Winger Kevin Westgarth is hoping to ink a deal with the Edmonton Oilers.

Westgarth is in camp on a professional tryout but his experience on a young Oilers squad could be a help in garnering a spot on the roster. The enforcer is the son-in-law of former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Bill Cowher and Westgarth has won a Stanley Cup with the Kings in 2012. He will get plenty of penalty minutes and an occasional point if he manages to crack the Oilers lineup this season.

Kevin Westgarth wasted little time Saturday night seeking out Luke Gazdic for a return bout.

In their March 1st fight, Gazdic concussed Westgarth with a hook that sidelined him for 10 days. After Saturday's fisticuffs the two tough guys acknowledged each other with respect and were seen chatting in the penalty box. We hope you anticipated this tussle if you needed to boost your penalty minute totals.

Kevin Westgarth (head) returned to Calgary to seek medical attention after getting injured in a fight on Saturday with Edmonton's Luke Gazdic.

While the remainder of the team headed off to Minnesota, the Flames were worried that Westgarth may have suffered a concussion so they are taking no chances with his health. He has a goal and two points in 32 games with 41 penalty minutes. Consider him day-to-day for now.

Kevin Westgarth found the back of the net in Calgary's 3-2 loss on Monday.

Westgarth was at the center of Calgary coach Bob Hartley's recent $25,000 fine. The NHL held Hartley responsible for starting their fourth line on Saturday and Westgarth in particular. Westgarth took the opening faceoff and then immediately got into a fight. He now has a goal and 32 penalty minutes in 23 games in 2013-14.

Kevin Westgarth returns to Carolina to face his former Hurricane teammates Monday.

The Flames acquired the rugged winger on December 30 in exchange for Greg Nemisz. Westgarth has no points with 11 penalty minutes and a minus-five rating with the Flames in six games and it would not surprise us at Rotoworld to see him get into a fight tonight.

Acquiring Kevin Westgarth on Monday is part of Calgary Flames president Brian Burke's plan to make the team tougher.

"I don't like the way we've been pushed around," Burke said. Westgarth has played in just 12 games this season, but there's a good chance that he'll have a bigger role with Calgary.
