Coach Jack Capuano likes the play of rookie defenseman Aaron Ness.

Ness was recalled by the Islanders on Wednesday and played 17:39 minutes in a losing cause Saturday. "It's just his mobility -- he can skate and move the puck, and this is the new NHL," Capuano said. "When you trust your feet as a defenseman, it's a good quality to have." Ness is pointless in 11 career NHL games including two this season.

Aaron Ness had two assists in the Bridgeport Sound Tigers' 3-2 victory against the Springfield Falcons Saturday night.

Ness has four assists in five AHL contests. He participated in nine games with the New York Islanders last season, but he's still looking for his first point at the NHL level.

Mark Eaton will be able to play after all. Both defensemen have minimal value at best right now, but Ness' best days are ahead of him.

The New York Islanders announced today that defenseman Aaron Ness has been recalled on emergency basis from the Bridgeport Sound Tigers of the AHL.

The statuses of defensemen Mark Eaton (lower body) and Dylan Reese (flu) are uncertain for today’s game against the New Jersey Devils. Ness was selected with the 40th overall pick by the Islanders in the 2008 draft and played well in the absence of Travis Hamonic earlier in February.

Aaron Ness has made the most of his playing time in the absence of Travis Hamonic.

Ness was selected with the 40th overall pick by the Islanders in the 2008 draft and was a plus-2 through his first six games entering Saturday night. The coaching staff has been impressed with the youngster who has given the Islanders a quick-footed playmaker from the back-end.

He concluded the contest with 14:25 of ice time and was credited with two blocked shots. The Islanders are missing key blueliners in Travis Hamonic and Milan Jurcina because of injuries, so Ness got the call to see some time with the big club. He has 17 points and a plus-6 rating in 46 games with AHL Bridgeport this season.

Ness' recently inked three-year, entry-level contract with the Islanders, but it won't come into effect until 2011-12. However, that won't stop him from making his AHL debut on Friday. Ness had two goals and 14 points in 35 NCAA games with the University of Minnesota this season.

Aaron Ness plans to return to the University of Minnesota for the 2010-11 season.

Ness was selected in the second round of the 2008 entry draft by the New York Islanders. He'll also attend Islanders camp over the summer, so he might end up changing his mind. Ness only had two goals and 12 points in 39 NCAA games last season, but Minnesota coach Don Lucia feels that Ness improved defensively. However, Lucia plans to pair him with a stay-at-home blueliner next season so Ness can contribute more offensively.
