An interesting turn of events to say the least. Mitchell has no points with three shots, two hits and a block during four games of action. So we'd leave him on the wire.

John Mitchell cleared through waivers and will stay with the Avalanche.

Mitchell has been in the League since 2008-09 and has spent most of that time with Colorado. Now in his fifth season with them, he's posted 42 goals and 99 points with 140 PIMs, 216 blocks and 441 hits. Not too shabby for a depth player, but it's easy to see why he could be seen as expendable.

The Colorado Avalanche have placed John Mitchell on waivers.

Mitchell has no points in four games this season. He's a veteran of 487 NHL games, but we don't think he'll be claimed due to his $1.8 million annual cap hit.

John Mitchell (hip) is set to return on Friday.

Mitchell tested his status during Sunday's practice. "It was a really annoying and very tedious injury that I had," Mitchell said. "It’s 100 percent now, which is good. I was happy to be able to skate with my teammates, because it’s been a long time. It felt really good." He missed the Avalanche's first five games of 2016-17.

Colorado Avalanche coach Jared Bednar says that John Mitchell (hip) won't travel with the team on their four-game road trip.

Mitchell has become a steady down-roster contributor, but hip injuries can be serious and he still isn't practicing. He's out at least until Oct. 28th when the Avalanche return home, but we'd be skeptical based on his lack of practices thus far.
