Tuesday's preseason contest was Antti Niemi's first with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Niemi turned aside 15 of 16 Sabres shots in the first period. "Well, he saw a lot of action early," Penguins coach Mike Sullivan said. "He made some big saves for us. I think sometimes as a goalie, coming to a new environment, maybe that’s a good thing. Because he really doesn’t have any opportunity to think about it much. He just has to go out there and trust his instincts and make the saves." Niemi is coming off a rough campaign with Dallas where he had a 3.30 GAA and .892 save percentage in 37 contests. He's expected to be Pittsburgh's backup goaltender behind Matt Murray. Sep 20 - 5:26 AM

The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed goaltender Antti Niemi to a one-year/$700,000 contract.

The Penguins needed a backup goalie and we guess they got one although there were lots of better options in our opinion. Niemi was horrible in Dallas last season with a 12-12-4 mark to go with a 3.30 GAA and a .892 save percentage. Only take him in fantasy pools if he is a friend or relative. He probably won't play much behind Matt Murray.
Jul 1 - 12:45 PM

Antti Niemi has cleared waivers and the Stars have bought out the rest of his contract.

Niemi had one year remaining at $4.5 million. As previously reported, Dallas will be charged with an annual salary cap hit of $1.5 million for the next two seasons. Niemi had a 37-25-11 record with a 2.92 goals-against average, a .900 save percentage and three shutouts in two seasons with the Stars.

Antti Niemi will be bought out by the Dallas Stars.

Dallas will place him on waivers for a buyout. Niemi has one more year left on his current contract and the Stars will be charged with a $1.5 million cap hit for the next two seasons. He struggled during his time with Dallas and was never able to seize control of the starting role from Kari Lehtonen, who wasn't very good either. It was expected that Niemi would be bought out after the Stars added Ben Bishop in the off-season.
Jun 26 - 12:06 PM

Antti Niemi could be a buyout candidate for the Stars this off-season.

He has one season remaining on his contract at $4.5 million, which would mean a salary-cap hit of $1.5 million for two seasons. If the Stars can sign recently acquired netminder Ben Bishop then he will probably the one that the team protects in the expansion draft. If Dallas can't trade Niemi and the Golden Knights don't want him then a buyout seems likely.
May 10 - 1:03 PM

Antti Niemi was pulled from Thursday's loss to the Nashville Predators after giving up two goals on eight shots in the first period.

In Niemi's defense, Lehtonen didn't fair any better considering he gave up five goals on 26 shots to close out the game. The Stars' goaltending continues to be among the worst in the league. Niemi picked up a no-decision in the contest, but his goals-against went to 3.30 and his save percentage dropped to .892.
Apr 6 - 11:26 PM

Antti Niemi will probably start for Dallas on Thursday.

That's based on the fact that Niemi was the first goalie off the ice following the morning skate, which is usually a good indicator of who the starter will be. He has a 3.25 GAA and .893 save percentage in 36 games this season.
Apr 6 - 11:51 AM

Antti Niemi allowed two goals on 26 shots in Tuesday's 3-2 OT win over the Arizona Coyotes.

Dallas jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period, but Arizona was eventually able to tie the game and force overtime. In the extra frame, rookie Julius Honka scored the game-winner. This is Niemi's first win since Feb. 28. He has a 12-12-4 record with a 3.25 goals-against-average and a .893 save percentage.
Apr 4 - 11:40 PM

Antti Niemi is expected to start Tuesday's game against Arizona.

He is the likely starter after he left the ice first at the morning skate. Niemi hasn't posted a victory since Feb. 28 and this is shaping up to be just his fourth start since then.
Apr 4 - 11:50 AM

Antti Niemi allowed two goals on 24 shots in Thursday's 2-0 loss to the Boston Bruins.

Niemi stopped 18 of 19 shots at even-strength, but conceded a power play goal to Torey Krug as well. The Stars goalie hasn't won a game since Feb. 28 (three starts). He owns a 11-12-4 record with a 3.31 goals-against-average and a .892 save percentage in 2016-17.
Mar 30 - 10:19 PM

As expected, Antti Niemi gets the nod on Thursday against the Bruins.

Niemi has posted an 11-11-4 with a 3.35 GAA and an .892 save percentage this season in 34 games and 27 starts.
Mar 30 - 7:07 PM

Antti Niemi is expected to start in Thursday's match against Boston.

Through 34 games and 27 starts this season, Niemi has posted an 11-11-4 with a 3.35 GAA and an .892 save percentage. So you may wish to look for a more favorable matchup tonight.
Mar 30 - 6:20 PM

It's being speculated that Antti Niemi may be a buyout candidate after this season.

Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News believes the Stars have lost faith in Niemi. The improved play of Kari Lehtonen recently could keep him on the roster and it has resulted in Niemi spending most of his time on the bench.
Mar 28 - 12:16 PM

Neither Antti Niemi nor Kari Lehtonen could stop the Oilers from scoring as the Stars were overrun by the Oilers 7-1 Tuesday night.

Niemi gave up five goals on just 20 shots. Lehtonen faced only nine shots and let two pucks get past so that the pair both fell below the .800 mark in terms of save percentages. Niemi ended at .750 and Lehtonen at .778. This was the league-leading 13th time this season that both goalies were needed to reach the end of a game.
Mar 14 - 11:57 PM

Antti Niemi appears to be starting Tuesday's game against Edmonton.

Niemi's last two appearances have come in relief after Kari Lehtonen was pulled. His last start was a 5-4 loss to the Islanders on Mar. 2. Niemi has an 11-10-4 record with a 3.23 goals-against average and an .895 save percentage this season.
