Deryk Engelland will sit Wednesday due to a lower-body injury.

It's believed that he suffered a groin injury in Tuesday's contest versus Nashville. Engelland logged 19:27 of ice time in that match. He has 13 penalty minutes and seven hits in four games this year.

Deryk Engelland spent a lot of years in the minors before finally striking it rich this season.

Engelland made his NHL debut five years ago at age 27 when a lot of players would have given up and his play last season got him a three-year/$8.75 million contract with the Flames. The tough blueliner will be a leader for the Flames but his offensive fantasy value will not be worthy of a roster spot in your lineup.
Oct 11 - 5:57 AM

Deryk Engelland may face some competition for Calgary's last defense spot.

The position will probably be his after he signed a three-year deal worth just over $2.9 million per season in the summer. "They brought in a lot of good players and there are a lot of young kids coming up," said Engelland. "It's not a time you can take lightly. You have to compete and take the spots, even if you know a spot is open, you still want to push the guys ahead of you and try to move up." Calgary also invited Raphael Diaz and Sheldon Brookbank to training camp on tryouts.
Sep 20 - 5:48 PM

Deryk Engelland has reached a three-year agreement with the Calgary Flames.

According to TSN's Bob McKenzie, the contract is worth $2.9 million per season. Engelland is a big, tough player who can play forward or defense. He recorded 12 points and 58 penalty minutes in 56 games last season.
Jul 1 - 3:20 PM

Agent Allain Roy said there hasn't been any contract discussions between Deryk Engelland and the Pittsburgh Penguins.

He's a physically imposing figure on the blueline and he can line up as a forward as well, so he may be able to find a job elsewhere if he's permitted to test the free agent waters.
Jun 24 - 12:29 PM

Deryk Engelland skated as a forward in Friday's overtime loss to Edmonton.

During his 9:44 of ice time, he registered four hits and a minus-1 rating. Engelland has eight points and 40 penalty minutes in 34 games this season.
Jan 11 - 10:50 AM

Deryk Engelland is eligible to return after serving his five-game suspension.

He was banned for a high hit on Detroit's Justin Abdelkader back on Dec. 14. Engelland will probably be back in Pittsburgh's lineup on Friday night against Carolina.

Deryk Engelland has been handed a five-game suspension by the NHL.

Because Engelland has already served the first contest of that while waiting for his hearing date, he will be eligible to return on Dec. 27. He is being punished for his high hit on Detroit's Justin Abdelkader. Engelland has five points and 38 penalty minutes in 27 games this season.

Deryk Engelland will have an in-person hearing Wednesday for his hit to the head of Red Wings forward Justin Abdelkader.

The Penguins defenseman landed a shoulder to the chin of the Red Wings forward, who left with assistance immediately after taking the hit. Engelland received a match penalty and a 10-minute misconduct for the illegal hit to the head. An in-person hearing means Engelland could be facing a suspension of at least six games.

Deryk Engelland will play on the fourth line on Friday.

Engelland has gotten a fair amount of ice time as a forward lately. With Kris Letang returning from a knee injury on Friday, the Penguins have a bit of extra incentive to stick Engelland on the fourth line. If Letang needs to miss a shift or more for whatever reason, then Engelland can switch over to defense.

Derek Engelland played forward for the second straight game.

The usual defenseman replaced Harry Zolnierczyk in the lineup on the fourth line. Engelland has no points in four games with a minus-three rating and one fight.

Deryk Engelland shifted from defense to the fourth line on Thursday.

"He's done it before," Penguins coach Dan Bylsma said. "We know he has an understanding of what the position implies." This was actually Engelland's second NHL game as a forward, but if Bylsma feels comfortable using him in that role, then he should play more frequently. As it is, he's just participated in three of the Penguins' seven contests.

Deryk Engelland drew into his first game of the season Saturday.

He replaced Robert Bortuzzo in the lineup. Engelland was minus-one in 13:28 minutes of action Saturday. He played in 42 games for the Penguins last season with six assists, 54 penalty minutes and a plus-five rating. He has been displaced by the play of rookie Olli Maatta and when Kris Letang returns to action, Engelland will drop another spot on the depth chart. We cannot recommend him for penalty minutes due to his lack of ice time.
