Agent Allain Roy said there hasn't been any contract discussions between Deryk Engelland and the Pittsburgh Penguins.

He's a physically imposing figure on the blueline and he can line up as a forward as well, so he may be able to find a job elsewhere if he's permitted to test the free agent waters.

Deryk Engelland skated as a forward in Friday's overtime loss to Edmonton.

Deryk Engelland has been handed a five-game suspension by the NHL.

Because Engelland has already served the first contest of that while waiting for his hearing date, he will be eligible to return on Dec. 27. He is being punished for his high hit on Detroit's Justin Abdelkader. Engelland has five points and 38 penalty minutes in 27 games this season.

Deryk Engelland will have an in-person hearing Wednesday for his hit to the head of Red Wings forward Justin Abdelkader.

The Penguins defenseman landed a shoulder to the chin of the Red Wings forward, who left with assistance immediately after taking the hit. Engelland received a match penalty and a 10-minute misconduct for the illegal hit to the head. An in-person hearing means Engelland could be facing a suspension of at least six games.

Deryk Engelland will play on the fourth line on Friday.

Engelland has gotten a fair amount of ice time as a forward lately. With Kris Letang returning from a knee injury on Friday, the Penguins have a bit of extra incentive to stick Engelland on the fourth line. If Letang needs to miss a shift or more for whatever reason, then Engelland can switch over to defense.

Derek Engelland played forward for the second straight game.

The usual defenseman replaced Harry Zolnierczyk in the lineup on the fourth line. Engelland has no points in four games with a minus-three rating and one fight.

Deryk Engelland shifted from defense to the fourth line on Thursday.

"He's done it before," Penguins coach Dan Bylsma said. "We know he has an understanding of what the position implies." This was actually Engelland's second NHL game as a forward, but if Bylsma feels comfortable using him in that role, then he should play more frequently. As it is, he's just participated in three of the Penguins' seven contests.

Deryk Engelland drew into his first game of the season Saturday.

He replaced Robert Bortuzzo in the lineup. Engelland was minus-one in 13:28 minutes of action Saturday. He played in 42 games for the Penguins last season with six assists, 54 penalty minutes and a plus-five rating. He has been displaced by the play of rookie Olli Maatta and when Kris Letang returns to action, Engelland will drop another spot on the depth chart. We cannot recommend him for penalty minutes due to his lack of ice time.

Deryk Egenlland is in a battle for a roster spot on the Penguins' blueline this season.

The rough and rugged rearguard is in competition with a long list of defensemen including Robert Bortuzzo, Rob Scuderi, Brian Dumoulin, Olli Maatta, Derrick Pouliot and Scott Harrington. "They're knocking on the door," said Engelland of the impressive number of talented rookie blueliners in camp. In anticipation of this battle, Engelland broadened his off-season workouts to include pilates, boxing lessons, and workouts with UFC trainers. If Engelland does land a roster spot, he should be a very good source for PIMs.

Deryk Engelland suited up for Pittsburgh in Game 2 against Boston.

He replaced Mark Eaton in the lineup to add a more physical dimension to the Penguins' blueline. Engelland saw nearly 18 minutes of ice time in the Bruins' 6-1 win, while contributing two penalty minutes, two hits, one block and one shot.

It looks like Deryk Engelland will get back into the lineup for Game 1 against Ottawa Tuesday night.

His inclusion makes sense since the Senators played a physical series versus Montreal in Round 1 and he enjoys playing that kind of game. He was paired with Doug Murray in the morning skate after he skated in the team's top-six group in Monday's practice as well. With Engelland likely to play, Simon Despres will head to the press box.

Deryk Engelland is a scratch for the Penguins in Game 6 on Saturday night.

Engelland played in Games 1 and 2, registering three hits, four blocked shots and four penalty minutes. Simon Despres, who has gone pointless with a hit and three blocked shots in two games of this series, will draw into the lineup in his place.

Deryk Engelland may get the nod to play in Game 1 against the New York Islanders Wednesday night.

Brooks Orpik didn't practice Monday due to a lower-body injury and his status is questionable for Pittsburgh's playoff opener. If Orpik can't play then Engelland is the next most physical option available and he did play in six postseason contests with the Penguins last year.
