Mitch Wahl will be permitted to test unrestricted free agency.
He won't be getting a qualifying offer from the Flyers, so he can sign anywhere on July 5. Wahl played for the Utah Grizzlies of the ECHL as well as Abbotsford and Adirondack of the AHL last season. Philadelphia acquired him from Calgary for fellow minor-leaguer Mike Testwuide in February. Tue, Jul 2, 2013 09:08:00 AM

Mitch Wahl has been called up by the AHL Abbotsford Heat.

Wahl has 11 goals and 39 points in 30 games with the ECHL Utah Grizzlies this season. With the lockout ending, a number of AHL teams have lost their top players and that's created opportunities for others to show what they can do at the top minor league level.

Mitch Wahl has been impressive at the AHL Abbotsford Heat training camp.

Wahl's stock fell hard over the last season. He ended up getting sent down to the ECHL in 2011-12 and wasn't even invited to the summer development camp. Still, at the age of 22, Wahl might be finally turning a corner. "I see a physical change in Mitch," assistant GM John Weisbrod said. "He’s thicker and stronger, and it’s clear he has worked hard. This is a kid who I thought in the summer, he has every reason to physically and emotionally pack it in with us. l thought I would come in and either see a guy who was indifferent and out of shape and here because he had no place to go or I would see a guy who realized, ‘I’m up against it. My career is on the line. I’m going to put my best foot forward.’"

Mitch Wahl missed most of the 2010-11 season due to a concussion, but he's healthy now.

Wahl sustained the injury in mid-November and he only played in 17 AHL games as a result. He's been spending the last month working with strength and conditioning coach Rich Hesketh. He was regarded as a dark horse candidate in last year's training camp, but he'll probably begin the 2011-12 season in the minors.

Mitch Wahl has been reassigned by the Calgary Flames.

Wahl was regarded as something of a dark horse candidate to win a roster spot, but he failed to make it past the first round of roster cuts. Wahl was impressive when he filled in for the injured Matthew Stajan on Tuesday, but apparently that wasn't enough for the Flames, who are already deep in the center position.

Mitch Wahl will get a chance to start the season with the Flames.

Wahl is in a perfect position as the Flames have been hurt at center with injuries to Daymond Langkow and Matthew Stajan. He played on the top line with Rene Bourque and Niklas Hagman for the final two periods on Tuesday, his first NHL game, albeit a preseason one. "It was my first pro experience at the NHL level, and I was able to actually play on the top line," Wahl said. "Unfortunately, Stajan got hurt and it enabled me to come up, play some power plays, so I got right in there and had a lot of fun." Wahl could be a big sleeper as the former second round pick has a lot of offensive upside.

The Calgary Flames have signed Mitch Wahl to a three-year Entry level contract.

Wahl was the Flames second round pick, 48th overall in the 2008 Entry Draft. Wahl was sent back to junior hockey this season. He had 37 goals and 69 points for Spokane of the WHL last season. He will play there again this season. He eventually has a chance to be a top-six forward in the NHL, but that is still more than a few years away.
