Alexander Sulzer left Saturday's contest in the first period with a lower body injury and did not return.

Sulzer was acquired last year as part of the trade deadline move that saw Cody Hodgson join the Sabres in exchange for Zack Kassian and Marc-Andre Gragnani. He has four points in 17 games this season.
Feb 24 - 11:06 AM

Alexander Sulzer was a healthy scratch for the second time this season Tuesday night.

He leads the team's defense corps with three goals, which oddly enough is more than all but four of Buffalo's forwards. Sulzer has also added an assist and a plus-4 rating in 12 appearances this season for the Sabres. Coach Lindy Ruff said the decision to sit Sulzer was made "based on what we're looking at in the game" and "some of it is based on mobility of our defense and how they get involved."

Buffalo defenseman Alexander Sulzer has signed with ERC Ingolstadt to play in the DEL.

He will join the team on Thursday. Sulzer came over to the Sabres last season as part of the trade that saw Zack Kassian shipped to Vancouver. He was solid in Buffalo with eight points in 15 games and was paired with Christian Ehrhoff.

Alexander Sulzer's one-year deal with the Buffalo Sabres will garner him $725,000 in 2012-13, which is slightly higher than the $700,000 he earned this past season.

He was acquired as part of the trade deadline move that saw Cody Hodgson join the Sabres in exchange for Zack Kassian and Marc-Andre Gragnani. Sulzer skated in 15 games with Buffalo after the move, while finishing with three goals, five assists and a plus-2 rating. "He fit in well," GM Darcy Regier said Monday. "He played very well with Christian [Ehrhoff]. I think the other thing you really noticed is his composure out there, his ability to not only break up plays, which is the most important thing defensively, but to make plays offensively and the patience that he showed. We were surprised, pleasantly surprised, with his play."

Alexander Sulzer missed Thursday's game because of a personal matter.

Sulzer left the team and flew to Nashville because of the undisclosed issue. "There's nothing you can do," Sabres coach Lindy Ruff said. "In his case it was an emergency and he had to leave." It's not clear if he'll be available for the season finale on Saturday.

Alexander Sulzer contributed the first two-goal, three-point game of his career on Tuesday night versus Toronto.

He has been called upon to play increased minutes for the Sabres due to key injuries on their blueline and although he did have some rough patches during his 24:35 of ice time, Sulzer came through with some clutch points to keep Buffalo in the match and in the playoff hunt. He has eight points and a plus-2 rating in 15 games with the Sabres since being acquired from Vancouver at the trade deadline.

Alexander Sulzer has topped 20 minutes of ice time in each of Buffalo's last three games.

He received a season-high of 23:59 in the Sabres' 3-2 overtime win over Montreal on Monday. Sulzer registered his first point, with an assist, since the trade from Vancouver in that contest. He doesn't get any special teams time, but that could change with Tyler Myers suspended for the next three games. In any event, the puck-moving defenseman seems to have earned the trust of coach Lindy Ruff.

Alexander Sulzer might make his Sabres' debut in Saturday's game against Vancouver.

That would be a nice little coincidence, seeing as the Canucks are the ones who traded Sulzer to Buffalo on Monday. Sulzer might play alongside blueliner Christian Ehrhoff.

Sulzer will get $700,000 when in the NHL and $105,000 in the AHL. Sulzer suited up in 40 games with Nashville and Florida last season, but he managed just five points and a minus-8 rating over that span. He has no fantasy value.
