The Detroit Red Wings have officially re-signed Thomas McCollum.
McCollum got a two-way contract if the earlier reports are accurate, which obviously makes sense given that he's likely to start the season in the minors. McCollum will probably be called up if Jimmy Howard or Jonas Gustavsson get hurt, which is likely to happen at some point during the 2014-15 campaign given their histories. Jul 11 - 3:01 PM

Thomas McCollum has signed a one-year, two-way contract with Detroit.

"McCollum has made strides and is developing into the prospect we hoped he would be -- a little slower than we thought, but he's become a real solid AHL goaltender," GM Ken Holland said earlier this month. "Some players bloom a little later." He just completed his best season in the AHL, with a 24-12-4 record, a 2.30 goals-against average and a .922 save percentage for Grand Rapids. He'll back up Petr Mrazek next campaign.

The Detroit Red Wings signed goaltender Thomas McCollum to a minor-league deal.

The signing comes one day after the Red Wings did not give McCollum a qualifying offer. McCollum has been a disappointment for the Red Wings since they drafted him in the first round of the 2008 Draft. He was 45-55-6 in three seasons with Grand Rapids of the AHL and managed to play in one NHL game where he gave up three goals on eight shots in 15 minutes of action. The good news is that he is only 23, and goalies usually take a lot longer to mature.

Thomas McCollum will not get a qualifying offer from Detroit.

The former first-round pick, 30th overall, of the Wings in 2008 compiled a 45-55-6 record in three seasons with the Grand Rapids Griffins in the AHL. McCollum appeared in just one NHL game with Detroit when he allowed three goals on eight shots in 15 minutes in relief of Joey MacDonald on March 30, 2011 during a 10-3 loss to St. Louis. His old starter spot belongs to Petr Mrazek and Jared Coreau is slated to back him up.

The Red Wings must make a decision on whether to tender an offer to restricted free agent Thomas McCollum before Monday's 4pm deadline.

McCollum was the Wings first round pick in the 2008 draft, but he hasn't developed the way the organization had hoped. While the possibility exists he could serve as Jimmy Howard's backup next season, the team is probably more interested in a more solid option.

The Detroit Red Wings have recalled Thomas McCollum from the minors.

Jonas Gustavsson has a sore groin, an injury that has bothered him since the first game of the season so McCollum will back up Jimmy Howard. He has no fantasy value at this time as Howard should start every game.

Thomas McCollum has been sent down by the Detroit Red Wings.

McCollum has been serving as Jimmy Howard's understudy, but he hasn't gotten any playing time in that role. Detroit is demoting McCollum so he can start in some games.

Thomas McCollum was summoned from the minors on Wednesday night.

He served as Jimmy Howard's backup on Tuesday before being assigned to Grand Rapids where he backed up Petr Mrazek in the Griffins' 5-4 shootout win against Oklahoma City on Wednesday. Detroit plays Minnesota Friday in their next game.

The Detroit Red Wings will recall Thomas McCollum according to GM Ken Holland.

The move was necessitated by the groin injury suffered by Jonas Gustavsson Saturday. McCollum has struggled the last three seasons in the AHL after being the Red Wings first round pick in the 2008 Draft but has been better this season with a 10-6-1 record to go with a 2.69 GAA and a less than stellar .899 save percentage.

Thomas McCollum turned aside 31 of 32 shots in the Grand Rapids Griffins' 2-1 overtime victory against the Chicago Wolves.

McCollum has now won three of his last four games. He has a 2.55 GAA and .907 save percentage in 12 AHL games this season.

Thomas McCollum stopped all 20 shots as the Grand Rapids Griffins shut out the Chicago Wolves 3-0 Friday.

McCollum has been a huge disappointment to the Red Wings after they drafted him at the end of the first round in the 2008 Draft. The shutout gives him a save percentage of .905 on the season, after three years of .881, .879 and .891 respectively. Adam Almquist, Joakim Andersson and Tomas Tatar scored for the Griffins.

Thomas McCollum knows he hasn't lived up to expectations.

McCollum was taken in the first round of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft and has had a tough time even landing a permanent gig with the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins. "I don't think anybody is very happy with the way I've played the last couple seasons," said McCollum. "Nobody has been more disappointed than myself." McCollum is still young enough to turn things around, but it doesn't look like he'll be in the NHL anytime soon - if he ever makes it to the NHL at all.

Thomas McCollum has not had a lot of success in the Detroit farm system.

The goaltender was the first round pick of the Red Wings in the 2008 Draft and has struggled ever since. He has not taken the jump required as he has split his three minor league seasons with the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins and the ECHL Toledo Walleye. He was 6-6-2 with the Goldeye in 2011-12 with a .909 save percentage and a 2.62 GAA, but was only 11-16-0 with a 3.49 GAA and a .891 save percentage in the AHL. McCollum may need a change of scenery as it doesn't seem to be working in Detroit.

After struggling since the Detroit Red Wings drafted him in 2008, Thomas McCollum needs to take a step forward in the final season of his entry-level contract.

McCollum had a 3.33 GAA and .879 save percentage in 22 AHL games last season, he also spent 23 contests in the ECHL, posting a 2.76 GAA and .909 save percentage. "He's gotta get to a point where he says, 'Enough's enough. I gotta perform at the level I was at when the Red Wings first saw me,'" Detroit goaltending coach Jim Bedard said. "We saw him play a ton of good hockey games. If anything Thomas has gotta learn that we're not making or breaking anybody on one day or one shot or one situation. I believe. I see his work ethic and his agility." Bedard was happy with how McCollum did in Detroit's recent development camp, which is a step in the right direction. Stay tuned.

Thomas McCollum, the Red Wings first pick and 30th overall in the 2008 Entry Draft, struggled this season in the minors.

McCollum was 6-12-2 with a 3.33 GAA and a .879 save percentage in 22 games for Grand Rapids of the AHL and was 11-9-2 with a 2.76 GAA and a .909 save percentage in 23 games with Toledo of the ECHL when he was sent down to regain some confidence. He also managed to play in his first NHL game this past season when both Jimmy Howard and Chris Osgood were injured in late March. He gave up three goals on only eight shots. The Red Wings are a patient organization (they gave Jimmy Howard four full seasons in the minors before calling him up to back up Chris Osgood) so McCollum will have every chance in the world to show the rest of hockey what the Red Wings saw in him to make him a first round pick three years ago.
