Luca Sbisa (hand) has returned from his conditioning stint in the AHL.

Despite that, Sbisa still isn't likely to play on Tuesday. That's more of a reflection of Mark Fistric's solid play than Sbisa's health. "It isn't like a normal year when he’d be a guy where you'd pencil in right now," Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau said. "We're playing pretty good. I think we're pretty good defensively most nights. He's not coming in to get anointed. He's going to have earn a spot there as Mark Fistric earned a spot. Sat out 10 games in a row earlier on in the year [and now] he's earned his place."

Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau explained the rationale for sending Luca Sbisa (ankle) down to the minors for a conditioning stint.

"It’s different when you’re playing against guys that are hitting you rather than going in and battling Dustin Penner for a minute," Boudreau said. "I said it would be great if you went down and got a couple of games under your belt against people that don’t like you." Sbisa is expected back in the NHL on Monday in New York.

Sbisa isn't ready to practice with the Ducks yet. "I guess we underestimated it at first a bit," he said. "We noticed pretty quickly it's a little more serious than what we originally thought. I thought it'd just be something that would take a few days and I'd be back. But now it’s almost a month."

Defenseman Luca Sbisa conceded it "might be a stretch" for him to play when the Ducks open their regular season Wednesday.

Sbisa, wearing a boot over his sprained left ankle, worked out Thursday without the boot for the first time since his injury. He said he'll try to skate Sunday, something imperative for him to do to play in the opener. "It's still possible, but if it's not Colorado, I still have three days" to play in the second game, versus Minnesota on Oct. 5.
