Toronto's third line of Mike Santorelli, David Clarkson and Leo Komarov has been a favorite of coach Randy Carlyle early in the season.

"It's imperative that you get 'grind' going," Carlyle said. "You want to grind as much as you possibly can and get that wear-down type of hockey. Defending is different with the new rules. No hooking, no holding. It has to be part of our arsenal, a weapon for us." Komarov and Clarkson were credited with four hits apiece in Toronto's overtime win over Colorado on Tuesday. Santorelli has one assist and six shots in his first four games with the Leafs.

Mike Santorelli is projected to be paired with David Booth at training camp.

Coach Randy Carlyle is likely to place some new Leafs forwards with linemates who they are familiar with, so the former Canucks could end up as a tandem. Finns Petri Kontiola and Leo Komarov could form another duo. "There are things that are available to us," said Carlyle. "Are we going to be able to create three balanced scoring lines? Are we going to be able to create a fourth line that's going to have more energy and is going to be able to kill penalties on a regular basis? That's our mindset." The Leafs will have plenty of competition at camp for bottom-six forward roles.

Mike Santorelli has inked a one-year deal with the Toronto Maple Leafs worth $1.5 million.

He registered 10 goals and 28 points in 49 games with the Vancouver Canucks last year. Santorelli's season ended prematurely because of a shoulder injury that required surgery in late January. He can play on the wing or at center and will occupy a bottom-six role with the Leafs in 2014-15.

Canucks forward Mike Santorelli will likely miss tonight's game against the Calgary Flames because of an arm injury.

Santorelli left in the third period of a 1-0 loss to the Coyotes Thursday after being hit by Phoenix forward Martin Hanzal. Santorelli was seen leaving the building with his right arm in a sling. Canucks captain Henrik Sedin was believed to be nursing some sore ribs after a Hanzal cross check. Hanzal completed his hat trick late in the third with a high stick to the face of David Booth, for which he received a double-minor. Vancouver coach John Tortorella would not comment on Santorelli’s injury.

Santorelli is having a surprisingly good fantasy season with eight goals and 24 points in 35 games with a plus-13 rating. He is tied for 57th in points and is 16th in plus/minus so he should be on someone's roster in all but the shallowest of leagues.
