Kostka suffered the injury in Game 1 and persevered through the rest of the game even though he couldn't shoot. "It's heartbreaking," Kostka said. "It's been a really exciting year for me and then, the emotions of being a part of the first (Toronto) team in nine years to be in the playoffs. Then, the second period you play, you get an injury and can't continue." Kostka will continue to skate and hope that the Leafs have a long run so he could get back in the lineup.

With Cody Franson also nursing an injury, Jake Gardiner and/or Ryan O'Byrne could step into the lineup for Game on Saturday. Kostka didn't have a good playoff debut Wednesday, as he ended up with a minus-3 rating and was on the ice for all four goals against in a 4-1 loss to Boston.

Mike Kostka didn't fair well in his NHL playoff debut Wednesday night.

He concluded the contest with a minus-3 rating and was on the ice for all four goals against in a 4-1 victory for the Boston Bruins. Kostka did hist best to forget the effort afterward, but more importantly to learn from his mistakes. "You learn, move forward. We've got to park," he said. "Theses series are four-out-of-seven. They're long series. It was just one game. It didn't go the way we wanted to. There's no time to dwell on that. We've just got to revisit some of the plays that went on and them move forward." Kostka was given increased ice time (22:22) in the contest because Cody Franson missed some time after taking a hard shot off the foot.
May 2 - 12:23 PM

Mike Kostka will be playing against his former organization, the Florida Panthers on Monday.

Kostka came close to making the Panthers last season, but fell just short in training camp. He ended up making his NHL debut at 27 this season. "It's not one of those when you come back and you're really trying to hand it to them or anything," said Kostka. "I have a lot of friends and (Panthers coach) Kevin Dineen was a big mentor for me my first two years in (AHL) Portland. Then he gave me some good opportunities in exhibition games last year. It's not like I'm coming back here for revenge. But when you come back and know a lot of guys, I'm excited to come back and try to get the victory."
Feb 18 - 2:00 PM

Mike Kostka logged an impressive 22:59 minutes in his NHL debut on Saturday.

"I thought Mike Kostka was a dominant player," said Leafs coach Randy Carlyle. "Played a lot of minutes. Didn't make too many mistakes. Looked like a guy that was comfortable playing in this type of situation. He had a great year in the American Hockey League. It really is astounding that he hasn't played a game in the league." Kostka is 27 years old and is only now playing in his first NHL season. He's put up big offensive numbers in the AHL and might have some fantasy value if the Leafs continue to give him plenty of playing time.

Mike Kostka had three assists in the Toronto Marlies' 5-2 victory over the Rockford IceHogs.

Kostka has only been held off the scoresheet in two of his last 14 games. He has six goals and 34 points in 33 AHL games this season.
Jan 5 - 6:29 PM

Mike Kostka could get a look at training camp with the Toronto Maple Leafs pending an end to the lockout.

He has played very well for Marlies in the AHL this season and has been impressive since Jake Gardiner went down with a neck injury. If the lockout ends and Gardiner is still deemed unfit to play then it might increase Kostka's chances of sticking with the big club. "When he goes to the NHL, yeah, he's going to have to make adjustments," said assistant coach Gord Dineen. "But I think he's smart enough to make those adjustments, just maybe do things a little bit quicker sometimes with the puck." Kostka has racked up 29 points in 31 games this year and currently sits tied for second in scoring among AHL defensemen.

Mike Kostka was assigned to the minors on Tuesday as a late cut from the Panthers' roster.

Coach Kevin Dineen admitted that Kostka's demotion was a difficult decision because he coached him for two years in AHL Portland. "I probably recused myself from any conversations about Kos because of our past experiences," said Florida's bench boss. "His play has really spoken for himself. I don't know if I'm going to get fed tonight because he's one of my wife's favorites from Maine."

Mike Kostka is still on Florida's roster with training camps coming to a close.

"He's just found a level of stability. He's a little older, a college guy who's been in the pros for three years," said coach Kevin Dineen referring to the 25-year-old defenseman. "His intelligence has been a strong point. He's got patience with the puck, so he's done a good job in training camp and has earned a longer look." Kostka spent two seasons playing under Dineen in AHL Portland, so the two of them are familiar with each other. He accumulated 16 goals and 55 points in 80 games with Rochester in 2010-11. Kostka may land a roster spot with team to start the season, as he is pushing Keaton Ellerby for playing time.
