Alec Martinez became the first player in NHL playoff history to score a pair of series-clinching goals in overtime.

He scored 14:43 into double overtime against the Rangers to win the Stanley Cup and he got the winner versus Chicago in Game 7 of the Western Conference Final. "I blacked out," Martinez told reporters after scoring Friday night. "I don't really remember. I think I threw my gear. I don't know. I just remember everyone coming at me and I couldn't breathe."

Alec Martinez, who scored the double-overtime goal Friday night to give the Kings a 3-2 win over the New York Rangers as well as the Stanley Cup championship, was not a favorite of Los Angeles coach Darryl Sutter earlier in the season.

Sutter wanted a defensive-minded group that allowed the fewest goals in the NHL, but he didn't display complete trust in Martinez, subjecting the third-year player to a competition for playing time and a diet of healthy scratches that left his games played 21 shy of the 82-game regular-season total. Martinez was too mistake-prone on the defensive end for Sutter's liking. But he shored things up to finish plus-17 in goal differential. With that, he found himself in the postseason rotation, playing in all of the Kings' 26 playoff games. After scoring 11 goals in the regular season, he added five more in the playoffs. "He did whatever it took, he just wanted to play," teammate Tyler Toffoli said of Martinez.

Alec Martinez clinched the Stanley Cup for the L.A. Kings with a dramatic game winning goal in double overtime on Friday night to lift the Kings to a 3-2 victory in Game 5 over the Rangers, placing a bookmark on the 2013-14 NHL season.

Tyler Toffoli’s initial shot was turned aside by Henrik Lundqvist 14:43 into the second overtime, but the rebound which came right to Martinez on the doorstep and the 26 year-old Michigan native made no mistake. Martinez’s fifth goal of the playoffs gave L.A. their second Cup in three seasons, and allowed the Kings to lift hockey’s holy grail on home ice.
Jun 14 - 12:37 AM

Alec Martinez's goal at 5:47 of the first overtime period in Chicago Sunday night lifted Los Angeles into the Stanley Cup Final.

The Kings came from behind to edge the Blackhawks 5-4 in Game 7 of the Western Conference Final. In doing so, they dethroned last year's Stanley Cup champions and became the first NHL team in history to win three straight Game 7s en route to the Final. It'll be the Kings' second appearance in the Stanley Cup Final in three seasons. They will meet the Eastern Conference champion New York Rangers in Game 1 in L.A. Wednesday. The Hawks blew three leads Sunday. They were up 2-0 in the first period and 3-2 after one. They took a 4-3 lead in the second. Marian Gaborik tied the game at 4-4 with his NHL-leading 12th playoff goal at 12:43 of the third, setting up the overtime drama. Justin Williams scored his seventh goal of the postseason in the first period, assisted on Martinez's game winner from the left point (which knuckled past Chicago goalie Corey Crawford after it was redirected off the body of Hawks defenseman Nick Leddy) and maintained his reputation for coming up big in Game 7s.
Jun 1 - 11:44 PM

To advance to the Stanley Cup Final series against the New York Rangers, the Los Angeles Kings will have to become the first NHL team to win three straight Game 7s in the postseason.

Los Angeles was dominant in Game 7s against in San Jose and Anaheim in the last two rounds and now the Kings need to win in Chicago Sunday night to advance to the Stanley Cup Final. The defending Stanley Cup champion Blackhawks are 8-1 in postseason play in Chicago this spring. "We've got a one-game playoff. . .in their building to punch a ticket to the finals," Kings defenseman Alec Martinez said, "and we've got to focus on learning from our mistakes tonight and going in there ready to play." Martinez has been remarkable in the playoffs, having been held off the scoresheet only once in his past six games. He has two goals and three assists in nine playoff games.

May 6 - 10:21 AM

Alec Martinez should get a big role on the blueline for the Kings in Game 2 Monday.

The Kings are hurting on the blueline with Willie Mitchell and Robyn Regehr on the sidelines. Martinez played 28:13 minutes as he trailed only Drew Doughty and Slava Voynov in time on ice. The Kings-Ducks series gets a couple of days off after Monday's tilt so look for Martinez to see plenty of ice time in Game 2 as well. He has a goal and four points in eight post-season games this season.
