Antti Niemi allowed five goals on 28 shots in San Jose's 5-4 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets.
The Sharks gave Niemi plenty of support tonight, but it just wasn't meant to be. With the game tied late in the third period, Mark Letestu beat Niemi in the final minute of play to give Columbus the win in regulation. Niemi falls to 3-2-0 on the season. He now has an unimpressive 3.16 goals-against-average and a .903 save percentage this season. Oct 24 - 2:03 AM

Antti Niemi had his share of difficulties Tuesday night as the Sharks were beaten by Boston by a score of 5-3.

Niemi allowed four goals on 32 shots in the defeat and potentially lost ground to Alex Stalock in the battle for playing time in the Sharks crease. With his first loss of the season, the San Jose netminder sees his record fall to 3-1-0, however given that the team blew a third period lead, he may find himself watching the next game from the bench. His GAA rises to 2.70 while his save percentage falls to .920.
Oct 21 - 10:43 PM

Antti Niemi will probably start against Boston on Tuesday.

Niemi has been great thus far with a 2.27 GAA and .933 save percentage in three games. That being said, Alex Stalock has been just as good, so Niemi's position as the team's starter is far from secure.
Oct 21 - 10:50 AM

Antti Niemi set aside 35 shots in the Sharks’ 4-2 win over New Jersey on Saturday night.

Niemi and the Sharks nearly saw their lead vanish as the Devils scored two in the third period to cut the lead to 3-2. Only an empty net goal after a fortuitous bounce off a Devils skate could seal the deal with 1:14 left. Niemi has a 2.27 goals-against average and .933 save percentage on the season. It wouldn’t be surprising to see the veteran get the night off Sunday at the Rangers.
Oct 18 - 10:10 PM

Antti Niemi allowed five goals on 34 shots Tuesday as the Sharks barely outpaced the Capitals in a 6-5 shootout victory.

After shutting out the Kings in his first game of the season, Niemi wasn't nearly as sharp in this contest, however working behind the powerful Sharks offense certainly helps. His record stands at 2-0-0 while he holds a 1.44 GAA and a .926 save percentage.
Oct 14 - 11:11 PM

Niemi was sharp in the Sharks opening night win at Los Angeles. He stopped all 34 shots he faced to secure his first win and first shutout of the season.

It was a perfect start to the season for Niemi and the Sharks as they partially avenged their playoff series loss to the Kings last spring.
Oct 9 - 1:27 AM

Antti Niemi will start for San Jose in its season opener on Wednesday.

That's not much of a surprise, but Niemi's position as the team's starter is less secure than it was last season. If he goes cold for any meaningful stretch of time, the Sharks likely won't hesitate to at least temporarily give the number one gig to Alex Stalock.
Oct 8 - 3:20 PM

Antti Niemi stopped 26-of-30 shots in the Sharks 4-1 preseason loss to the Kings on Tuesday night.

Niemi was unable exercise any demons against the Kings in this one as he let in a softie and was poor in playing the puck at times. Niemi did not help his cause to be the full-time starter this season and is in real danger to lose multiple starts to Alex Stalock this season. Make sure to handcuff your Niemi investment with Stalock if you haven't already.
Oct 1 - 1:23 AM

Antti Niemi played all 65 minutes of Friday night's game against Arizona, stopping 17 of 18 shots.

While he's playing with house money as the incumbant, his job is very much in question to begin the season. Head Coach Todd McLellan has made it known that the hot hand will play until noted otherwise. More starts like this however, will shape things in Niemi's favor.
Sep 27 - 2:00 AM

There's speculation that the San Jose Sharks will unload goaltender Antti Niemi.

Niemi’s inconsistent regular season carried over into the playoffs, and while there is a long list of San Jose players to blame for the so-called reverse sweep by the Kings, the performance in net from Niemi is near the top. Niemi finished with a 3-3 record in the seven-game, first-round series. He had a 3.74 goals-against average and .884 save percentage. He won a Stanley Cup with the Blackhawks in 2010, but his career playoff numbers (2.74 GAA, .907 SP in 62 games) are below average when compared to many top goaltenders. Niemi was pulled in Games 4 and 5 against the Kings, while Alex Stalock looked good in relief. He started Game 6. In his first full NHL season, Stalock was 12-5-2 with a 1.87 GAA and .932 SP in the regular season. He was solid in the playoffs. At 26, he could be the Sharks' goalie of the future, meaning Niemi could be out of San Jose pretty soon.
May 3 - 11:17 AM

Antti Niemi let in three goals on 28 shots in San Jose's 5-1 loss to Los Angeles in Game 7 of their first round playoff series on Wednesday night.

You can't blame Niemi for the loss, because the Kings scored some nice goals and two of those five goals were scored in an empty net. Niemi had a difficult postseason with a 3.74 goals-against average and .884 save percentage in six games. He played a solid regular season, but the Sharks needed more from him in the postseason.
May 1 - 3:53 AM

Antti Niemi is expected to start in Game 7 on Wednesday.

That's according to Joe Thornton. Niemi didn't start in Game 6, but his replacement, Alex Stalock, stopped just 26 of 30 shots in that contest. Niemi has an ugly 3.90 GAA and .882 save percentage in five games in the playoffs.
Apr 30 - 1:57 PM

The biggest question going into Wednesday night's trio of Game 7's is who will get the start in the Sharks' goal, as both Antti Niemi and Alex Stalock have struggled through Games 4, 5 and 6.

Niemi won a Stanley Cup in 2010 with the Blackhawks, has 35 career playoff victories and a 1-1 record in Game 7's. Stalock, of course, started his first career NHL playoff game on Monday and allowed four goals on 30 shots, although stopped all 26 shots he faced relieving Niemi in Games 4 and 5 combined.
Apr 29 - 9:56 PM

Antti Niemi was pulled in Game 5 against the Kings, the second straight time he's been yanked in the first-round series.

Niemi gave up three goals on 19 shots, getting pulled 22 seconds into the second period. He allowed five goals in a Game 4 loss, lasting just over two periods then. Niemi entered the game with a 3.45 goals-against average and .889 save percentage. Alex Stalock came in to relieve him.
Apr 27 - 12:24 AM

Antti Niemi isn't overly concerned after being pulled from Game 4 on Thursday.

Niemi allowed five goals on 26 shots in San Jose's 6-3 loss to the Kings. "I thought five goals is way, way too much, but overall I thought I felt good," Niemi said. "I saw the puck well. I'm not too worried about that." San Jose won the first three games of the series, so Los Angeles is still against the ropes.
