Mike McKenna has been called up by Florida on an emergency basis.

The Panthers lost Al Montoya to injury on Sunday versus Minnesota, so McKenna will fill in as the team's backup behind Roberto Luongo.

Mike McKenna said he's ready if the Panthers need him at some point this season.

McKenna will likely serve as the team's starting goalie in the AHL. With Roberto Luongo and Al Montoya as the number one and two goaltenders on the roster, McKenna will only see time if one of those two players is injured. "I thought this was the best chance I had to maybe get some NHL time and I’m going to make the most of that chance if it comes,’’ said McKenna. "Everyone hopes to play with just two goalies in a season, but I have to be ready. This is what I always work for. I’ve had a few chances, but I sure would like another solid crack at it.’’

Mike McKenna has signed a two-year, two-way contract with Florida.

"McKenna is an experienced goalie who helped lead Portland to the playoffs last season," said GM Dale Tallon in a statement. He posted a 27-18-6 record in the AHL with a 2.24 goals-against average, a .926 save percentage and seven shutouts last season.

Arizona has assigned Mike McKenna to the minors.

His only action this season at the NHL level came in a 5-2 loss to Colorado on Feb. 16.

With five goals allowed on 34 shots, it's accurate to say that Mike McKenna's season debut did not go well. But it's not as though he was supported.

When Gabriel Landeskog made it 5-1 late in the second period, the Coyotes as a team had as many shots on goal through 37:18 of play than the Avalanche had pucks in the net. That's how little support Mike McKenna received. Though he can't escape blame, having let in a few stinkers as well, like Landeskog's tally. By the time the game mercifully ended, it was 5-2 Colorado and the 31 year old McKenna's career record had fallen to 5-11-2 with 68 goals against in 22 games.

Mike McKenna will play between the pipes on Monday.

McKenna hasn't played in a game yet for Arizona in the 2014-15 campaign. The Coyotes have been leaning heavily on Mike Smith since the Devan Dubnyk trade and are expected to continue to do so for the remainder of the season.

Mike McKenna has been brought back up by Arizona.

He was exchanged for Louis Domingue at the end of January, but he's back up with the big club again to serve as Mike Smith's backup. McKenna hasn't made his Coyotes debut yet.

The Arizona Coyotes sent goalie Mike McKenna back to the AHL on Saturday.

McKenna wasn't really even getting a sniff of playing time as the Coyotes are in Mike Smith-or-die mode, so this is rally just a note for those who were maybe pondering daily fantasy moves on rare evenings.

Mike McKenna has been called up by the Arizona Coyotes.

Goaltender Mike Lee was simultaneously sent to the minors. McKenna has a 2.09 GAA and .934 save percentage in 32 AHL contests. It's possible that he'll serve as the Coyotes' backup goaltender going forward, but given the timing of this move, the more likely scenario is that Lee will be recalled after the All-Star break and McKenna will return to AHL Portland.

The Arizona Coyotes have signed Mike McKenna to a one-year, two-way deal.

Mike McKenna had a 2.54 GAA and .910 save percentage in 36 AHL contests last season. Look for him to start the 2014-15 campaign in the minors.

The Columbus Blue Jackets have sent Mike McKenna to the minors.

McKenna had been promoted briefly to serve as the Blue Jackets' insurance policy if Sergei Bobrovsky (flu) was unavailable on Tuesday. Bobrovsky started in that contest, but he didn't complete the game. All the same, Bobrovsky is likely to play on Friday.

The 30-year-old who has seen a lot of AHL action over the past few years earns his first NHL win since the 2008-2009 season with Tampa Bay.
