It's being speculated that Antti Niemi may be a buyout candidate after this season.
Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News believes the Stars have lost faith in Niemi. The improved play of Kari Lehtonen recently could keep him on the roster and it has resulted in Niemi spending most of his time on the bench. Mar 28 - 12:16 PM

Neither Antti Niemi nor Kari Lehtonen could stop the Oilers from scoring as the Stars were overrun by the Oilers 7-1 Tuesday night.

Niemi gave up five goals on just 20 shots. Lehtonen faced only nine shots and let two pucks get past so that the pair both fell below the .800 mark in terms of save percentages. Niemi ended at .750 and Lehtonen at .778. This was the league-leading 13th time this season that both goalies were needed to reach the end of a game.
Mar 14 - 11:57 PM

Antti Niemi appears to be starting Tuesday's game against Edmonton.

Niemi's last two appearances have come in relief after Kari Lehtonen was pulled. His last start was a 5-4 loss to the Islanders on Mar. 2. Niemi has an 11-10-4 record with a 3.23 goals-against average and an .895 save percentage this season.
Mar 14 - 2:31 PM

The Dallas Stars have had to use both of their goaltenders in a single game 12 times this season.

The Stars goaltenders are a combine $10.4 million in cap space and they've been a disaster. This season specifically Antti Niemi has a .895 save percentage while Kari Lehtonen isn't much better at .902. Combined they've given Dallas the worst save percentage in the league and have contributed to Dallas allowing 3.24 goals per game, which is the second highest in the league behind only the Colorado Avalanche. Both Niemi and Lehtonen are signed for one more season and it's hard to see Dallas going anywhere unless this goalie duo is finally ended.
Mar 13 - 9:56 AM

Antti Niemi came into Sunday night's game to relieve Kari Lehtonen and stopped 16 of 18 shots.

Niemi came in after San Jose had already scored the winning goal and thus had a no-decision. He is 11-10-4 this season with a 3.23 goals against average and .895 save percentage.

He has an 11-10-4 record with a 3.22 goals-against-average and a .897 save percentage this season.

It looks like Antti Niemi will get the nod on Thursday.

He has an 11-9-4 record with a 3.14 goals-against-average and a .900 save percentage. Don't be surprised if the Stars give him another start.

Feb 14 - 11:50 PM

Antti Niemi was pulled for a third straight game on Thursday night.

He was yanked after the first period when he permitted two goals on five shots. Niemi has allowed 11 goals on 36 shots in his past three starts. This could lead to more playing time for Kari Lehtonen, who was solid in relief in a 4-3 win over Buffalo on Thursday.
