Although the Flyers are a tough team, it appears the Hurricanes do not believe they need Kevin Westgarth in the lineup against them Saturday night.

It looks as if Carolina is going to dress seven defensemen and scratch Westgarth against Philly Saturday night. Adjust your roster accordingly.

Kevin Westgarth was a pivotal member of the players' negotiating committee that eventually hammered out a new CBA with the owners.

On the ice, the Princeton grad is known as a fourth-liner, but off the ice he's as respected as they come for the work he's done. The son-in-law of former Steelers coach Bill Cowher at one of the low points was the lone player invited by the owners. "We were all very impressed with Kevin throughout the entire duration of the negotiation," NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said. "He was smart, articulate and thoughtful. Most of all, he was level-headed throughout, and dealt with the issues and our differences in position in a consistently professional manner — he never appeared angry or let things get personal."

The Carolina Hurricanes have acquired Kevin Westgarth from the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for Anthony Stewart, a 2013 fourth-round draft pick, and a 2014 sixth-round pick.

Westgarth had two points and 39 penalty minutes in 25 games with the Kings last season. He didn't participate in the Kings' Stanley Cup-winning playoff run. "We were looking for a character, team guy who can play a gritty role for our team," said Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford. "Kevin is a good addition to fill that spot." He'll probably get more playing time in Carolina, but you still need to be pretty desperate for PIM before he's worth considering in fantasy leagues.

Although some say it wasn't never officially broached, the NHLPA reportedly made a major concession by dropping the demand for a cap on escrow.

The league has roundly insisted that it couldn't absorb all the risk if the lockout damages revenues. By budging on this issue, the union shows a willingness to compromise. We'll see if that makes enough of a difference to get a deal done.
Jan 3 - 2:44 AM

The informational meeting between the NHL and NHLPA ended on Sunday, so now the union is reportedly holding an internal discussion to plot the next step.

Obviously it's unclear at this time when, exactly, the CBA discussions will reconvene. It still seems like there's a chance that the two sides could resume negotiating as early as Sunday night or possibly sometime on Monday.

As expected, the NHLPA opened up the process for players to vote for or against filing a disclaimer of interest on Sunday.

RDS' Renaud P. Lavoie reports that it began around 1 p.m. ET. Players have five days to cast their vote. A two-thirds majority is needed to put the wheels in motion, although the league's legal countermeasures are an obvious factor against it happening, too.

Kevin Westgarth claimed that the owners new to the CBA seemed to be uninformed compared to the players during last week's negotiations.

"It became obvious that the guys they brought in had nowhere near a complete understanding of what the proposals were and where we were in the negotiations," Westgarth said. "I thought it was great that Ron Burkle, Larry Tanenbaum, Mark Chipman and Jeff Vinik got involved — clearly they're passionate and care about the game — but it shows how tightly controlled the league is." It's worth noting that no owners are expected to be involved in the next negotiating session.

Kevin Westgarth scored four goals for the White Team Saturday in a 17-11 victory over the Black Team in the NHLPA charity game in Windsor, Ontario.

Westgarth isn't exactly known around the NHL for his scoring prowess, but Saturday's charity event was a different story for the Kings forward, who has been a critical member of the NHLPA during the ongoing negotiations with the league. There appeared to be some optimism from the players questioned during the event despite the apparent setback suffered on Thursday.

After about an hour and a half, the NHL and NHLPA ended their brief Sunday CBA talks.

The NHLPA passed along word that Chris Campoli, George Parros and Kevin Westgarth were on hand for the players along with Donald Fehr. Bill Daly and Gary Bettman were reportedly involved on the NHL side.

The Los Angeles Kings' Kevin Westgarth scored his first NHL goal on Wednesday.

It was Westgarth's eighth game of the season and his 73rd career contest. He's good for around two penalty minutes per game, but it should go without saying that he doesn't do much offensively.

The Kings are expected to dress Kevin Westgarth on Thursday night versus the Phoenix Coyotes.

He will replace Trent Hunter on the fourth line. Westgarth has amassed 14 penalty minutes in two games this season.
