Montreal has claimed Antti Niemi off waivers from Florida.
The Canadiens will be Niemi's third team this season after he was waived by Pittsburgh and Florida. He has a 0-4-0 record with a 6.74 goals-against average and an .822 save percentage in five appearances. Niemi didn't get any starts during his brief time with the Panthers. He will serve as insurance with Montreal because of injuries to Carey Price and Al Montoya. Nov 14 - 12:07 PM

Antti Niemi has been placed on waivers.

This is Niemi's second time on waivers this season after he was claimed by Florida from Pittsburgh on Oct. 24. He made two appearances with the Panthers, but didn't get any starts. Florida has Roberto Luongo back from injury, so there isn't a need to keep Niemi on the roster anymore.
Nov 13 - 1:07 PM

Antti Niemi spent Saturday's game in the press box.

The Panthers claimed Niemi off waivers because Roberto Luongo was injured, but now that Luongo and James Reimer are healthy, the Panthers have found themselves in a situation where they're carrying three goaltenders and Niemi is the odd-man out. Niemi has had a rough season with a 6.74 GAA and .822 save percentage in five games with the Panthers and Penguins. It wouldn't be surprising to see him placed on waivers again and this time he might clear.
Nov 12 - 6:46 AM

Antti Niemi has made back-to-back appearances for the Panthers in relief after starting goalie James Reimer was pulled.

Reimer got the hook Monday against Tampa Bay after he stopped 14 of 19 shots and he was yanked on Thursday versus Columbus after he surrendered four goals on 19 shots. Niemi hasn't fared much better during his brief time with Florida. He permitted two goals on 18 shots to the Lightning in 27:53 of ice time and he was beaten three times on 21 shots over 30:49 of action versus the Blue Jackets. Niemi took the loss in the Tampa Bay game.
Nov 3 - 9:54 AM

Florida has claimed Antti Niemi off waivers from Pittsburgh.

This move could mean the Panthers don't like the prognosis for Roberto Luongo's injured finger/hand. He is currently on injured reserve. Meanwhile, Niemi has had a brutal start to the year with a 0-3-0 record, a 7.50 goals-against average and a .797 save percentage.
Oct 24 - 12:18 PM

Antti Niemi has been placed on waivers by Pittsburgh.

Niemi has struggled mightily this season as the Penguins' backup goaltender, while posting a 0-3-0 record with a 7.50 goals-against average and a .797 save percentage.
Oct 23 - 12:13 PM

Antti Niemi allowed seven goals on 32 shots in Saturday's 7-1 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Three of the goals were scored while the Lightning were on the man-advantage. Niemi has only played in three games for the Pens this season, but they've been outings to forget. He now owns an 0-3-0 record with a 7.49 goals-against-average and a .798 save percentage. If starter Matt Murray ever suffers an injury, the Penguins would be in serious trouble. They have to address the backup goalie situation at some point soon.
Oct 21 - 10:05 PM

The Pittsburgh Penguins will start Antti Niemi against the Tampa Bay Lightning tonight.

Niemi's last start came against the Lightning and he gave up five goals on 34 shots in a 5-4 loss. If he continues to play poorly, it won't be long until he finds himself on waivers and in the AHL. He's 0-2-0 on the year with a 7.93 goals against average and a .809 save percentage.

Antti Neimi allowed five goals on 34 shots in Thursday's 5-4 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning.

This was Niemi's second appearance of the season, and neither one went particularly well. He hasn't been a reliable goaltender in a long time and that trend has continued into 2017-18. Niemi now owns an 0-2-0 record with a 7.93 goals-against-average and a .809 save percentage. If something happens to starting goaltender Matt Murray, the Penguins would be in some trouble. Niemi isn't worth owning as a handcuff to Murray.
Oct 12 - 10:44 PM

Antti Niemi will get the start in Thursday's game against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Niemi made a start earlier this season, but he was pulled after just 10 minutes in an ugly loss to Chicago. He's not a very steady fantasy option when he's between the pipes. Niemi has a 0-1-0 record with a 25.90 goals-against-average and a .692 save percentage. Those numbers will obviously get a lot better.
Oct 12 - 6:23 PM

Antti Niemi was pulled after allowing four goals on 13 shots in Thursday's embarrassing 10-1 loss to Chicago.

Niemi lasted less than 10 minutes in his first game as a member of the Penguins. Things didn't get any better when Matt Murray entered the game in relief of Niemi. Murray gave up six goals on 31 shots the rest of the way. It's been a while since Niemi has been a good NHL goaltender, and nothing he did tonight showed that he's capable of playing at this level. If things don't change, the Penguins may have to go out and trade for a backup goaltender. Niemi has no fantasy value.
Oct 5 - 11:43 PM

Pittsburgh Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan has confirmed that Antti Niemi will get his first career regular season start with the Penguins against the Blackhawks tonight.

The defending Stanley Cup Champions start their season with back-to-back games, and despite dropping last night's contest to the Blues in OT, Sullivan will elect to give Matt Murray a break and start Niemi. Niemi has a 8-10-1 record against his former club with a 2.85 goals against average and .910 save percentage. We wouldn't recommend going with Niemi tonight in your fantasy lineups.
Oct 5 - 6:45 PM

Tuesday's preseason contest was Antti Niemi's first with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Niemi turned aside 15 of 16 Sabres shots in the first period. "Well, he saw a lot of action early," Penguins coach Mike Sullivan said. "He made some big saves for us. I think sometimes as a goalie, coming to a new environment, maybe that’s a good thing. Because he really doesn’t have any opportunity to think about it much. He just has to go out there and trust his instincts and make the saves." Niemi is coming off a rough campaign with Dallas where he had a 3.30 GAA and .892 save percentage in 37 contests. He's expected to be Pittsburgh's backup goaltender behind Matt Murray.
Sep 20 - 5:26 AM

The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed goaltender Antti Niemi to a one-year/$700,000 contract.

The Penguins needed a backup goalie and we guess they got one although there were lots of better options in our opinion. Niemi was horrible in Dallas last season with a 12-12-4 mark to go with a 3.30 GAA and a .892 save percentage. Only take him in fantasy pools if he is a friend or relative. He probably won't play much behind Matt Murray.
Jul 1 - 12:45 PM

Antti Niemi has cleared waivers and the Stars have bought out the rest of his contract.

Niemi had one year remaining at $4.5 million. As previously reported, Dallas will be charged with an annual salary cap hit of $1.5 million for the next two seasons. Niemi had a 37-25-11 record with a 2.92 goals-against average, a .900 save percentage and three shutouts in two seasons with the Stars.
