signed a three-year contract with the Dallas Stars worth an average annual value of $4.5 million.

Niemi was acquired from the Sharks for a seventh-round draft pick. He posted a 31-23-7 record to go with a .914 save percentage and a 2.59 goals-against average in 61 games with San Jose last season. He is slated to share the crease with Kari Lehtonen in 2015-16.
Jun 29 - 2:27 PM

The Stars seem to be keen on signing newly-acquired UFA Antti Niemi to a contract for at least next season, if not beyond.

The Dallas braintrust are leaning towards having Niemi face off against incumbent starter Kari Lehtonen, who earns $5.9 million per season, for playing time. GM Jim Nill doesn't mind spending $10 million on his goalies because he believes the NHL is a two-goalie league now. "Kari's still an elite goalie. I really think it's becoming a two-goalie league now," Nill said. "Kari's the first one to admit he had a tough year last year. He's going to bounce back. He's been working on changing his conditioning over the summer, and competition’s healthy." It will be interesting to see how this plays out, but if Niemi signs with Dallas, both his and Lehtonen's fantasy values will take a hit.
Jun 27 - 2:50 PM

The San Jose Sharks sent Antti Niemi's negotiating rights to the Dallas Stars for pick 193.

San Jose gets something for a player who apparently was going to walk as a UFA. It's an interesting scenario for a Stars team that is in flux in net. As we've seen before, grabbing rights doesn't guarantee that Niemi will sign with Dallas.
Jun 27 - 10:33 AM

The San Jose Sharks have not closed the door on bringing back Antti Niemi for the 2015-16 season.

It was thought that Alex Stalock would take over the reins in San Jose but GM Doug Wilson says that the two sides have talked and the netminder still has a chance to return. He was 31-23-7 last season with a 2.59 GAA and a .914 save percentage and will be looking to start somewhere if the Sharks and his agent are unable to agree to a deal.
Jun 20 - 8:26 AM

Antti Niemi will probably be allowed to walk as an unrestricted free agent next month.

He played five seasons with the Sharks and his worst came in 2014-15. Niemi posted a 31-23-7 record to go with a .914 save percentage and a 2.59 goals-against average. San Jose is expected to look elsewhere for crease options and Niemi will probably be able to find a job on another team.
Jun 1 - 4:07 PM

The San Jose Sharks and pending UFA netminder Antti Niemi have had "no serious discussions" on a possible new contract.

Niemi, who is coming off a four-year pact that saw him ding the salary cap at $3.8M per season, has compiled a 190-100-40 record with a .916 save percentage 2.39 GAA over five seasons with the Sharks since being poached from the Chicago Blackhawks. Niemi will turn 32 years old in August.

Saturday's contest against the Los Angeles Kings could be the last time Antti Niemi is in a San Jose uniform.

Niemi is slated to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1 and it's becoming more unlikely that the Sharks will attempt to re-sign him. The netminder should get the start Saturday but it is not written in stone as of yet. Niemi enters the game with a 31-23-7 record to go with a 2.59 GAA and a .914 save percentage.
Apr 11 - 8:56 AM

Antti Niemi made 26 saves during Thursday's 3-1 win over the Oilers.

Outside of being beaten by Nail Yakupov off a sudden wrister from the slot, Niemi was on his game all night long. It's his second one-goal effort over his last three games. With the win, Niemi's record rises to 31-23-7 with a .914 save percentage and a 2.59 GAA.
Apr 10 - 1:30 AM

Antti Niemi will get the start in Thursday's game against the Edmonton Oilers.

Thursday's tilt has no bearing on the standings for either side, as both teams have been eliminated from post-season contention. Niemi has a 30-23-7 record with a 2.62 goals-against-average and a .914 save percentage this season.
Apr 9 - 6:19 PM

Antti Niemi made 29 saves in the Sharks’ 5-3 loss to the Coyotes on Saturday night.

Niemi is probably playing his last games as a member of the Sharks as he's a free agent this summer. He’s nothing more than an average NHL netminder at this stage of his career. Niemi has a 2.58 goals-against average and .914 save percentage this season.
