Wayne Simmonds is going to be one of the Philadelphia Flyers' assistant captains in 2014-15, according to Dave Isaac of the Courier-Post.
With Scott Hartnell now in Columbus and Kimmo Timonen's career in doubt, there was a clear void in leadership hierarchy. The 26-year-old Simmonds is coming off a career season in goals (29) and points (60) with five seasons left on his contract. Sep 18 - 11:51 PM

The Score points out that the Philadelphia Flyers boasted a great mix of specialists on their power play.

Claude Giroux mainly runs the show, but Wayne Simmonds is a great presence near the net. The question is whether losing Scott Hartnell will hurt spacing. Still, one big takeaway from The Score's breakdown might be that Simmonds' PP production could be reliable.

The Philadelphia Flyers tried to get the first overall pick from the Florida Panthers last week, but they weren't interested in giving up Wayne Simmonds in the deal.

That's the word from Jim Matheson of The Edmonton Journal, who said Simmonds may be as close to "untouchable as there is on the Flyers’ roster." Matheson said the Flyers likely were inclined to offer Matt Read, Luke Schenn or Braydon Coburn along with unloading Vincent Lecavalier's contract. Panthers defenseman Erik Gubranson may have also been part of the package coming to the Flyers.

Wayne Simmonds netted a hat trick to fuel Philadelphia to a season-saving 5-2 victory over the New York Rangers on Tuesday night to force a winner-take-all Game 7 Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden.

The Flyers finally came alive with their season on the line, as the Rangers clearly had a firm grasp of momentum through the first five games of the series. Simmonds scored the first, second and fourth Flyer goals of the night, as the home side broke out to a 4-0 lead in the first 40 minutes. The 25 year old has four goals and an assist through six games in the post-season.
Apr 29 - 10:31 PM

Wayne Simmonds' 29 goals don't just represent a new career-high; he also topped all Philadelphia Flyers players this season.

Simmonds scored two tallies to push that total to 29. He blew away his previous career-highs in points, too, as now has 60 on the season (his previous ceiling was 49). When you add his 106 PIM and 209 SOG (not to mention 15 of those goals being PPG), it's easy to see why Simmonds is one of the best power forward options in fantasy.

That is fourth best in the NHL behind teammate Claude Giroux (29), Kyle Okposo (29) and Sidney Crosby (28). His determination has been outstanding this season. "You know you're going to get the same thing from him every night," linemate Brayden Schenn said. "He's going to be up and down the wall. He wins his battles. He's going to be strong in front. He sees the ice well. He's been extra determined. I think he's one of the best net-front guys in the league. He's strong on the power play and dangerous in front of the net." Simmonds is owned in 75 percent of Yahoo! pools so if he is available in yours, grab him.

The Philadelphia Flyers' power play has been rather inept and so home fans constantly urge their favorite players to stop passing in a circle and shoot put the puck on net.

"They always want you to shoot," Wayne Simmonds said. "But it's almost like they don't see the guy standing there in front of you, ready to block the shot. We're not stupid." The Flyers are a staggering 11-for-88 (12.5 percent) with the man advantage in Philly. That ranks them 27th in the NHL. They are a different animal on the road, having scored at least one power-play goal in four straight games away from home. Overall, they are 23-for-94 (24.5 percent) on the road, good for fifth in the NHL. "Sometimes, it's just a matter of overcomplicating things and trying to make the extra fancy play," Luke Schenn surmised, even though he's not a member of the Flyers power play. "Sometimes, it goes to every player, even 5-on-5 when you're at home, you try to put on that extra show for the hometown crowd. It's obviously not as successful."
