The Edmonton Oilers will start giving their AHL players a look-see as the season appears to be lost.
The Oilers loaned Jesse Joensuu to Bern of the Swiss League and while his NHL career appears to be over, it also means that the Oilers may have thrown the towel in on this season and will start auditioning some AHL players to see if they have the right stuff to play in the NHL. "There’s a constant competition for ice time and sometimes the competition is not sitting in the room next to you," said Eakins. "Jesse had an excellent training camp and earned his spot, but the by-product might be more of our record and where we’re at. Jesse worked extremely hard here, he’s an excellent teammate. He’s a guy who’s highly regarded in our dressing room, but our needs have changed. With where we’re at in the standings, there are going to be more people getting looks...When you get in these situation(s) where we’re at in the standings, and there are people down on the farm who deserve looks or are going to get looks now, somebody becomes expendable."
