John Mitchell (concussion) might be able to return before the end of the first round.

Of course, given that it's a concussion we're talking about, any timetable needs to be taken with a grain of salt. Mitchell wasn't able to participate in Colorado's final two games of the regular season.

As initially speculated, John Mitchell will get elevated into a top-six role with the Avalanche.

However, he will start out on the wing alongside Paul Stastny and Gabriel Landeskog. He played between Ryan O'Reilly and Jamie McGinn when Matt Duchene was injured on Saturday, but that spot will be occupied by Nathan MacKinnon.

John Mitchell may move into a top-six role on the Avalanche with Matt Duchene injured.

He played between Ryan O'Reilly and Jamie McGinn on Saturday after Duchene got hurt. Colorado could also plug Nathan MacKinnon back into center. Mitchell has 10 goals and 28 points in 69 games this season.

John Mitchell scored the game-winning goal and added an assist for Colorado in Saturday's game against San Jose.

His 10th goal of the year came during a second-period power play. Mitchell has 28 points in 69 games this season. He returned to Colorado's lineup on Saturday after missing four contests with a back injury. Paul Stastny and Cody McLeod had the team's other markers versus the Sharks.
Mar 29 - 6:27 PM

John Mitchell will indeed suit up against San Jose Saturday afternoon.

He had missed the Avs' last four games due to a back injury but seems good to go and will center the team's third line between Cody McLeod and Max Talbot. Mitchell is a decent hockey player but he really doesn't have any fantasy value.

John Mitchell (back) isn't likely to return on Thursday.

Mitchell will miss his third straight game on Tuesday. The good news is that he shouldn't be out too much longer. Although the odds of him playing Thursday aren't in Mitchell's favor, Avalanche coach Patrick Roy thinks he might be back on Saturday.

Mar 24 - 5:32 PM

The Avalanche expect John Mitchell to return to action before the end of the regular season.

He is dealing with a back injury after he crashed into the boards in a game earlier this week. Although that is good news for the Avs, it should be of little consquence to those in fantasy pools.

John Mitchell (back) will not be available on Friday.

It will be Mitchell's second straight game on the sidelines. He's day-to-day, but that doesn't necessarily mean he will return soon. "Could be two days, could be 10 days," Avalanche coach Patrick Roy said.
