The Pittsburgh Penguins have place Jeff Zatkoff on waivers.
The move was needed to send Zatkoff to the minors and it is expected that Zatkoff will pass by the noon Sunday deadline. Zatkoff was a longer shot to stick this season after spending last season as Marc-Andre Fleury's back up as the Penguins inked Thomas Greiss to a contract during the off-season. Nevertheless, Zatkoff was strong last season with a 12-6-2 record to go with a 2.61 GAA and a .912 save percentage. He will be recalled if there is an injury to the Penguins goaltending duo. Jeff Zatkoff and Thomas Greiss will split the net on Monday against the Minnesota Wild.

Both are looking to be the backup netminder behind Marc-Andre Fleury and they are now getting down to the nitty-gritty. Look for Zatkoff to be sent to the minors if the Penguins decide to start the season with two goaltenders.
Sep 28 - 10:55 AM

Jeff Zatkoff will have to contend with free agent signing Thomas Greiss for Pittsburgh's backup goalie job.

Zatkoff posted a 12-6-2 record with a 2.61 goals-against average and a .912 save percentage last year as Marc-Andre Fleury's understudy. He earned a two-year, one-way contract worth $1.2 million, but that came long before GM Jim Rutherford took over and Greiss was brought on board. Greiss has appeared in 69 NHL contests, which eclipses Zatkoff's total of 20 from a year ago. Zatkoff is ready to battle for his spot, but the odds don't appear to be in his favor.
Aug 15 - 11:49 AM

Goaltender Jeff Zatkoff, getting a start in goal for the Penguins' regular-season finale, came out on the short end of a 3-2 shootout against the visiting Ottawa Senators Sunday night.

Zatkoff was appearing in his 20th game of the season. He's unlikely to play in the playoffs unless first-stringer Marc-Andre Fleury is injured. Zatkoff finishes the season with a record of 12-6-2, a GAA of 2.61 and a save percentage of .912. Pittsburgh clinched the Metropolitan Division in early April but has not been satisfied with its game over the final two months of the season. Its top-ranked power-play unit hasn't been as effective in recent weeks because of injuries that have led to unfamiliar players (defenseman Brooks Orpik, for example) playing on the second unit. The Pens begin their opening playoff round against Columbus in Pittsburgh Wednesday night.

Apr 13 - 9:25 AM

Jeff Zatkoff allowed four goals on 20 shots in the Wild's 4-0 loss to the Penguins on Saturday night.

For most of the season, Zatkoff seemed like more than a capable backup. Lately, though, his play should worry the Penguins, especially with Marc-Andre Fleury's recent playoff history. Zatkoff has allowed three or more goals in three straight games he's played. He has a 2.66 goals-against average and .911 save percentage this season.
Apr 5 - 10:49 PM

The Pittsburgh Penguins will start Jeff Zatkoff on Saturday.

The Boston Bruins have secured the top seed in the Eastern Conference, which means that the Pittsburgh Penguins are locked into the number two spot. Without much left to play for before the postseason, the Penguins have every reason to want to prioritize keeping Marc-Andre Fleury fresh.
