Mike Murphy announced Tuesday that he is leaving for the KHL.
The 23-year-old netminder spent majority of the past season with Charlotte of the AHL. He played two games with the parent club, not allowing a goal in 36 minutes of work. Despite not allowing a goal, Murphy lost his only decision on Dec. 7 when Calgary’s Jarome Iginla scored into an empty net for what turned out to be the decisive goal in a victory over Carolina. Mike Murphy has been returned to the AHL by Carolina.

Mike Murphy hasn't gotten his first NHL start yet, but he has 36 minutes of playing time in two games.

Murphy has replaced a struggling Cam Ward twice in the Hurricanes' last three contests. On Tuesday, Murphy became the first goalie in NHL history to lose a game before allowing his first goal, thanks to Jarome Iginla's empty netter. On Friday, Murphy turned aside all seven shots he faced in a 4-2 loss.

Mike Murphy was given the loss in Tuesday's game against Calgary.

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, he is the first netminder in NHL history to record an NHL loss before allowing an NHL goal. Murphy made two saves on two shots in about nine minutes of ice time, but he became the goalie of record when Jarome Iginla's empty net goal became the game winner after the Hurricanes netted a pair of tallies in the final minute of regulation. That's a pretty bizarre stat line for the 23-year-old keeper and one that he probably will never forget.

Mike Murphy is having a successful run in the AHL playoffs and he might be in line to challenge for Carolina's backup goalie job next season.

He has a 1.73 goals-against average and a .945 save percentage in eight games with the Charlotte Checkers. Murphy and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins netminder Brad Thiessen are involved in an excellent duel in their Eastern Conference semifinal battle. The Checkers have a 3-1 series lead thanks to Murphy's 44-save, 1-0 shutout victory on Wednesday. He could give Justin Peters some competition in the fall at training camp, bot another year in the minors wouldn't be out the question either.

Goaltender Mike Murphy and seven others were demoted by the Hurricanes to the AHL Saturday.

Forwards Chris Terry, Mike Angelidis, Nicolas Blanchard and Nick Dodge as well as defensemen Zack Fitzgerald, Jonathan Paiement and Brett Bellemore were sent to Albany. None of these players were regarded to have any chance of breaking camp with the Canes this season.

Mike Murphy will battle for the top goaltending job in Albany next season.

The Hurricanes made a great pick last season in grabbing Murphy in the sixth round as the netminder was the top goaltender in major junior hockey last season. Murphy was 40-9-2-2 for Belleville of the OHL with a 2.08 GAA and a .940 save percentage. "He had a great year," Carolina GM Jim Rutherford said. "He's a great competitor. He covers a lot of net. He finds a way to stop the puck. We expect him to go to Albany and fight for the No. 1 job." Murphy could find himself battling for the backup job in Carolina in 2010-11 as Michael Leighton has only one year left on his contract, backing up starter Cam Ward.

The Carolina Hurricanes have signed goaltender Mike Murphy to a three-year, entry-level deal.

Murphy will make $65,000 a year when he's playing in the minors, and an average of $541,667 per year when playing in the NHL. He also received a $235,000 signing bonus. He had a 2.08 GAA and OHL-best .940 save percentage in 54 games with the Belleville Bulls. He's put up impressive numbers in the minors but has been criticized in the past for his unusual style of play and his small stature.
