Anssi Salmela did not get a qualifying offer from the New Jersey Devils on Monday.

New Jersey didn't want to deal with the possibility of Salmela taking them to arbitration if they qualified him. He will be allowed to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1, but GM Lou Lamoriello said he will, "continue to talk to him" and he could be back with the team next year. Salmela had eight points and a minus-11 rating in 48 games with the Devils during the 2010-11 campaign. He returned to their lineup after off-season surgery to repair a torn meniscus and a torn ACL in his right knee.

Anssi Salmela scored the winning goal in overtime to lift the New Jersey Devils to a 3-2 win over the New York Islanders on Saturday night.

Not a bad time at all for Salmela to score his first goal of the season. The Devils have been absolutely incredible in the second-half of the season. They are 22-3-2 in their last 27 games and moved within six points of the eighth and final playoff spot with 14 games left in the season. David Clarkson and Jacob Josefson had a goal and an assist each for the Devils.

That means he can remain with New Jersey for up to 10 games played or 30 days and go down to the minors without having to clear waivers again. Salmela has skated in 11 games with the Devils this season after returning to the lineup from a torn ACL and a torn meniscus in his right knee in the middle of December.
