Derek Smith suffered an upper body injury in the second period and did not return.

Just an FYI as the defenseman has only two goals and nine points this season. Consider him day-to-day for now.

Derek Smith (ankle) returned to action on Thursday February 23.

Smith has been out since December 29 with the ankle injury. He played 19:22 minutes on Thursday including four seconds shorthanded and seven seconds on the power play. Looks like they want to bring him back slowly only on specialty teams. If you are in desperate need of a blueliner, Smith is worth a shot in very deep leagues with two goals and 10 points in 33 games.

Derek Smith is likely to return from his ankle injury on Thursday night.

Coach Brent Sutter is calling the defenseman a game-time decision, but he'll probably be back in the lineup considering the match's importance in the club's playoff push. Smith has been sidelined since Dec. 29. "I've just got to do my job till I get my feet wet and get comfortable," said Smith. "It's been while, but the game hasn't changed. I just have to keep it simple. I'm excited to get back."

Derek Smith participated in Calgary's optional practice on Tuesday.

"It’s been a while. A little flustered right now," said Smith. "It’s tough. Those guys skate you hard out there. It’s not easy, but it’s got to be done. It’s just about getting back in game shape and getting my timing back." Smith hasn't played since Dec. 29, so he might report to the AHL on a conditioning stint before rejoining the Flames.

Flames' rookie defenseman Derek Smith may be able to return to action within in the next week.

He is recovering from a high ankle sprain that has kept him out of the lineup since the first of the month. Smith may need a little conditioning stint in the minors before he is ready to play in an NHL game.

The Calgary Flames inked Derek Smith, who is still sidelined with a high-ankle sprain, to a one-way, two-year contract extension on Wednesday.

The deal is worth $775,000 per season. "Up until the time of his injury he was one of our best and most consistent defensemen," GM Jay Feaster said. "He is a sound two-way hockey player with very good hockey sense, and he has seamlessly fit into the chemistry of our team." Smith has 10 points, 12 penalty minutes and a plus-2 rating in 32 games this season.

A high-ankle sprain will sideline Derek Smith for about six to eight weeks.

High-ankle sprains are difficult to rehab, so it very well might take two months. Smith has 10 points and 12 PIM this season, which means he doesn't have much more than modest fantasy appeal.

Derek Smith was injured blocking a shot in the second period Thursday and did not return.

He will be sidelined as apparently his right leg buckled according to the Calgary Herald. Coach Brent Sutter said: "It certainly didn’t look good." Stay tuned and consider him day-to-day for now.

Derek Smith notched the only tally in Tuesday's match between the Calgary Flames and Nashville Predators.

This goal marked Smith's first of 2011-12 and just his second point of the season. Obviously, he's likely not worth much of a look at this point, but the Flames certainly must have been happy. In more relevant news, Jarome Iginla collected an assist on that Smith score.

Derek Smith lived out of a hotel for the last few months, but he is expected to find a more permanent residence in the Calgary area.

Smith inked a one-year, two-way contract with the Calgary Flames over the summer. He had played in just 11 NHL games coming into this season, but it looks like he might stay with the Flames for the entire 2011-12 campaign. Smith has an assist and a plus-one rating in 13 contests. He's solid defensively, but Smith also has more offensive potential than those numbers suggest.

Smith will earn $700,000 if he spends the season in the NHL. He had 10 goals and 54 points in 71 games with AHL Binghamton last season. He also registered an assist in nine games with the Ottawa Senators in 2010-11.

Smith has 10 goals and 43 points in 59 AHL games this season. He also recorded his first NHL point on March 3rd.

Derek Smith might spend the rest of the season with the Ottawa Senators.

Although nothing is set in stone, the Senators are using the remainder of 2010-11 to give their younger players a taste of the NHL and Smith seems to have impressed coach Cory Clouston. "He's come a long way in the last four years, and I think last year's experience has helped him out as well," said Clouston. At the age of 26, it might be a stretch to call Smith a prospect, but he has been a great offensive defenseman at the AHL level over the last two seasons.

Derek Smith has been called up by the Ottawa Senators.

Smith should make his season debut on Tuesday. He has nine goals and 43 points in 59 AHL games this season.
