Michael Stone's roots with Calgary should make his transition to the Flames easier following Monday's trade.

Though Stone has only played for Arizona at the NHL level, he did spend four seasons with the WHL's Calgary Hitmen. His wife is also a Calgary-native. "It makes things a little bit easier for me and my family," Stone said, regarding the trade. "My wife is from Calgary and has lots of family out there. This way, she has a lot of help. We had twins in September so she’s going to need a lot of it. It’s an ideal situation if that’s the route it was going to go." Stone can become an unrestricted free agent this summer, but given his Calgary connections it wouldn't be surprising to see him re-sign with the Flames if this rental period goes well. He's projected to join T.J. Brodie on the second pairing and get some power play ice time.

The Calgary Flames have acquired Michael Stone from the Arizona Coyotes in exchange for a 2017 third-round pick and a conditional 2018 fifth-round selection.

The Coyotes will retain 50% of Stone's remaining salary/cap hit, which is $4 million annually for the 2016-17 campaign. Stone has a goal and nine points in 45 games this season. He's played a big role with Arizona, logging over 20 minutes per game in each of the last three seasons. He's eligible to become an unrestricted free agent this season.

Michael Stone is still trying to get to 100% following his knee surgery in April.

"I haven’t played to my capabilities," Stone said. "Obviously, you saw the kind of player I was last year and I’m not that player right now. I’m getting there I feel, and I feel like this last couple weeks have been a step in the right direction. Hopefully I can continue that." He has a goal and eight points in 38 games this season compared to his 36-point showing in 2015-16. Coyotes coach Dave Tippett feels Stone has come around in his last 10-12 games and is back to playing like his normal self.
Jan 26 - 11:08 AM

Michael Stone has been struggling to get back up to his 2015-16 level after undergoing surgery in April.

Stone had a career-high 36 points last season, but he has no goals and six assists in 28 contests in 2016-17. He's also spent some time in the press box. "It’s getting the confidence back that you have your legs underneath you," Coyotes coach Dave Tippett said. "I think that’s where he’s been." He's worth keeping an eye on as a potential bounce back candidate for the second half of the season.

In 20 games this season Stone has six helpers with 40 hits and 44 blocks. Nice rates if you're in the right kind of league.

Michael Stone is expected to draw back into the lineup Monday night.

He was scratched against Nashville on Saturday, but an injury to Connor Murphy has opened up a spot. "His game can continue to improve," coach Dave Tippett said of Stone. "Like we talked about, he's come back from a long layoff (from knee surgery). He needs to get up and going. A little more consistency in his game would be what we're looking for there."

Michael Stone will be scratched against the Predators on Saturday.

Stone, who has just 23 career goals in 296 games, has none this season in 17 games with six helpers. He does have 32 hits and 38 blocks this season, which won't leave you in a total lurch.

According to Jim Matheson, the Arizona Coyotes have made it known that pending-UFA Michael Stone can be had in a trade.

The 26-year-old defender has posted three helpers in seven games with 13 blocks and 15 hits. Stone is coming off a career year last year when he posted 36 points in 75 games, and has proven he can handle heavy workloads with three consecutive seasons of averaging over 20 minutes per night.

Michael Stone (upper body) returned to the Arizona lineup Saturday after missing six games.

Stone was reunited with Oliver Ekman-Larsson and you can't do much better than that. He has three helpers in only five games this season and saw a tick short of 21 minutes of ice time against the Bruins. He should be in your lineup in deeper pools.

The Arizona Coyotes will get Michael Stone back for Saturday night's match with Boston.

Stone has posted three points with six blocks and hits through four games thus far. So get the 26-year-old back on your blue line.

Michael Stone (upper body) may be available to play Saturday.

He has missed the six games with an upper-body injury, but coach Dave Tippett views him as an option to face the Boston Bruins.

Michael Stone (upper body) is doubtful for Thursday's game against Winnipeg.

"He’s put in some good practice time here," Coyotes coach Dave Tippett said. "You don’t want to put him in a bad position to reinjure anything. We’ll just see where it goes the next couple days, but it’d certainly be good to get him back." Based on that, it sounds plausible that Stone might return on Saturday. He has three assists in four games this season.
