The Flyers have demoted Johan Backlund to the minors.

Marc-Andre Bourdon, Erik Gustafsson, Jon Kalinski, Mike Testwuide, David Laliberte and Ben Holmstrom will also begin the 2010-11 campaign in the AHL.

Johan Backlund stopped just 13 of 20 shots in his return from a hip injury on Sunday.

He's been recovering from off-season hip surgery and he missed all but the Flyers' final game on the preseason. Unfortunately, he did nothing to prove to Philadelphia that he could quickly shake off the rust. He allowed three goals in the first period and then another four goals in the span of less than four minutes in the second period. Even with Michael Leighton injured, we wouldn't be surprised if Backlund starts the season in the minors. Stay tuned.

Johan Backlund (hip) won't play in the Philadelphia Flyers' preseason game on Friday.

It's not clear if Backlund will be healthy enough to start the season with the Philadelphia Flyers, but he probably won't make the team even if he is. Goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky has been great in the preseason and may have climbed above Backlund on the depth charts.

Johan Backlund (hip) participated in the Flyers' full practice on Monday.

Backlund has been recovering from off-season hip surgery. "The plan now is to try to get [Backlund] a game here coming up toward the end of the week and see how he does," GM Paul Holmgren said. "He's a little bit behind because he hasn't been able to take part in full practice. But health-wise, he's been cleared to do everything."

Johan Backlund missed Sunday's practice due to a hip injury.

The good news is Backlund was still able to participate in some drills for 30 minutes before the Flyers' practice. Michael Leighton and Brian Boucher are expected to make the team, but Backlund or Sergei Bobrovsky might end up surprising people.

Johan Backlund has inked a two-way, two-year deal with the Philadelphia Flyers.

Backlund will make $800,000 per season at the NHL level and $105,000 per season in the AHL. Backlund will probably start the 2010-11 season in the minors, but he should be the Flyers first call-up if one of their goaltenders goes down with an injury.

Johan Backlund agreed to a two-year contract, according to GM Paul Holmgren.

Details of the contract weren't released. Backlund remains a depth goaltender for the franchise. Michael Leighton and Ray Emery are set to become unrestricted free agents July 1. Brian Boucher still has one year left on his deal and is the likely backup next year. The team is expected to negotiate with Leighton, who had a great half-season, but anything could happen come free agent time.

The Flyers are close to signing Johan Backlund to a two-year contract.

He is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent this summer. If he gets signed then Philadelphia will have him and Brian Boucher under contract for next season as their goaltenders, but they still have to decide what to do with pending UFA netminder Michael Leighton. The Flyers will have plenty of question marks surrounding their goalie situation this off-season.

Johan Backlund might be the Flyers' starting goaltender in the playoffs.

Backlund is currently recovering from a reaggravated groin injury. "I don't think you can rule anything out at this point," GM Paul Holmgren said. "[Yesterday] was his best day in a long time. It was actually the first time that he had gone down in a full butterfly position to stop shots and he didn't have any problems with that." Goaltender Brian Boucher has left plenty to be desired this season, but he was instrumental in Philadelphia's 2-0 victory over Toronto on Tuesday. We'll keep you posted.

Johan Backlund (groin) might be healthy enough to play on Sunday.

Backlund's status with the Flyers got a whole lot cloudier with their recent signing of goaltender Sebastien Caron. That move significantly hurts Backlund's chances of starting in another game this season. However, Caron isn't eligible to participate in the playoffs, so if Philadelphia makes it to the postseason, they'll be forced to rely on Backlund and Brian Boucher during the first round.

Johan Backlund (groin) might be ready to return to the Flyers' lineup on Thursday.

Even if Backlund is healthy enough to play, he might end up serving as the backup goaltender. He made his NHL debut on March 27th, stopping 22 of 24 shots in a 4-1 loss to Pittsburgh.

Johan Backlund re-injured his groin Saturday.

He is considered day-to-day. Brian Boucher will once again be the main man in Philadelphia's crease.

Johan Backlund stopped 22 of 24 shots in a 4-1 loss to the Penguins on Saturday in afternoon action.

The start was Backlund's first in the NHL and it lasted two periods. Brian Boucher played the third frame in relief and did not make a very good impression, allowing two goals on only seven shots.

Johan Backlund will make his NHL debut Saturday against the Penguins.

That's quite a first assignment for the rookie netminder. Stopping Sidney Crosby and his teammates in Pittsburgh is not an easy task. Brian Boucher did not play well against the Wild in a 4-3 loss on Thursday and Flyer coach Peter Laviolette is prepared to give Backlund a chance. Although the 28-year-old Backlund is technically a rookie, he was a starter in the Swedish Elite League for the past four years. Backlund was playing for the Phantoms of the AHL at the time of his re-call this week where he posted a 2.79 goals against average and a .906 save percentage in 41 starts. From a fantasy perspective, we would take a wait and see approach with Backlund
