John Mitchell racked up 17 penalty minutes in Wednesday's 5-0 loss to Los Angeles.

He dropped the gloves with Kings defenseman Brayden McNabb just before the two-minute mark of the first period. Mitchell was coming to the defense of teammate Rene Bourque, so he got an extra minor for instigating and 10-minute misconduct. He was scratched on Saturday and has one goal in 40 games this season.

An interesting turn of events to say the least. Mitchell has no points with three shots, two hits and a block during four games of action. So we'd leave him on the wire.

John Mitchell cleared through waivers and will stay with the Avalanche.

Mitchell has been in the League since 2008-09 and has spent most of that time with Colorado. Now in his fifth season with them, he's posted 42 goals and 99 points with 140 PIMs, 216 blocks and 441 hits. Not too shabby for a depth player, but it's easy to see why he could be seen as expendable.

Mitchell has no points in four games this season. He's a veteran of 487 NHL games, but we don't think he'll be claimed due to his $1.8 million annual cap hit.

John Mitchell (hip) is set to return on Friday.

Mitchell tested his status during Sunday's practice. "It was a really annoying and very tedious injury that I had," Mitchell said. "It’s 100 percent now, which is good. I was happy to be able to skate with my teammates, because it’s been a long time. It felt really good." He missed the Avalanche's first five games of 2016-17.
