Michael Sauer (concussion) was not given a qualifying offer from the New York Rangers.
He has not played since suffering a concussion on Dec. 5, 2011 following a hard hit from Toronto's Dion Phaneuf. His status for next season is questionable, so he probably won't get any takers as an unrestricted free agent until he's back to 100 percent. Tue, Jul 2, 2013 08:25:00 AM

Michael Sauer (concussion) is "not even in the conversation" for the Rangers, coach John Tortorella said.

The defenseman suffered a concussion Dec. 5, 2011, in a collision with the Maple Leafs' Dion Phaneuf. Sauer has not been on the ice since. "I wish I could give you some kind of timetable on when or if he can come back, but I can’t," Sauer’s agent, Ben Hankinson, said. "Unfortunately it’s still day to day, week to week, month to month."

Michael Sauer (concussion) might not be able to play when the lockout ends.

In fact, it's possible that Sauer won't be able to play at all in 2012-13 due to post-concussion syndrome, even if the season is saved. He had a goal and three points in 19 games last season.

The outlook on defenseman Michael Sauer and his recovery from a concussion still isn't good, according to Rangers coach John Tortorella.

"Michael has not responded that well, I'll be quite honest, and I do not think you'll see him at the beginning of the season," said Tortorella on Sunday. "That's a big hole for us. Michael played very well for us, and we certainly missed him during the playoff run. I think it's going to be a little bit of time before Michael resumes his career." Sauer has been sidelined since Dec. 5 following a big hit from Toronto's Dion Phaneuf.

There's no guarantee that Michael Sauer (concussion) will be ready for the start of the 2012-13 campaign.

"It’s a huge question mark," Rangers coach John Tortorella said regarding Sauer's availability. "I just saw Michael for the first time today in months. I don’t have a lot of update, but it’s certainly not where he needs to be even to start working out." Sauer hasn't played since Dec. 5.

Michael Sauer (concussion) has been kept off the ice for two straight days

Trainer Jim Ramsey made the call to keep the defenseman from skating on Friday, but it doesn't appear as though he's suffered a setback in his recovery from a concussion. Sauer skated for three consecutive days prior to being given this time off.

Michael Sauer is making progress in his recovery from a concussion.

He has been free of symptoms for the last seven to ten days and wore a non-contact jersey at practice Tuesday. "It felt great to be out there; I have to take it one day at a time, but I know it'll continually get better," he said. Sauer has been out of action since Dec. 5.

Michael Sauer has been placed on injured reserve with a concussion.

He hasn't played since Dec. 5 after receiving a massive hit from Toronto's Dion Phaneuf. Sauer has three points, 21 penalty minutes and a plus-9 rating in 19 games with the Rangers this season. There is no timetable for his return.

Michael Sauer has been diagnosed with a concussion and is listed as day-to-day.

The Rangers already have Marc Staal out with a concussion, so losing Sauer as well will be a tough pill to swallow. However, it will give other blueliners a chance to step up in his absence and Anton Stralman should draw back into the lineup as a result. Sauer was drilled on a clean hit from Toronto's Dion Phaneuf late in the third period of Monday's loss.

Michael Sauer had an unspecified evaluation on Tuesday, but his status for Thursday's game against Tampa Bay is unclear at this time.

The Rangers didn't practice, so there was no update on his condition following a hard hit from Toronto's Dion Phaneuf during Monday's contest. Sauer may have hit his head on the sideboards as he went down and he missed five games earlier in the year with a strained right shoulder. Anton Stralman will likely fill in on the blueline if Sauer is ruled out. We'll let you know when the situation becomes clearer.

Michael Sauer was nailed on a big hit from Toronto's Dion Phaneuf late in the third period on Monday night.

The shoulder-to-shoulder collision caught a piece of Sauer's jaw on the follow-through and it forced him to miss the rest of the game. We'll let you know what his diagnosis is once we get more information.

Michael Sauer (shoulder) returned to the Rangers' lineup on Thursday.

Sauer was out for five straight games due to the injury. He logged 21:42 minutes, primarily with blueliner Michael Del Zotto, and blocked three shots.

Michael Sauer has been cleared to return from a shoulder injury for Thursday's game against Toronto.

"I'm ready to go, I got cleared," said Sauer. "I'm excited ... Every game, it doesn't matter, who get those butterflies. It'll be good for me to go out and get that first hit." He hasn't played since Oct. 8 because of the injury.

Michael Sauer is likely to return from his shoulder injury on Thursday for New York's long-awaited home opener.

Brendan Bell was assigned to the minors on Tuesday, which could be an indication that Sauer is ready to play. If he takes part in contact drills on Wednesday, without complications, then he will probably play against Toronto on Thursday. We'll keep you posted.
