Viktor Tikhonov will remain in the KHL for the 2014-15 season.
Tikhonov was selected in the first round, 28th overall in the 2008 Draft and played 61 NHL games that season but has not been back in the NHL since as he played some in the minors before the Coyotes loaned him to the KHL. He has one year remaining at $3.1 million in a contract that he apparently cannot get out of. The Coyotes will continue to hold his NHL rights until the summer of 2015 when he will become a UFA. The Coyotes demoted Viktor Tikhonov to Portland of the AHL on Saturday.

It was to be a make or break camp for Tikhinov and it appears it broke. It looks as Vasily's son will never make it big in the NHL. Other demoted to the AHL by the Coyotes on Saturday were forward Marc-Antoine Pouliot and defensemen Chris Summers and Max Goncharov.

Viktor Tikhonov is heading into training camp with a make-or-break mindset to make the team.

"Absolutely," he said. "Especially for me, you don't know how long you're going to be a prospect, so this could be the last chance right here. You've got to give everything and just got to fight to make the team." He can play center or the wing and with Kyle Turris still unsigned heading into camp there could be an opportunity for him down the middle. Tikhonov appeared in 61 games with Phoenix in 2008-09, but he hasn't been back to the NHL level since.

The Phoenix Coyotes have sent Viktor Tikhonov to the minors.

Tikhonov played for the San Antonio Rampage last season but left around Thanksgiving and played 25 games in his native Russia with Cherepovets Severstal of the KHL where he potted 14 goals. He was definitely helped by playing in the K as it helped his offensive skills, but once again finds himself in San Antonio. He is only 22 years of age so he still has a bright future in the NHL.

Viktor Tikhonov was helped playing in Russia earlier this season.

Tikhonov left the San Antonio Rampage of the AHL in November to play 25 games in the KHL with Cherepovets Severstal where he scored 14 goals. "When I got sent down, I wanted to give myself a chance to get back up," Tikhonov said. "I played there for two months in San Antonio and at that point, the team was doing pretty well and didn't get called up once and thought it was probably better to go to a better level. Last year here in Phoenix, I was more of a defensive kind of guy - penalty kill and stuff like that. But over there, it switched completely for me. I was power play and scoring, and that worked out well. I got a lot more confidence in that and developed my shot a lot more." That should bode well in the future for the former first round pick.

Viktor Tikhonov has reportedly joined CSKA Moscow of the KHL.

Tikhonov had been playing for the AHL San Antonio Rampage. "My son has been sent to the KHL, he has already landed in Moscow and he's ready to play for CSKA" - Tikhonov's father, Vasily Tikhonov said. "The only problem is that the league is investigating where his rights belong to. He left the NHL playing for Severstal Cherepovets, but that was two years ago." Tikhonov was selected with the 28th overall pick in the 2008 NHL entry draft. If this report is true, than Tikhonov will probably finish the season in Russia before trying to earn a spot on the Coyotes' 2010-11 opening day roster out of training camp.
