Ted Nolan said he was encoraged by the play of Cody Hodgson in the Sabres' last two games.
He feels the disappointing forward has played better recently. Hodgson was centering Drew Stafford and Nicolas Deslauriers in practice Friday and may be finally turning the corner after a brutal first quarter of the season which saw him register a mere two points. Nov 22 - 9:36 AM

Buffalo Sabres forward Cody Hodgson doesn't seem oblivious to how disappointing his season has been so far.

"Obviously, I need to be better," Hodgson said before Saturday's big win against the Toronto Maple Leafs. "That’s the first thing. If you’re producing on the ice, then you’re going to get more ice time. There’s not a better way to look at it than that. If I play better, then I’m going to play more."

We wouldn't be shocked if Cody Hodgson was a healthy scratch Saturday night against the Maple Leafs.

If Buffalo coach Ted Nolan wants to send a message to the struggling Hodgson, sitting him against the Leafs would be a bold idea. Hodgson, who has registered only two points in 18 games and has a terrible minus 10 plus/minus rating, grew up in Toronto and missing Saturday's contest would certainly bother him. Considering Hodgson only had 7:53 of ice time Thursday night against Minnesota, he's already been semi-scratched. Marcus Foligno is due back from injury and one of Hodgson, Chris Stewart or Tyler Ennis (who is a little banged up) will likely sit out to make room on the roster for Foligno's return.
Nov 15 - 9:14 AM

Cody Hodgson will be back at center on the Sabres' second line against the Penguins Saturday night.

He has been moved from wing to center and back a number of times as Buffalo coach Ted Nolan tries to light a fire under the talented but underperforming Hodgson. In fact, Hodgson only played 8:46 while skating on the fourth line against the Bruins Thursday. He will likely line up between Chris Stewart and Marcus Folingo against Pittsburgh, a much better gig than he had against Boston. We would keep Hodgson on reserve until he shows some signs of life.
Nov 1 - 9:30 AM

Cody Hodgson scored for the Sabres in a stunning 2-1 win against the San Jose Sharks on Saturday.

Hodgson, 24, is still having a disappointing season so far (just two points and a -6 rating with a scant 10 SOG in nine games), but perhaps this will light a fire under him? He only received 10:48 time on ice on Saturday, so this may just be wakeup call material for the 10th pick of the 2008 NHL Draft.
Oct 25 - 6:54 PM

In eight games this season three of the Sabres' top-line forwards have combined for a total of nine shots on goal.

You read that right. Cody Hodgson, Drew Stafford and Matt Moulson have combined to average slightly more than just one shot on goal per game. That despite ample ice time in both five-on-five and power-play situations for all three. That should tell just how awful the Sabres are playing collectively and how you need to bench any Buffalo player you had the misfortune of selecting on draft day.
Oct 25 - 9:38 AM

Cody Hodgson continues to struggle despite two significant position moves that should ultimately benefit him.

Hodgson started the season as a left winger on the Sabres' second line and up front on the team's second power-play unit. This week he has been shifted back to his natural center position and been given the job of anchoring the Sabres' first power-play unit on the point. Notwithstanding these positive moves, Hodgson still has not recorded a point this season and had only one shot on goal in Friday's 1-0 loss to Florida. At least Hodgson is aware that he needs to shoot to score. "Obviously I need to shoot more. It’s just a mind-set, being able to shoot when nobody's ready. That type of thing. Because the goalies in this league are so good when they're ready for it they're going to stop it. If you can shoot, the quick-release guys, they score goals." Although it is easy to give up on Hodgson at this point, we suggest you be patient a little longer.
Oct 18 - 9:29 AM

Cody Hodgson skated on the points on Buffalo's first power-play unit during Thursday's practice.

"We have one of the better shooters in the game in Cody Hodgson, so we've got to spring him and have him in position to shoot that puck," said coach Ted Nolan. Hodgson has registered just four shots in four games this season. He doesn't have a goal yet, but he has one assist.
Oct 17 - 10:41 AM

Cody Hodgson will shift back to center on Tuesday.

Thus ends - or at least postpones - the Sabres' experiment of having Hodgson play on the left wing. Buffalo has gotten off to a terrible start this season and while that's frankly not surprising, coach Ted Nolan is still pushing hard to try to make them at least competitive.
Oct 14 - 12:41 PM

Cody Hodgson has no points and a minus-4 rating after three games this season.

He has been credited with just one shot during that span as well. Hodgson isn't the only player looking for offense on the Sabres, as the team has received goals from just two players (Tyler Ennis and Zemgus Girgensons) so far.
Oct 14 - 7:55 AM

Cody Hodgson is likely to start the season as a left winger.

Hodgson got some experience in that position towards the end of the 2013-14 campaign and during the 2014 World Hockey Champioinships. He feels comfortable in that role at this point and has certainly had some strong performances as a left winger. He played alongside Mikhail Grigorenko and Chris Stewart during Sunday's preseason game and that might prove to be his linemates for the season opener as well.
Sep 29 - 6:13 PM

Cody Hodgson continues to be Team Canada's top performer at the IIHF World Hockey Champioinships in Belarus.

He leads the Canadians in scoring with six goals and seven points in five games, good for fourth overall in tournament scoring. Hodgson has shifted from center to wing and is flanking Nazem Kadri with Troy Brouwer on the other side. The Sabres should take note. If there was any doubt, Hodgson is a much more productive winger than pivot.
May 17 - 10:14 AM

Cody Hodgson recorded a hat trick to lead Canada to a 6-1 win over Denmark in World Hockey Championship preliminary round play.

He has four goals and one assist in five games at the tournament. Linemate Nazem Kadri assisted on two of his goals. Matt Read scored two goals in the match, while Ryan Ellis and Kyle Turris contributed two helpers apiece.
May 15 - 5:17 PM

Cody Hodgson registered an assist in Canada's surprising 3-2 overtime loss to France at the IIHF Championships Friday.

He assisted on Canada's first goal, a power-play marker by Brayden Schennn with 14 seconds left in the first period. Hodgson is one of two Sabre players on Team Canada. Tyler Myers is the other.
May 10 - 9:59 AM

Cody Hodgson was productive as a left winger down the stretch for Buffalo.

He recorded four goals and four assists in the Sabres' last nine games after he was moved to the wing to utilize Zemgus Girgensons' skills in the middle. "I like it. Teddy asked me if I felt comfortable there, and I do," Hodgson said. "I do feel comfortable, especially with Zemgus. He's got a lot of speed and opens up so much room." If Buffalo has too many wingers on their roster next season then Hodgson could end up being put back at center next season, but his versatility to play either position will probably come up at points during the year. "Wherever he wants to put me, I’ll play."
