Team Russia captain Ilya Nikulin, a defenseman in the KHL, is in talks with teams to come to the NHL next season.
Known as an offensive contributor from the blueline, Nikulin has been linked with the Washington Capitals. He is 33 years old and had 18 goals and 53 points in 110 games over the past two seasons. Nikulin's teammate Yevgeni Medvedev signed a one-year deal with the Philadelphia Flyers earlier this year, so it is likely Nikulin will be looking for a similar contract. Ilya Nikulin will not play with the Thrashers this season.

The former second round draft pick in 2000 has teased Atlanta with his skill from the back end, but never made serious overtures to play in the NHL. He is slated to play with AK Bars Kazan in the new Kontinental Hockey League. "We’re disappointed...the player would be a good player in the NHL," Waddell said. This is yet another reason that the Thrashers will likely tie up blue chip prospect Zach Bogosian in order to get him into uniform.

It looks like Ilya Nikulin will stay in Russia to finish his existing contract.

This could very well be a fallout from the recent NHL vs. Russian super league KHL debate over finishing contracts. The second round selection of the Atlanta Thrashers in the 2000 draft had a solid season last year contributing 18 points in 57 games for AK Bars Kazan. If the Thrashers can pry Nikulin away from Kazan he'd more than likely make the club and be third or fourth on their depth chart.

The Atlanta Thrashers are close to signing stay-at-home defender Ilya Nikulin to a contract.

He has played in the Russian League, for Dynamo of Moscow and Ak Bars of Kazan, his entire career, but appears ready to finally bring his show to the NHL. "At least in terms of dollars, the deal is done," said Nikulin's agent Scott Lites.
